Corgi Adult Rosie of the River
While lamenting her passing, it was a cause for much celebration among admirers of Catherine Cookson that there were to be nine posthumous novels. While it's clear that these books would have been different had she lived to revise them, there is no question that the latest, Rosie of the River, is a highly accomplished and involving piece of work. All the skill at sympathetic characterisation and beguiling plotting that made her the world's most successful writer of romantic fiction is here aplenty.
Sally Carpenter, worried by her husband Fred's suggestion that they should undertake a boating trip on the Norfolk Broads, is reluctantly persuaded, and the couple set off with their bull terrier Bill in their boat, Dogfish Three. Sally was right to be worried: lying in wait for them is a catalogue of disasters that make the holiday a fraught experience. All is redeemed, though, when they are befriended by the boating fraternity and come into contact with 15-year-old Rosie, whose chequered family history quickly has them involved with her problems. The couple decides to help Rosie in her attempts to improve her lot, and then have to come to terms with Rosie falling in love.
In many ways, this is something of a departure for Cookson, with centre stage being claimed by the resilient boating couple Sally and Fred (although Rosie becomes a central character who is realised quite as fully as the older characters), and if the travails of the couple have a striking ring of authenticity, that is no doubt because Cookson utilised her own experience of boating on the Norfolk Broads with her husband Tom to create the background for her charming tale. This time, the suffering that her heroines are usually forced to endure is underplayed in favour of a narrative that makes its effects gently (but as persuasively as one could wish). The eponymous Rosie is a delightful character (as, amusingly, is Bill, the terrier), and the narrative keeps us inexorably turning the pages:
The river had widened and looked bleak and forbidding; posts, black and dripping green slime, reared up out of the rain-spangled water, which no longer appeared like a river: its width spoke of the sea. She went and stood by her husband, and he, taking his eyes from the windscreen, smiled at her. However, she did not return the smile for there, ahead, forever ahead it seemed, were posts.
--Barry Forshaw

Corgi Adult The Silent Lady
A considerable number of her dedicated readers were saddened by the news of Catherine Cookson's death--not just for the loss of a much-loved woman, but also for the stilling of one of the most distinctive and reliable voices in fiction. Therefore the news that there were nine posthumous novels with her publisher was received with much pleasure. And rather than being evidence of the author winding down, they have shown that Cookson was ever refining her characterisation and the consummate plotting for which she was so noted. The Silent Lady has all of her characteristic touches, most notably a heroine at odds with herself and those around her.
At a distinguished firm of London solicitors, a female vagrant who appears to have been sleeping on the streets, presents herself. With her filthy clothes and inability to speak, it's no surprise that she is initially shown the door, until the firm's senior partner, Alexander Armstrong, learns the name of his visitor. Irene Baindor is a woman with a remarkable past and her reappearance is the signal for the ending of a mystery several decades old. Irene (the eponymous Silent Lady) has encountered benefactors who have helped her to rebuild her life. And now she is able to come to terms with a brutal, disturbed past and attain happiness with both old and new friends.
As with all later Cookson books, it is difficult to predict the course that her constantly surprising narrative will take--clearly, the author had decided to retire some well-worn formats and strike out in entirely new directions. Although the customary romantic elements are well in evidence here, this is essentially a mystery in which the reader is swept through an intriguing narrative that moves from darkness into light. Irene represents something new in Cookson heroines, and her presence renders this one of the author's most thoughtful and affecting narratives. --Barry Forshaw

