HarperCollins A Simple Path: Basic Buddhist Teachings
The Dalai Lama, the leader of Tibetan Buddhism, is widely respected as one of the world's great spiritual teachers. Although he is from one particular school of Buddhism, the Tibetan, Buddhists from most traditions find his work both acceptable and inspiring, because he tends to stress the broad features rather than the narrow.
A Simple Path, based on talks he gave in London in 1996, exemplifies this approach by discussing the essence of Buddhism, the Four Noble Truths: the nature of suffering; the origin of suffering and the law of karma; cessation of suffering through liberation; and the path to achieving this.
The Dalai Lama also covers other central Buddhist teachings, such as the interdependence of reality, the principle of non-violence, the Three Jewels--the Buddha himself, the Dharma or teaching, and the Sangha, or community of practitioners--and much more including, crucially, compassion. The essence of Buddhism may indeed be a simple path, but the philosophy is endlessly complex; this book is not an introductory text for the complete beginner!
The text of the book has appeared previously, both as The Four Noble Truths and as part of The Heart of the Buddha's Path, so it's worth checking your shelves before buying it. The added value of this edition comes from the 80+ stunning colour photographs by Ian Cumming, which are intended to complement, rather than merely illustrate the text. These images of Tibetan monks, monasteries and mountains are truly inspiring; they make the world of Tibetan Buddhism, and the home from which the Dalai Lama has been exiled, come to life in a remarkable way for Western readers. --David V. Barrett

HarperCollins Transforming the Mind: Teachings on Generating Compassion
The mind is central to all human experience. Whether one is in harmony with the world or not depends upon one's relative emotional and spiritual health. For this reason, the core teachings of Buddhism have always emphasised various forms of mind-training. In Transforming the Mind, based on an edited series of his lectures, the Dalai Lama provides a succinct overview of the basic techniques of spiritual development of Tibetan Buddhism. He introduces several aspects of mind training, combining the insights of traditional scholarship with his personal warmth and humanity.
The book begins with a lucid account of the basic teachings of Buddhism--the nature of the human predicament and how it may be overcome. Then two key aspects of mind training involving the development of altruism and insight are described. This is essential, since Buddhism teaches that true mental transformation requires a sense of responsibility for others together with the attainment of insight into the dynamic working of the human psyche and the world. Included in the book is the short traditional text on mental transformation which the Dalai Lama used to structure his illuminating presentation of Buddhism practice. As an added bonus, the book concludes with a message for the millennium, giving the Dalai Lama's views on the role of Buddhist-inspired ethics in this newly dawning era.
Though not aimed at complete beginners, this book will appeal to readers who are seriously committed to bringing about change in the world through developing their own spiritual capabilities, whether they are Buddhists or not. --Stephen Hodge

Rider & Co Stages of Meditation: Training the Mind for Wisdom
Stages of Meditation is a commentary by the Dalai Lama on a rare text by the 9th-century Indian Buddhist scholar Kamalashila, written in Tibet to correct some Chinese misinterpretations of Buddhism which were influential at the time. Kamalashila's short work is not widely known today, but according to the Dalai Lama it is a most important text and worthy of study by those new to Buddhism; as he says, on the basis of this knowledge you will be able to understand other treatises without great difficulty. This text can be like a key that opens the door to all other major Buddhist scriptures.
Throughout the book the Dalai Lama emphasises the importance of logical analysis of scriptures, even if they are in the Buddha's own words; some teachings, he stresses, should not be taken literally, but need interpretation. And this is what he does in this clear and readable commentary, originally given in 1989, and only now transcribed, translated and published. Its 10 short chapters are on such familiar Buddhist themes as Training the Mind, Compassion, Identifying the Nature of Suffering, and the Practice of Calm Abiding.
Through meditation, says the Dalai Lama, we can train our minds in such a way that negative qualities are abandoned and positive qualities are generated and enhanced. Those who practice meditation, whether Buddhist or not, will find this a thoughtful and practical guide, written with the Dalai Lama's characteristic warmth and gentleness. --David V Barrett

