Microsoft Visual J# .NET Standard 2003
<I>Visual J#.NET Standard 2003</I> is Microsoft's implementation of the Java language, combined with the .NET Framework class library and the Visual Studio integrated development environment. It is an unusual product, since it does not compile to Java byte code, but rather to Microsoft .NET executables. This means Visual J# programs only run on Windows PCs that have the .NET Framework installed. Another factor is that Visual J# aims for compatibility with Java 1.1.4, which is rather old. Java code that uses the official Swing graphical library will not run in Visual J#, although there is a downloadable add-on that allows this, designed for use in education. <p> Clearly <I>Visual J#.NET Standard 2003</I> is not Java, but there are still good reasons for using it. The .NET Framework has many powerful features, including ASP.NET for Web applications and Windows Forms for desktop programs. There's excellent support for XML and Web services, strong visual design tools and easy access to the Windows API should you need it. <I>Visual J#.NET Standard 2003</I> is ideal for existing Java developers who need to target the .NET Framework, although it has to be said that the transition from Java to Visual C# is also relatively easy. Another factor is education. Many programming textbooks use Java for example code, and Visual J# allows you to run these examples within Visual Studio. The bottom line is that Visual J# is a great way to code for .NET using the Java language. Those looking for a true Java programming tool should look elsewhere. <p> This Standard edition is excellent value and includes all you need to create Windows and Web applications. It's not intended for professional use, and there are some extra features in the <I>Professional Edition</I>. These include source-code management, visual data tools, server explorer and more. <I>Visual Studio.NET Pro 2003</I> also includes the other .NET languages, <I>Visual Basic</I>, <I>Visual C#</I> and <I>Visual C++</I>.