Corgi Adult Kate Hannigan's Girl
Such is Catherine Cookson's continuing popularity that this sequel to her much-loved Kate Hannigan is appearing a full 50 years after the original novel. Cookson's grip on the reader's imagination has not wavered in all that time, and Kate Hannigan's Girl is every inch as charming as the original novel.
In the early 1920s, Kate is happily married to Dr Rodney Prince who has taken into his home her illegitimate daughter Annie. Needless to say, although all seems to be well, a desperate conflict soon arises. Vicious rumours concerning Kate's past will not go away, and Annie is soon faced with a threat that conjures up images of the desperate poverty of the Fifteen Streets district that they have left behind them. Like all the best sequels, Cookson utilises elements of the original novel and gives them a fresh spin: Annie is presented with similar problems to those that faced her mother: religious prejudice (a recurrent theme in Cookson, and one that she clearly felt strongly about) and a harsh decision involving the choice between two very different ways of life: Brian Stannard, with his prospect of a settled middle-class life and the wayward but brilliant mathematician Terence McBane, who belongs to the world that Annie has left behind.
As always, the author is adroit at turning the screw ever tighter on her troubled heroine, and it's a cold-hearted reader who will not find themselves thoroughly involved in her plight. Cookson's 100th published book is set in the north-east that she chronicled so often and so well--and within the constraints of a romantic novel she is able to make many telling points about the inequalities and prejudices of human society. Her dialogue is as pithy as ever, such as Kate's distinction between herself and her daughter:
It may be the wrong religion for me...we're not all made alike, father: we are individuals. She is happy in her religion, I never was; she loves the pageantry and the feeling of one large family, I never did. From an early age I rebelled against it. I cannot distribute my love or affection. I've found it must be all one thing or person, or nothing. I must go direct to the source, so to speak, for I have found that intermediaries create a sense of the frustration in me, and the church is so full of intermediaries.
--Barry Forshaw

Bantam Press The Simple Soul and Other Stories
Admirers of Catherine Cookson's writing are now greeting every new book that appears with a mixture of pleasure and sadness: pleasure that the standard o f these posthumous books has been so consistently high, and sadness that the supply of unpublished works must soon be exhausted. The Simple Soul is a diverting collection of stories set against the background of locales familiar to Cookson's fans, principally London, the South Coast and the Northeast. One of the author's particular specialities was always the saga that spanned a considerable period of time, and even these short pieces bring that skill into play (the timescale of the stories stretches from the 1920s to the late 1990s). In the piece that bears the name of the collection, Richard is a family man whose happiness has deserted him, and musing on his unhappy marriage, he calls on an office colleague for whom he has never previously had much time. The encounter leads to a crucial reassessment of his relationship with his wife and their entire marriage. It's a mark of Cookson's skill that the narrative here (more than strong enough for an entire novel) is handled with a conciseness and sensitivity that perfectly fits the brief tale. And that's also true of the three stories that make up The Forbidden World, which stretch across several decades, and act as snapshots of changing attitudes to marriage and pregnancy.
All of these tales have the characteristic Cookson touch: a wry, affectionate attitude to her characters that gives them all a truthfulness and solidity. Some readers balk at short story collections; Cookson fans would be doing themselves a disservice if they let such prejudices steer them away from this book. --Barry Forshaw

Little, Brown Catherine Cookson: The Biography
Write about what you know. Catherine Cookson was a phenomenon in her own lifetime. Her illegitimate origins in the Newcastle slums of the early 1900s gave no indication that she would, at the time of her death in 1998, be a bestselling novelist, known to millions as Our Kate. Cookson worked her way out of her poverty-ridden childhood, and exorcised its worst horrors through her increasingly successful writing. Her astonishingly prodigious output--97 novels in all--was matched by her philanthropic generosity--as her wealth grew, she ploughed resources back into the impoverished community from which she came. Her roots were inextricably linked with the north-east of England. Kathleen Jones has drawn on previously unpublished excerpts from Cookson's own autobiography, plus lengthy tape recordings and interviews with close friends to reveal the deeply troubled woman behind the remarkable success story. Cookson's breakdown and series of miscarriages have been well-documented, but Jones sheds new light on the author's disturbed relationship with her mother, and the intense friendship with Nan Smith which threatened her marriage. Above all, Jones returns to the works, so much more than mass-market fiction, which overcame the scoffing of literary prejudice to earn Cookson the title of the greatest historical novelist of all time.
