CineRail Modern Image - Crew Works - The Inside Story
Crewe has been associated with locomotive construction since 1846. From the days of the London and North Western Railway, LMS, British Rail and now ADtranz, the tradition of high quality workmanship has been maintained. ADtranz allowed exclusive access to their Crewe operation giving a rare insight into the high technology world of modern traction maintenance. In addition, locomotive types built here are shown at work in the 50's and 60's. 1996 saw the 150th Anniversary of the LNWR and to mark the occasion ADtranz opened their doors to the public on the 17th August 1996 and a 15-minute supplement shows the event.

Penguin Books Ltd Servants of the People: The Inside Story of New Labour
If revenge is a dish best eaten cold, there will be some hastily scalded--and scolded--mouths around Westminster. Heavily serialised already in two national newspapers, political commentator Andrew Rawnsley's account of the honeymoon period of Tony Blair's Labour government is the story of four men who wanted something so much they could not believe it when it arrived. It proved, to a degree, a Faustian pact. Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Peter Mandelson and Alastair Campbell formed an inner circle without the Cabinet, but within earshot of their mutual blade-sharpening, while remaining glutinously bound by fierce personal desire. Rawnsley himself displays little of his subjects' psychological flaws. Indeed, he would make a fine spin-doctor. His truffling turns up a barrowload of anonymous quotations, some whispered, some brayed, to support a punchy, racily confident narrative that begs between-the-lines reading to guess who has said what and why. He considers with clarity and wit episodes such as the now notorious Ecclestone affair, Geoffrey Robinson's home loan to Peter Mandelson, European monetary union, the Good Friday negotiations, Kosovo, the Pinochet affair, Scottish devolution and the trumpeted marriage of convenience between Blair and Brown. According to Rawnsley, while the antagonist Brown skulks around, grim of manner and unsung, Blair proves a more slippery customer. Unexpectedly gutsy over Kosovo and Northern Ireland, like Margaret Thatcher he remains at heart a conviction politician, and when his instinct deserts him, the exposed lack of ideological foundation can see him flounder, such as over the Mayor of London election. Rawnsley's final chapter, dealing with Blair's disastrous courting of the Women's Institute, inadvertently sets the stage for the fuel crisis, when the mask finally started to eat into the face. New Labour got itself into a spin, inevitably given its accelerating centrifugal force, but the Government still approaches the prospect of a second term-Blair's cherished dream--with cash in the coffers, and real achievements on the board. Andrew Rawnsley demands similar plaudits, for as vivid and plausible an account of the machinations of contemporary politics as there has been. And the burns will quickly heal. --David Vincent
NB: the latest edition includes a new preface and five new chapters which include information about the 2001 General Election

Ebury Press Poisoned Chalice: The inside story of Keegan's England

I failed to get the best out of the players I chose and that is down to me, he said. Then he said something that perhaps is the biggest self-condemnation of any England manager there has been. I wasn't able to get my team to do what I wanted them to do, he said.
Poor Kevin Keegan. Once the bubble-permed Mighty Mouse of English football, champion of Liverpool's Kop, European footballer of the year, a national hero who was living the Roy of the Rovers dream. And then he tried his hand at management.
In Poisoned Chalice Sun journalist Brian Woolnough joins the roller-coaster ride as the FA waves a tearless goodbye to the gifted, though simply too eccentric god-botherer Glenn Hoddle and heralds the Keegan era--from the qualified optimism of his appointment to the lingering sense of disappointment as his side returned defeated from Euro 2000. It wasn't long after this book was written that a broken Keegan publicly fell on his sword.
Woolnough has reported on the fluctuating fortunes of England's national team for 30 years--the momentary highs, the interminable lows and the gallery of once-hopeful helmsman who have steered England from one set of rocks to another--and he brings that perspective to bear on the questions of why Hoddle, Keegan et al. so consistently fail to meet the expectations of England's supporters, and whether there is something so fundamentally wrong with the way the national game functions that failure is the only possible outcome.
Of course, Woolnough and the newspaper for which he writes are dominant voices in the persecuting chorus that follows every England manager--at times it reads like a hyena's account of the disappointing struggle put up by its latest kill, and raises familiar questions about the vested interest the media has in chivvying their subjects from one page-filling crisis to another.
A fascinating book, which goes below decks of the good ship Keegan and brings back at rat's eye view as it slips inexorably beneath the waves. --Alex Hankin

