Virgin Records Ltd A Year In The Life Of Blue [2002]
<I>A Year in the Life of</I> charts the incredible rise of British boy band Blue. Hitting the UK Top Five for the first time in May 2001, Antony, Duncan, Simon and Lee followed All Rise with two UK No. 1 singles (Too Close and If You Come Back). From the signing of their record deal to their first visit to Australasia, this access all areas release documents the guys' gruelling schedule. <p>Keen at first to highlight the authenticity of Blue in comparison to other more manufactured boy bands, the feature instead unintentionally exposes how superficial their success is; owing just as much to PR and image management as talent. The visual material is also inconsistent throughout, with a glut of footage from the first few months but a severe lack of more recent material, ending with shots of the group starting work on their second album in early 2002. There is no mention of the band winning the Best Newcomer award at the Brits 2002. <p> <B>On the DVD:</B> the flashy menus on the disc are attractive and easy to use, with the 70-minute documentary divided into chapters. The band's first four videos are available to view separately or as part of the whole feature. Incongruously labelled as Blue on Tour, one section of the bonus material includes behind-the-scenes footage of the band's promotional visit to Singapore. There's also the Director's Cut of If You Come Back, which is only slightly different from the official video. Opening with Duncan slapping his girlfriend it soon becomes obvious why this version of the video was never used. Footage of the band recording the track (labelled as the Early Studio Version) provides an interesting insight into how songs rapidly change shape in post-production. --<I>John Galilee</I>

<I>Live at Le Grand Rex</I> features a wildly enjoyable and often unexpected concert performance by ex-Roxy Music front man and prolific solo artist Bryan Ferry. The setting is Paris in the spring of 2000, starring Ferry and about a dozen musicians mixing the avant-garde, Tin Pan Alley and a delirious pop mélange for the kind of passionate European audience that gave Roxy Music, during the early 1970s, its first commercial and critical boost outside the UK. Backed by brass, piano, percussion, the occasional guitar and a string section comprised of beautiful Muses (you must see it to understand...), Ferry glides through a handful of Rodgers & Hart, Cole Porter and Kern & Fields standards, then hits the ground running on a slate of his own classic compositions from the last three decades: Chance Meeting, The Only Face and Avalon among others. Not the strongest of singers, Ferry is often drowned out by the sheer stamina of his backup band. But it's impossible, still, not to be transported by the stylish earnestness and whiff of decadence in his soaring vocals. Virgin Records Ltd UB40 - The Collection [2002]
Over the course of more than two decades, Birmingham's UB40 have become global ambassadors for reggae, a journey captured perfectly on <I>The Collection</I>. This programme is split into two main sections: a 26-track video collection and a documentary detailing their 20th anniversary concert in September 2001. Forgoing chronology in favour of a more random approach, the video selection is slightly disjointed on a visual level, leaping from decade to decade within the space of a couple of tracks.<p> While they have never made a truly great video (most feature the band lip-synching in various places around the world) UB40 have certainly been prolific over the years. One In Ten and Food for Thought, their earliest work, represented the sound of young, multicultural Britain just as well as the more lauded Specials. And while there have perhaps been a few too many covers in recent times, it is hard to deny the effectiveness of Red, Red Wine and Kingston Town. <p> Much of the success of the documentary depends on how interesting you find infinite shots of pony-tailed men wheeling flight cases, but it does provide an insight into the background to such an event (which took place two days after the World Trade Centre attacks), if not the band themselves. There is also some excellent live footage, featuring guests such as Chrissie Hynde, Freddie McGregor and Sly & Robbie--proof that, despite the critical sneers, UB40 have taken their place amongst the reggae greats. <p> <B>On the DVD:</B> <I>UB40: The Collection</I> has excellent digital sound, while the picture is unsurprisingly far better on the later tracks. The documentary and concert footage, too, are excellent, the latter benefiting from a multi-camera approach. Seemingly designed primarily for DVD rather than simply a VHS upgrade, this impressive package is polished and viewer friendly.
