Universal Pictures Video Somewhere In Time [1980]
It's silly, it's superficial, it's so desperately earnest about its tale of time-spanning love that you almost wish for a cheap flatulence gag just to break the solemn mood. But there is something so unabashedly gushy and entertaining about Somewhere in Time that you can't begrudge its enduring popularity. The film has become a staple of romantic-movie lovers since its release in 1980, and endless showings on cable TV have turned it into a dubious classic of sorts--a three-hanky weepy that anyone can enjoy as a guilty pleasure or a beloved favourite, with no apologies necessary. In his first film after the star-making success of Superman, Christopher Reeve stars as a contemporary playwright who visits a posh hotel and sees the portrait of an actress (Jane Seymour) who had performed there in 1912. He becomes obsessed with this beautiful woman and learns all he can about her, and then discovers a method of hypnotically transporting himself backward in time to meet her. Is it ... you? she says upon seeing the lovestruck playwright, and it's clearly a mutual attraction. But even the slightest reminder of the playwright's modern time can jar him from his seemingly real existence in the past, so his wonderful love affair is constantly just a step from being stolen away. Based on Richard Matheson's novel Bid Time Return, this flaky film may strain one's tolerance for plot holes and corny romance, but it's hard to deny its lasting appeal--and let's face it, guys, it'll make wives and girlfriends swoon if they are in a tearjerker mood. --Jeff Shannon

Somewhere In Time (DVD)
Somewhere in Time is the story of a young writer who sacrifices his life in the present to find true happiness in the past, where true love awaits him. Young Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve) is approached by an old woman who gives him an antique gold watch and who pleads with him to return in time with her. Years later, Richard Collier is overwhelmed by a photograph of a beautiful young woman (Jane Seymour). Another picture of this woman in her later years reveals to him that she is the same woman who had given him the gold watch. Collier then becomes obsessed with returning to 1912 and the beautiful young woman who awaits him there...

Abacus Somewhere Over the Rainbow
For his second travel book, reporter Gavin Bell--no stranger to South Africa-- returned to the country to check the pulse of Mandela's rainbow nation. He is blunt about what he found: Half of the population had mobile telephones, the other half had no running water, and all of them were afraid of being mugged.
South Africa, struggling to deal with the legacies not only of apartheid, but of centuries of colonialism, is in trouble, its people not so much divided as simply foreign to each other, history having cruelly widened the gulfs between peoples scattered across this vast, often beautiful, but also often boring, hot and inimical land.
The real threat to South Africa now is globalisation: the destruction of communities by capital. It's easy to sneer at white farmers, as they regret the breaking of the paternalistic bonds that once existed between themselves and their black employees. But Bell makes no such mistakes. He has, after all, just heard much the same lament--from Mandela's country cousin. 'He says he was happy when they were children', the translator explains. 'They drank sour milk from the cow, and they ate the cow, without buying anything. You can't get sour milk today. Then they wore blankets, now it is Western clothes. Also there were a lot of ceremonies in those days, and there are not so many today.'
This is not a political study: Bell offers the armchair traveller many sensuous diversions and he is often achingly funny. But he can never quite put out of his mind that this was JRR Tolkein's birthplace; and there is something of Mordor about the landscapes he describes. --Simon Ings

Orion Children's Books (an Imprint of The Orion Publishing Group Ltd ) The Road to Somewhere
The Road to Somewhere tells the story of Cow (a cow, believe it or not) who is perfectly happy with her life on the farm until the day she realises that she is destined to take a trip in the truck to never-come-back. Ratty (a rat) decides to take matters into his own hands and plots her escape. They are joined on the road to Somewhere by Woolly (a particularly tough and ferocious lamb who is as reluctant to be turned into a casserole as Cow is) and together the odd trio make their way towards a kind of freedom.
Written from the point of view of Ratty whose own words recount the tale of this great escape, author Helen Armstrong cleverly takes us straight to the very soul of the three courageous friends, and brings us a heart-warming, humorous, thought-provoking animal's-eye view of life--both in the context of the farmyard and on the open road--that is truly unforgettable.
<I&g t;The Road to Somewhere is a refreshing treat, and perfect for anyone who enjoys quirky, edgy and unusual fiction. This little gem combines superlative storytelling with an unforgettable magic brought to life with a warmth and style that makes it just about ideal for either reading aloud or for confident young readers to enjoy on their own. (Age 7 and over) --Susan Harrison

Headline Book Publishing Ltd Somewhere, Someday
Josephine Cox has made her mark as one of the great romance writers of her time, with her careful combination of gritty realism, empathetic characterisation and intricate plots putting her way up there with the likes of the great CatherineCookson.
In Somewhere, Somehow she sets out to please her legions of loyal fans with yet another heart-wrenching, heart-warming tale filled with all the passion and intrigue of her previous work, and perhaps has produced here her best novel to date. Kelly, a woman who has lived in the shadow of a terrible secret for most of her life, faces a future without her one true love--Barney--as he embarks on a personal journey that may never bring him back. As he leaves, Kelly decides to embark on a journey of her own, taking a huge step into the past in order to lay the ghosts of her tragic childhood.
As she takes her first tentative steps back towards her previous life, bravely returning to the home where her father was murdered when she was just a child, Kelly encounters the kindness of strangers, each with their own tragic secrets, but each on a voyage of discovery which brings them all into contact with darkness, evil and, ultimately, love and understanding.
Somewhere, Somehow is a joy to read, and Cox writes with a wilful freshness that will make this novel irresistible to hopeless romantics and lovers of a good, old-fashioned yarn, and will also prove, if proof is needed, that this author's reputation as an accomplished storyteller who delivers the goods should certainly not be doubted. --Susan Harrison
