Fellini - Il Bidone
Three small-time conmen, Augusto, Picasso and Roberto, play elaborate tricks on both the poor and the credulous. Their cruelty and lack of morality, however is challenged when Augusto is reunited with his estranged daughter and Picasso is faced with his loving wife's disapproving patience. Crawford, Basehart and Giulietta Masina turn in excellent performances as Fellini's directorship presents sharply observed characters in this sincere social drama, which is, by turns comic, bitter and tragic. Forming the second part of Fellini's 'trilogy of loneliness' (between La Strada and Nights of Cabiria), Il bidone displays the development of his maturing neorealist style.
