In And Out
Greenleaf seems the perfect all-American town with life centring on the events of the high school. When a former pupil who is now a superstar mentions in his acceptance speech for an Oscar that it was all due to his former high school teacher, Howard, who is gay, the whole of Greenleaf is stunned. So is Howard who, only days away from his wedding, never knew he was gay. Howard is desperate to prove his manliness and the result is hilarious.

Paramount Home Entertainment (UK) In And Out [1998]
Writer Paul Rudnick knows a good idea when he hears one. When Tom Hanks talked about his openly gay high school drama teacher after winning the Oscar for Philadelphia, Hanks had already warned the teacher about the prime-time speech. For Rudnick's comedy, golden-boy star Cameron Drake (Matt Dillon) announces at the Oscars (in a great lampoon of the ceremony) that his high school teacher was his inspiration, and by the way, he's gay. It's a shock to Howard Brackett's (Kevin Kline) small world in the corn belt. That includes his students, parents, coworkers and most importantly, his soon to be bride (Joan Cusack). Rudnick, the most successful and outspoken gay screenwriter-playwright (Jeffrey, The Addams Family) working today has hit cinematic gold. Besides Brackett's running around in crisis control, Rudnick allows a great deal of time to what others think. A typical line: Mr Brackett's not gay! He just likes poetry and Shakespeare and uses his napkin!
In & Out is a screwball comedy first, a banter of how society deals with homosexuality second. Kline is at the top of his comedic talents here; a weaker actor would permit Joan Cusack to steal the entire movie as the bemused bride. Cusack, an Oscar nominee for the role, nails some of the funniest moments from any film that year. Seemingly forgotten as a cinematic presence, a clean-shaven Tom Selleck and his 24-carat gold personality is something to reckon with again. As a Hollywood reporter on the case, Selleck, without moustache, comes off more as George Clooney's older brother than as Magnum PI. The movie is helmed by Frank Oz, the voice of Miss Piggy, who has quietly put together a very impressive list of comedies: Little Shop of Horrors, Housesitter and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. --Doug Thomas

MOMENTUM PICTURES HOME ENT Boxing In And Out Of The Ring [2001]
Boxing In and Out of the Ring reveals that talent, determination and courage make a champion boxer--plus the ability to get the right bribes to the right people at the right time. The film delves into a world of power, corruption and lies that would make Machiavelli blush. It focuses in particular on the astonishing interwoven tales of the 2001 FBI investigation into sanctioning body the IBF that uncovered a cash-for-title-shots scandal, and the multi-million dollar business showdown that grew out of the first Rahman/Lewis world title fight.
At the heart of both stories is Rahman's South African-born promoter Cedric Kushner, and it is Kushner's performance that make this such compulsive viewing. He is a superb subject for comic-tragic drama: at once a charming, dryly amusing soul and at the same time an icy-cold operator, closing in on the biggest payday of his or anyone else's career. The camera goes behind the scenes at his rather shambolic little office, to see him excitedly building a $120m deal for Rahman/Lewis II, and is on hand when a certain Mr King steals Rahman and the fight from under Kushner's nose. Weighing in at an hour and a half, this is a substantial film, with strong journalistic credentials--the expert gallery features leading boxing historians and commentators like Thomas Hauser--and makes for very entertaining viewing. Chapters on the history of boxing business, including mob involvement in champs like Sonny Liston, and the rise of Don King, touch on some well-worn fight-game tales, and are liberally peppered with snippets of vintage ring footage, but overall there's not much boxing to be seen here--though as this film suggests the real fight is outside the ropes.
On the DVD: sadly the disc only has scene selections with no extras to be seen. --Alex Hankin

Weidenfeld & Nicolson The Last Diaries: ): In and Out of the Wilderness v. 3
The Last Diaries: In and Out of the Wilderness is the final self-revealing chronicle of Alan Clark's highly eventful life and times. The French are eternally amused by the insistence of English newspapers that our politicians' lives must be squeaky clean (after all, they reason, what's a mistress or two?). And certainly John Major's famously ill-advised Back to Basics campaign exploded in his face as minister after minister came crashing down in flames as a succession of sex scandals hit the headlines. But one politician always rode above such hyperventilating moral indignation--Alan Clark, whatever his faults (and he would be the first to admit they were legion), was never a hypocrite. When charged with a new indiscretion (such as his famous liaison with virtually the entire female side of a family) he would cheerfully admit it, and even those not sharing his High Tory sympathies would not hold it against him.
Such is the sheer vigour and perception on display here (not to mention the disarming candour--none of that famous economy with the truth in these unbuttoned pieces), that it's a considerable cause for regret that this is the last we will have from the late politician. In the great tradition of such diarists as Pepys, Clark delivers a fascinating picture of an era and his place in it. Just a few words of Clark on (for instance) Tony Benn displays Clark's from-the-hip observations: His mind is so quick and versatile--but the loony prejudice just beneath the surface... the motivation that keeps him active. All those anodyne politicians' memoirs, which strove to be as unrevealing as possible, look even paler next to a document as forceful as this. Whether or not your name is in the index, this is absolutely fascinating reading from a flawed politician who nevertheless makes most of his colleagues--in and out of the Tory party--look uninspiring figures indeed. --Barry Forshaw
