Abacus Adenauer: The Father of the New Germany
Alongside Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle, Konrad Adenauer was one of the big three leaders who helped rebuild Europe from the ashes of the Second World War. Charles Williams, the Labour politician, has already written an acclaimed biography of de Gaulle; now he has turned his attention to Adenauer, surely the greatest political survivor of 20th-century history. A second-rate Catholic lawyer, Adenauer owed his rapid advancement to the office of Mayor of Cologne in the 1920s to the influence of his first wife's family and to his own crafty opportunism. Under him millions were spent redeveloping the city, and his own rather shady investment portfolio expanded too. Driven from power by the Nazis, Adenauer spent the years of the Third Reich dodging the Gestapo, but remaining aloof from conspiracies bent on destroying Hitler. One of the few clean, if not honest, senior German politicians left after 1945, he not surprisingly became Chancellor of the new Federal Republic, finally bowing out in 1963 a few years short of his 90th birthday. All sides of Adenaeur--family patriarch, horse-trading politician, devout Catholic, rose-gardener, amateur inventor and shuttle-diplomat--are covered in this likeable biography of an unlikeable man.--Miles Taylor

Pocket Books Sins of the Father (Buffy the Vampire Slayer S.)
There are almost too many sub-plots in this book to fit into one novel. Giles has a new girlfriend, a supply teacher who seems to be making him even more vague than usual. Buffy's mother has a date, and while Buffy is out slaying vampires who should turn up but her old flame Pike. He helped her when she first became a Slayer at her previous school in LA, and now he needs her help. He's being pursued by Grayhewn, a stone demon who turns people to stone with a touch. Meanwhile, the mesmerised Giles is captured by a vampire who brings back some very personal memories.
It's all very complicated, but despite the breathless action Buffy still has time to agonise over the two men in her life. She knows she has no real future with Angel the vampire, but Pike hates the whole slaying gig and is likely to move on as soon as Grayhewn is dealt with. She envies Willow and Oz and wonders if she'll ever have a normal relationship.
The sub-plot involving Giles's past is interesting, but might have been stronger if not competing for space with the Angel-Buffy-Pike triangle. However, this is still a strong entry in the series. --Liz Sourbut

Titan Books Starman: Sins of the Father
The first volume of writer James Robinson's award-winning take on the classic superhero Starman is, as is so often the case with comics, an origin tale. What sets Sins of the Father apart from the vast majority of its contemporaries is its unique balance between respectful homage and all-out reinvention. Guided by a love of the source material from the classic heyday of comic book superheroes (Robinson is, after all, the man who wrote the excellent post-WWII superhero series The Golden Age), Starman: Sins of the Father exhibits a warm nostalgia that never alienates newcomers to the character. That's because Jack Knight--the son of the original Starman and reluctant heir to his father's legacy--is about as normal as a comic book superhero can be.
A collectables dealer in the fictional Opal City, Jack Knight is young, hip and sensible, motivated at first only by a sense of obligation to his father, Ted. When one of his father's old enemies, the Mist, returns to Opal City with his son and daughter, Jack is forced to take up his father's signature cosmic rod (a device that is powered by the stars and which grants its bearer superhuman abilities), yet he stops short of wearing his father's costume, opting instead for practical street clothes. As the story unfolds, Robinson seamlessly weaves in a host of interesting supporting characters, from the ambiguously moral immortal aesthete the Shade, to the O'Dares--a family of cops whose father assisted the original Starman. The art team of Tony Harris (pencils), Wade Von Grawbadger (inks) and Gregory Wright (colours) remain consistent with Robinson's vision, providing lurid yet tidy artwork that suggests the comic books that flowered in the 1950s and 60s. They add a distinctly retro feel to this entertaining story of a relatively normal guy forced into a capes-and-tights double life. As an example of how modern superhero comics can be approached, Starman is stellar--it respects its source material while never allowing itself to get overwhelmed by it. --Robert Burrow
