Penguin Audiobooks Moby Dick: Or, the Whale (Penguin Classics S.)
Arguably Herman Melville's greatest work, and hailed as a classic American novel, Moby Dick tells the tale of one man's fatal obsession and his willingness to sacrifice his life and that of his crew to achieve his goal. The story follows the fortunes of Captain Ahab and the culturally and spiritually diverse crew of the Pequod, a 19th century whaling ship. The Pequod is on its last voyage out of New Bedford, Mass, in pursuit of Moby Dick, the great white whale which has been Ahab's obsessional quarry and bitter adversary for many years. Narrated by sole survivor Ishmael, the tale forms a complex fictional fusion, combining a wealth of literary symbolism, hidden meaning and philosophical debate with adventure narrative and a detailed historical account of the 19th century whaling trade. --Emily Lowson

Mute Films Moby - Play [2001]
Producing a DVD for Play, could be seen as a shameless attempt to resurrect an album which has reached saturation point as far as sales go or British tolerance will allow after the relentless use of tracks from it in films, adverts, TV shows, trailers and even football coverage. Thankfully, Moby's quality control means he refuses to rip off his fans, so the material gathered within this disk is surprisingly good. First up there's all the music videos from Play, which range from the sublime (Jonas Akerland's treatment of Porcelain) via the cartoon (Natural Blues and Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad by Susi Wilkinson, Hotessa, Laurence & Filipe Alcada, complete with cute little animated Mobys) to the ridiculous (Fredrik Bond's inspired vision for Body Rock). Even funnier are the outtakes for Body Rock, which show footage of all the dancers who didn't make the grade in stupidity stakes.
Along with this is an hour's worth of Moby remixes all segued together, with trippy electronic visuals for the late-night crowd. Even in the middle of the afternoon you can't fail to stare in slack-jawed wonder as a stunning remix of Porcelain kicks in, accompanied by smooth flowing images of urban streets. To stop you from drifting off altogether there are some more up-tempo sections to the mix, including a euphoric reworking of Natural Blues and a 1970's disco funk version of Body Rock to get your toes tapping. For those of you who thought that Moby--the born again Christian, vegan, anti-smoking, animal rights activist--took himself too serious for his own good, go straight to the Tour Videos section of the DVD: filmed all over the world, it provides a platform for Moby to be himself and he turns out to be hilariously funny as he takes you on a backstage tour of Homelands complete with crazy Scottish accent, then pops up in both Germany and France, proving himself a master of their inflexions too. Added to all these features are tracks culled from the Later with Moby BBC special and a separate mix CD of some of Moby's finest moments. All in all a great supplement to a modern day classic. --Helen Marquis

HarperCollins In the Heart of the Sea: The Epic True Story That Inspired Moby Dick
The appeal of Dava Sobel's Longitude was that it illuminated a little-known piece of history through a series of captivating incidents and engaging personalities. Nathaniel Philbrick's In The Heart of the Sea certainly covers the same area, by examining the 19th-century Pacific whaling industry through the arc of the sinking of the whaleship Essex by a boisterous sperm whale. The story which inspired Herman Melville's classic, Moby Dick, has a lot going for it--derring-do, cannibalism, rescue--and Philbrick proves an amiable and well-informed narrator, providing both context and detail. We learn about the importance and mechanics of blubber production--a vital source of oil--and we get the nuts and bolts of harpooning and life onboard whalers. Neither are we spared the nitty gritty of the open boats and sucking human bones dry.
By sticking to the tried and tested Longitude formula, Philbrick has missed a slight trick or two. The epicentre of the whaling industry was Nantucket, a small island off Cape Cod; most of the whales were in the Pacific, a huge journey around the southernmost tip of America. We never learn the reason for this distance and why no one ever tried to create an alternative whaling capital somewhere nearer. Similarly, Philbrick tells us that the story of the Essex was well known to Americans for decades but he never explores how such legends fade from our consciousness. Philbrick would no doubt reply that such questions were beyond his remit and you can't exactly accuse him of skimping on his research; 50 pages of footnotes is impressive by any standards and to give him his credit he wears his learning light. Unlike many academics, he doesn't get bogged down in turgid detail and the narrative rattles along at a nice pace. And when the story line is as good as this, you can't really ask for more.--John Crace

Abacus In Search of Moby Dick: Quest for the White Whale
Near the beginning of Tim Severin's account of his search for a great white whale, he tells the story of a marine biologist who joined a 1980 expedition of his to spot whales. Riding in a bosun's chair high up on the mast of an Arab sailing vessel, the biologist scanned the ocean with binoculars. He spotted whales--

b ut not nearly as many as did two members of the crew far below him on the deck. Again and again one or other would call up to the masthead and draw the lookout's attention to a whale he had not yet noticed ... When the time came for him to leave the ship ... he confessed with a wry smile that the one thing he had really learned was [to] be more sceptical of the observations of marine biologists.</blockquote&g t;
Severin's search takes him around the Pacific and particularly to the Marquesas, where the technique of hunting whales by hand armed only with home-made bill- hooks has not yet been entirely forgotten. Conversations with old whalers bring him closer to true whale lore than any biological treatise. Not that Severin is interested in scoring cheap points. Rather, In Search of Moby Dick is an eloquent demonstration of how much valuable knowledge is locked up in the practices and stories of indigenous people--working people whose very lives and livelihoods, after all, depend upon it.
Melville's Moby Dick was fashioned from the stories and reports of whalers of his day. Severin begins his own hunt in the belief that there is no smoke without fire. He is not disappointed. --Simon Ings

Wordsworth Editions Ltd Moby Dick (Wordsworth Classics)
