Harvard Business School Press Peak Performance: Aligning the Hearts and Minds of Your Employees
There was a time, not too long ago, when employees were encouraged to check their emotions at the corporate door. The workplace was considered a strictly professional environment, where personal emotions had no place. Management theorists finally woke up to the realisation that this practice didn't, in the long run, actually benefit the company. In Peak Performance, Jon Katzenbach expands on this realisation. He asserts that today's companies will get the best work from their employees and beat the competition only when they actively seek out, cultivate and sustain the energy generated by their employees' emotional commitment to work.
Though many companies pay lip service to the notion of employee fulfilment, most do not actually focus critical attention on this vital component of corporate success. Those that do, Katzenbach contends, consistently attain higher levels of workforce performance than their competitors. While these companies share some characteristics in their employee management ideals, they do not follow identical methods of achieving and sustaining the emotional commitment of their employees. In the course of conducting extensive research into the high-performing workforces of more than 20 companies, Katzenbach has identified five distinct paths that, he believes, achieve a balance between enterprise performance and employee fulfilment: Mission, Values and Pride; Process and Metrics; Entrepreneurial Spirit; Individual Achievement; and Recognition and Celebration.
To define the leadership philosophy and illustrate the defining characteristics of each path, Katzenbach uses case studies and extensive interviews with the employees of such enterprises as McKinsey & Co., Marriott International, Avon, The Home Depot, Southwest Airlines, the US Marine Corps and the Silicon Valley underwriter Hambrecht & Quist. He explores the different ways of aligning the workforce energy that is generated and demonstrates the necessity of enforcing disciplined behaviour. The result is a book of evidence for company leaders interested in getting the best and the most from their workforce; it is not an altruistic plug in support of the happy worker but rather a pragmatic exposition of the best conditions for achieving peak performance. --S Ketchum, Amazon.com

Hearts And Minds
An unflinchingly honest work, Peter Davis's landmark documentary 'Hearts and Minds' confronts with stark frankness the United States' involvement in Vietnam and the development of its foreign policy in the 1970s. Using a carefully constructed range of meticulously researched and powerful material including original interviews, newsreel and documentary footage of the conflict and its aftermath both on the battlefield and on home soil, there emerges a devastating and affecting self-portrait, one that sheds light on not only the soldiers and the war itself, but also the catastrophic effects that conflict has on the citizens it so often rages negligently around. An incendiary, enlightening, and ultimately sobering experience, 'Hearts and Minds' was the controversial winner of the 1974 Academy Award (R) for Best Documentary.

Millivres-Prowler Group Ltd Hearts and Minds
Jay Taverner is the pen name of lesbian partnership Jacky Bratton and Jane Traies. Their historical novel, Hearts and Minds, is set in rural England in the 1730s and is a wonderful evocation of life in those transitional times. It's the sequel to their previous novel, Rebellion, and revisits the heroines of that book, 20 years on. Hope and Bell now live together peacefully in a Shropshire village, but when Bell rediscovers her long-lost brother in Ludlow, she agrees to attend his wedding. Separated for the winter, both women are bereft. However, Hope's attention is soon taken up by a beautiful young black woman, Lucy, whom she finds giving birth in her goat shed, and by charges of witchcraft laid against her friend and neighbour, the reclusive shepherdess Bron. Meanwhile, near Bristol, Bell is introduced to the modern iron foundry her brother works for, and to Quaker values of equality. The juxtaposition of a rapidly modernising world with ancient superstitions about witchcraft vividly brings to life the complexities of that time. The gulf between rich and poor is depicted very skilfully, building up to the Shrewsbury Assizes where the aristocratic judge hands out summary justice to the poor, while Hope, Bell and Lucy try to save Bron from hanging. The different plot elements intertwine nicely, and the relationships between the women are warm and deep. This is an excellent piece of historical fiction. --Elizabeth Sourbut