Hodder Mobius The Transformed Mind: Reflections on Truth, Love and Happiness
The Dalai Lama is one of the best-known religious leaders in the world, and one of the most respected. The Transformed Mind is a collection of talks he gave at a Tibetan Buddhist centre in Delhi during the 1990s. The history of Tibetan Buddhism is covered in a useful Introduction by Lama Thubten Zopa Rinpoche; in the transcribed talks the Dalai Lama explores many of its teachings. The essence of Buddhist conduct and philosophy is non-violence and the theory of interdependence respectively. Non-violence has two directives: If you can, help and serve other sentient beings; if you cannot, then at least do not harm others.
Spiritual development, he says, comes from having a good and compassionate heart [which] automatically brings inner strength and allows for less fear and less doubt. This isn't restricted to Buddhism; he has a great respect for believers in other religious traditions, and longs for greater harmony between religions. A refreshing honesty runs throughout this book, and also a delightful humour. When asked, What is the best method to stop the population growth? his response is More monks and more nuns, of course! I call it non-violent birth control. One of the simplest and most useful pieces of advice in the book is that every morning we should create positive feelings by thinking, I must have a meaningful day.
Unlike his earlier book Ancient Wisdom, Modern World, this one is clearly primarily for followers of Buddhism. However, the warmth of the Dalai Lama's approach means that, though his style is sometimes discursive, his teachings are quite accessible by non-Buddhists. --David V Barrett

Hodder Mobius The Art of Happiness at Work
For their second collaboration, The Art of Happiness at Work, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and coauthor Howard C Cutler, MD chose a subject that affects millions of people around the world. In this very readable, useful book, the authors attempt to discover the following: Where does work fit in to our overall quest for happiness? and To what degree does work satisfaction affect our overall life satisfaction and happiness?
The Art of Happiness at Work is a modern-day Socratic dialogue in which Cutler asks the Dalai Lama about the difficulties and rewards we might encounter in the workplace. The authors explore issues such as work and identity, making money, the Buddhist concept of right livelihood, and transforming dissatisfaction at work. The discussion appears simple, if not obvious, at first, but upon closer scrutiny, the Dalai Lama's profound wisdom and sensitivity emerges. For the Dalai Lama, basic human values such as kindness, tolerance, compassion, honesty and forgiveness are the source of human happiness. Throughout the book, he illustrates with clear examples how bringing those qualities to bear on work-related challenges can help us tolerate or overcome even the thorniest situations. Recognising that not all problems can be solved, the Dalai Lama provides very sound advice. The authors urge balance and self-awareness and wisely state, No matter how satisfying our work is, it is a mistake to rely on work as our only source of satisfaction. --Silvana Tropea, Amazon.com

Bloomsbury Destructive Emotions: A Dialogue with the Dalai Lama
Destructive Emotions and How We Can Overcome Them: A Scientific Dialogue with the Dalai Lama forcefully puts to rest the misconception that the realms of science and spirituality are at odds. In this extraordinary book, Daniel Goleman presents dialogues between the Dalai Lama and a small group of eminent psychologists, neuroscientists and philosophers that probe the challenging questions: Can the worlds of science and philosophy work together to recognise destructive emotions such as hatred, craving and delusion? If so, can they transform those feelings for the ultimate improvement of humanity? As the Dalai Lama explains, With the ever-growing impact of science on our lives, religion and spirituality have a greater role to play in reminding us of our humanity.
The book's subject marks the eighth round in a series of ongoing meetings of the Mind Life Institute. The varied perspectives of science, philosophy and Eastern and Western thought beautifully illustrate the symbiosis among the views that are readily accessible, despite their complexity. Among the book's many strengths is its organisation, which allows readers to enjoy the entire five-day seminar or choose sections that are most relevant to their interests--such as Cultivating Emotional Balance, The Neuroscience of Emotion, Encouraging Compassion, or The Scientific Study of Consciousness. But the real joy is in gaining an insider's view of these extraordinary minds at work, especially that of the Dalai Lama, whose curiosity, Socratic questioning and humour ultimately serve as the lynchpin for the soaring intellectual discussion in the book. --Silvana Tropea, Amazon.com