Ebury Press Life in the Fast Lane: The Inside Story of the Ferrari Years

On occasions I felt some people were reluctant to contradict Michael as they seemed scared of upsetting him and of him leaving the team. I have to say that taking life by the balls is not a great strength of all Europeans. When balls where given out in Ireland and England, they seem to have run out further south in Europe.
International playboy, unreconstructed womaniser, a party animal prowling the champagne circuit of the Formula 1 year, Eddie Irvine has brought much-needed thunder and flash to a sport which has struggled under the yoke of dour, monochrome characters like Nigel Mansell and Michael Schumacher for so long.
>From obscurity to within a whisker of the Drivers Championship in four years at Ferrari, the world's most glamorous and enigmatic team, Irvine's rise to stardom has been meteoric, and when the Northern Irish maverick joins Jaguar on January 1, 2000, the Millennium will be ushering in the most exciting Grand Prix season in living memory.
In his own words, and in interviews with his friends, family and teammates, Irvine and writer Jane Nottage reveal the man behind the myth, treating us to the exclusive inside line on the 1999 season, Ferrari, Schumacher and the glitterdust that trails in the wake of one of the most glamorous sports in the world.
Always outspoken, often outrageous, Irvine is a cavalier in a sport where team politics and sponsor duties have made mumbling Roundheads of so many of his fellow drivers--this is seat of the pants ride through a life lived in the fast lane. --Alex Hankin

Fourth Estate The Proving Ground: The Inside Story of the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Boat Race
In The Proving Ground, journalist and lifelong sailor Bruce Knecht tells the staggering story of the 54th Sydney to Hobart yacht race--an annual event that is always an extreme test of courage and skill in some of the world's most treacherous seas, but which in 1998 would become the most disastrous race in modern yachting history.

Although he was already fifty feet from the boat, Brownie didn't have any trouble spotting Glyn. He looked small, and utterly helpless ... Glyn was already having a hard time keeping his head out of the water, and everyone quickly reached the same unthinkable conclusion--Glyn was going to die and there was nothing to do but watch ... Steve Kulmar was more shaken than anyone. When he first came on deck, he believed Glyn was looking directly back at him.
<p&g t; Of the 115 boats that started under clear skies in Sydney, just 43 would finish. Six sailors lost their lives, and a further 55 were plucked from the storm after the fleet had been decimated by unforecast hurricane winds and 80ft high waves.
Knecht's style is novelistic, though measured, with a strong journalistic sensibility marshalling what must have been at times appallingly poignant eye-witness testimony into a coherent account of the disaster. His intended focus is beyond the headlines, and by concentrating on the experiences of a handful of individual crews, The Proving Ground succeeds in convincingly conveying the agonies of their desperate, sometimes futile struggles to survive. He offers some insight into what drew them to the sea in the first place, and why so many of the survivors have felt compelled to face it again. --Alex Hankin

Time Warner Paperbacks Leeds United on Trial: The Inside Story of an Astonishing Year
As manager David O'Leary admits in his controversial chronicle of the 2000/01 campaign, Leeds United on Trial, whatever his talented young side achieved on the pitch was overshadowed by the ongoing criminal trials involving three of its brightest stars. On January 12, 2000, student Sarfraz Najeib was chased by a drunken mob through the streets of Leeds, cornered and brutally beaten. Leeds players Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate were accused of taking part in the attack, and team-mate Michael Duberry accused of subsequently attempting to pervert the course of justice. For the record, only Woodgate was convicted of a criminal offence (affray).
O'Leary's views on this unsavoury affair take up around a quarter of the book, the rest being dedicated to reviewing a quite extraordinary season for one of the emerging forces in European football. O'Leary has presided over a transformation at Leeds since becoming manager in 1998, and in 2000/01 they were fourth in the Premiership and shock Champions League semi-finalists, having come through groups featuring Euro monster-clubs such as Barcelona, AC Milan and Real Madrid.
The former Arsenal player describes how he had set himself square against what he perceived as the brutal, cynical style of Don Revie's Leeds heroes of the 1960s and early-70s, and sought to emulate the Keegan-era Newcastle side in becoming everyone's favourite other team: a strategy that he details as hinging on success in selling the new Leeds image to sought-after young talents such as Robbie Keane and Rio Ferdinand. O'Leary is an intelligent, authoritative guide to the business of winning football matches--with plenty of surprising and entertaining insights into the strengths and weaknesses of his players, and the odd indiscreet peek behind the scenes.
But there is no escaping the trial, and while O'Leary is unstinting in his condemnation of his players' behaviour, one conclusion that could be drawn from statements made by O'Leary--his description of the way that Woodgate valiantly tried not to let the trial affect his performance on the pitch, for example--is that in the modern age football always comes first.--Alex Hankin
