Cream - At The Royal Albert Hall
In May 2005 Cream returned to London's Royal Albert Hall, the same stage where they had completed what was thought to be their final performance in 1968. It was one of the most eagerly anticipated, hard-to-get tickets in rock history. With the exception of a brief reunion set at their 1993 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cream had not played together in nearly four decades. Filmed in Hi Def, this two-DVD set documents Cream's momentous 2005 London shows. Performances from each of the four nights are featured?classic songs like "Badge," "I'm So Glad," "Crossroads," "Sunshine Of Your Love," "White Room," and many more. Bonus features include alternate performances and in-depth interviews with Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, and Eric Clapton.

Sony BMG One Night Only! Rod Stewart Live at Royal Albert Hall
Rod Stewart's various incarnations--Rod the Mod, Rod the Rocker, Rod the Crooner, and so on--are on display on Live at Royal Albert Hall. In what amounts to a 90-minute singalong with his adoring fans, the raw-voiced singer (now huskier than ever) reprises selections from throughout his long and fruitful career, from his early '70s solo albums, including the best of the lot, 1971's Every Picture Tells a Story, through his surprisingly skillful (and successful) new millennium emergence as an interpreter of the Great American Songbook. Despite his having released three CDs of standards by the time of this good-looking, great-sounding concert, only five of the 17 tunes come from them, including a version of As Time Goes By with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders (lush orchestration notwithstanding, there's no disguising the fact that both singers are more at home singing rock or pop than jazz, big band, or cabaret material). Much more emphasis is put on early Stewart material like You Wear It Well, Reason to Believe, and Maggie May songs that were and are beautifully limned by acoustic guitars, violin, and mandolin. Good buddy, former bandmate (in the Faces and the Jeff Beck Group), and current Rolling Stone Ron Wood plays guitar on a couple of numbers (including a raucous Stay with Me), and while Stewart does insist on giving Hot Legs a spin, at the age of 59 he at least has the good sense to keep Do Ya Think I'm Sexy under wraps. A brief tour documentary is the principal DVD bonus feature. --Sam Graham

Universal Pictures Video Michael Ball - Live At The Royal Albert Hall [2000]
Michael Ball Live at the Royal Albert Hall is a tour-de-force from a performer who manages to combine West-End stardom with great success as Britain's favourite MOR performer. By the end of the 1980s he was already a youthful veteran of some of the decade's biggest musicals, including Les Misérables and The Phantom of the Opera. But his performance in Lloyd Webber's Aspects of Love, which spawned the hit single Love Changes Everything, turned him into a major star--a status he has maintained with best-selling albums, sell-out concert tours and television series.
As this 1999 concert reveals, he is at his best singing show songs which give him a character to get his teeth into: Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, for example. And he is a first-rate pop singer whose gallant 1992 bid for Eurovision glory is recalled with the up tempo One Step out of Time. He favours dramatic ballads and sometimes takes them way over the top: there's more than a touch of Dusty Springfield in his histrionic gestures. But it's all delivered with an engaging charm that clearly delights the predominantly female audience. Also included is a Backstage with Michael Ball documentary. --Piers Ford

Universal Pictures Video Andrew Lloyd Webber - The Royal Albert Hall Celebration [1998]
In 1998, a concert celebrated Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday at the Royal Albert Hall. It featured more than two hours of hits from a body of work spanning almost three decades. In this record of a memorable night, star after star steps onto a massive, Eurovision-style set to revisit golden moments in their long association with Britain's most successful composer of musicals. Elaine Paige in big frocks and even bigger voice delivers Don't Cry for Me Argentina and Memory with her usual power; Michael Ball and Donny Osmond stretch the last vestiges of boyish charm to the very limits but still sound great; and Boyzone get the youth vote. Then there are Kiri te Kanawa, Bonnie Tyler, Tina Arena and of course, another encore for Julian Lloyd Webber and those Variations on the cello. But the stars are Sir Andrew's ex-wife Sarah Brightman in an outstanding selection from The Phantom of the Opera (probably his best work), Antonio Banderos who really can sing, and Glenn Close, a stupendous, moving Norma Desmond in songs from Sunset Boulevard. All in all, a deserved celebration for someone who has given so many people a great deal of pleasure, and a treat for musicals fans of all ages. --Piers Ford

Decca Bond - Live At The Royal Albert Hall [2001]
Filmed at their Royal Albert Hall debut gig in September 2000--actually a media junket launching Bond to music industry execs--Bond Live is a slick showcase for four classically trained ex-session musicians' fusion of string quartet and rock music. Whatever the hype, four beautiful women wearing scanty tops and dancing with violins while backed by a five-piece rock combo and small, rarely seen string section, has nothing to do with making classical music cool and everything to do with sex. No heterosexual male is going to have any difficulty remaining glued to the screen, especially during Duel in which first and second violins Haylie Ecker and Eos trade licks guitar hero style. Further setting classical claims aside, most of the tracks are new instrumentals written by Magnus Fiennes or Tonci Huljic for the album Born, though The 1812 does manage to reduce Tchaikovsky's overture to a five-minute dance number. With rock-show lighting, synthesisers, dance beats, band members chatting to the audience and a finale involving the James Bond Theme followed by a Rio-style fiesta for the closing Victory--Carnival Mix this is camp, melodramatic, sexy fun for lads everywhere. Purr-fect for a double bill with Josie and the Pussycats.
On the DVD: The hour-long gig is presented with a very clear anamorphically enhanced 1.77:1 image, which despite the often low lighting is packed with detail and largely free of grain and artefacts. The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound is exceptionally full with very powerful bass. Special features include three music videos and a section going behind the scenes of the shoot for the Victory video, though two of these can only be accessed by working through a 10-part multimedi a quiz. The 13 minutes of interviews are standard promotional trivia, though the gallery of 10 studio-posed full-screen photographs will raise pulse rates. DVD-ROM content includes a Web link, poster and screensaver. --Gary S Dalkin

Warner Music Vision Paul Weller - Live At The Royal Albert Hall [2000]
Paul Weller Live at the Royal Albert Hall is a snapshot of his compelling live act, which along with his ability to produce outstanding studio albums, has given him a reputation as the doyen of short-tempered dad-rock. His ability to cut through the gritty sound and grainy visuals (this video looks for all the world like a transfer from an over-exposed 8mm film) is what makes this release worthy of a place on fans' shelves. We get a slab of good stuff, including Friday Street, a stonking The Changing Man, Woodcutter's Son and no fewer than 15 other tracks. As once 'twas with The Who--and neo-mods will find that this performance reaffirms Weller's debt to that era--Weller's restrained belligerence carries the show, to the extent that his frequent and incongruously musoid guitar-switchings and tuning adjustments are easily forgiven. --Roger Thomas
