Charlotte 'Charlie' Cantilini (Jennifer Lopez ) hasn't had much luck in love and has been searching for that perfect partner. When she meets Dr. Kevin Fields (Michael Vartan), it seems this could be the man of her dreams. However, she soon finds that there is one big obstacle to her happiness...his mother! Viola Fields (Jane Fonda) is overbearing, controlling and volatile. Having recently lost her job as a star news anchor, she is feeling very insecure. Afraid that she will lose her son's affections too, Viola decides to break up the happy couple by becoming the world's worst mother-in-law. Helping her with her crazy schemes is Viola's long-time assistant, Ruby (Wanda Sykes). As Viola continues in her offensive, Charlie finally decides to fight back. Has Viola finally met her match?
