Headline Book Publishing Ltd Jack: Straight from the Gut
It's hard to think of a CEO that commands as much respect as Jack Welch. In Jack: What I've Learned Leading a Great Company and Great People, Welch, with the help of Business Week journalist John Byrne, recounts his career and the style of management that helped to make GE one of the most successful companies of the last century. Under his leadership, General Electric reinvented itself several times over by integrating new and innovative practices into its many lines of business. Beginning with Welch's childhood in Salem Massachusetts, the book quickly progresses from his first job in GE's plastics division to his ambitious rise up the GE corporate ladder, which culminated in 1981. What comes across most in this autobiography is Welch's passion for business as well as his remarkable directness and intolerance of what he calls superficial congeniality--a dislike that would help earn him the nickname Neutron Jack. In spite of its 496 pages, Jack: Straight from the Gut is a quick read that any student or manager would do well to consider. --Harry C Edwards

Capstone Publishing Ltd Business the Jack Welch Way: 10 Secrets of the Worlds Greatest Turnaround King (Big Shots S.)
Stuart Crainer should be commended on his abilities in conducting secondary research studies. This book is full of references to recent books on management, leadership, and strategy by celebrated business Gurus; but then, how else would Mr Crainer have written this book without direct access to Jack Welch?
Once one has accepted its second-hand nature, the unique business gems--true secrets--that do not apply to other known business leaders are thin on the ground. This reviewer found three, of which two are attributable to Jack Welch and the other to Roger Stone. So here goes: 1. Don't do things in half measures (JW) 2. If you want to be content you should be a dog (RS) 3. Find good ideas, exaggerate and spread them around (JW).
All in all, Mr Crainer has made an achievement in conveying to his reader a concise summary of GE's corporate history under the helmsmanship of Jack Welch. However, insights about the man himself are missing. The natural conclusion one makes is that Jack Welch's secrets are enshrined within the endless examples of business observation made by Gurus and not within the psyche of the man himself. --Ade Adekola