Hodder & Stoughton Ltd The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sit down with the Dalai Lama and really press him about life's persistent questions? Why are so many people unhappy? How can I abjure loneliness? How can we reduce conflict? Is romantic love true love? Why do we suffer? How should we deal with unfairness and anger? How do you handle the death of a loved one? These are the conundrums that psychiatrist Howard Cutler poses to the Dalai Lama during an extended period of interviews in The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living. At first, the Dalai Lama's answers seem simplistic, like a surface reading of Robert Fulghum: ask yourself if you really need something; our enemies can be our teachers; compassion brings peace of mind. Cutler pushes: but some people do seem happy with lots of possessions; but suffering is life is so pessimistic; but going to extremes provides the zest in life; but what if I don't believe in karma? As the Dalai Lama's responses become more involved, a coherent philosophy takes shape. Cutler then develops the Dalai Lama's answers in the context of scientific studies and cases from his own practice, substantiating and elaborating on what he finds to be a revolutionary psychology. Like any art, the art of happiness requires study and practice--and the talent for it, the Dalai Lama assures us, is in our nature. --Brian Bruya

Abacus Ancient Wisdom: Modern World
Is it possible to have a workable ethical system without the underpinning of religion? This is a question the Dalai Lama addresses in this very readable book. The two aims we all have in common, whatever our religion, are the pursuit of happiness and the avoidance of suffering. Throughout the book the Dalai Lama emphasises that we are not moral islands; we have a responsibility for others. The more we seek to increase the happiness and decrease the suffering of others, the more, ultimately, we will also benefit ourselves. This applies in all areas of life. Thus when we commit ourselves to truth--and thereby to honesty--we help reduce the level of misunderstanding, doubt and fear throughout society. In a small but significant way, we create the conditions for a happy world.
As might be expected, the Dalai Lama draws illustrations from his own life as the spiritual leader and as a refugee from Tibet, and from the stories of other Tibetan Buddhist monks. But he is at pains to point out that this is not a Buddhist book and that he has no desire to convert anyone else to his faith. His answer to the dichotomy of the unique demands of individual religions in a world of religious pluralism is that for each of us, there is one religion which suits our upbringing or temperament best--or even none at all. The teachings of this book are universal. It's a shame that for this book, by one of the world's foremost spiritual leaders, the publishers clearly didn't bother to proof-read the text, which is quite badly marred by grammatical and punctuation errors. Let's hope they tidy up for the paperback. --David V. Barrett

Abacus Freedom in Exile: Autobiography of His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet
The Dalai Lama's autobiography should leave no one in doubt of his humility and genuine compassion. Written without the slightest hint of pretence, the exiled leader of Tibet recounts his life, from the time he was whisked away from his home in 1939 at the age of four, to his escape from Tibet in 1959, to the winning of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. The backdrop of the story is the 1950 Chinese invasion of Tibet. We learn in calm detail of imprisonment, torture, rape, famine, ecological disaster and genocide that in under four decades of Chinese rule have left a million-and-a-quarter Tibetans dead and the Tibetan natural and religious landscapes decimated. Yet the Dalai Lama's story is strangely one of hope. This man who prays for four hours a day harbours no ill will toward the Chinese and sees the potential for good everywhere he casts his gaze. Someday, he hopes, all of Tibet will be a zone of peace and the world's largest nature preserve. Such optimism is not naive, but a result of his daily studies in Buddhist philosophy and his doctrine of Universal Responsibility. Inspiring in every way, Freedom in Exile is both a historical document and a fable of deepest trust in humanity. --Brian Bruya
