A book so fat that it is almost a cube, <I>Mastering SQL Server 2000</I> purports to be the only SQL Server book you need, with its 1,200 pages covering both the background and the practicalities for all levels of user, especially those with healthy biceps--it weighs more than 2 kilos.<p>Following the introductory chapters, there are five further parts dealing with Transact-SQL (SQL Server's querying language), Enterprise Manager, administration, application development and advanced topics. A reasonable number of screen shots enliven the text but some of the diagrams aren't worth the page real estate they occupy.<p>One of the advanced topics covered is Analysis Services and the chapter begins with an introduction to OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing). Unfortunately, the second sentence in the explanation of new terminology reads A cube is a collection of data that's been aggregated along multiple dimensions to make querying happen quickly. As an explanation to a beginner this is less than perfectly helpful, especially as the terms aggregate and dimension have yet to be defined. Sadly, this rather cavalier attitude to the way in which the information is presented is characteristic of the book.<p>On the bright side the book does cover a whole raft of topics and there will be something of value in there for everyone. The authors have been at pains to cover the really new topics in SQL Server 2000 such as the much-improved English Query and data mining.<p>Though intimidating for the beginner and with no added value in the form of a CD-ROM, <I>Mastering SQL Server 2000</I> contains a lot of information that forms a useful reference to those with existing database server experience. --<I>Mark Whitehorn</I>

This small, inch-thick volume fits nicely into a briefcase and opens flat for easy reference. It makes little attempt to explain how SQL Server works, instead assuming that the reader knows what he or she needs. For example, a quick scan of the index for Logins, Assigning Roles for Multiple yields a reference to a page that explains exactly what to do, step by step.<p>Procedures are a big part of the appeal of this book; value tables and Transact-SQL syntax documentation contribute the rest. A typical value table lists all standard database roles, along with commentary on what sort of user is appropriate for each role. Transact-SQL documentation includes generic all available options statements of syntax, followed by usage examples. Deeper explanations of what each option does would make the syntax documentation stronger, but what's here is certainly enough to jog readers' memories and point them to heavier reference material if they need it. This book favours optimisation of SQL Server that can be done via the administrative interface, rather than in application code. <p>Most of database tuning has to do with sacrificing one aspect of performance (say, disk storage capacity) for the improvement of another (such as the execution speed of a particular kind of query). The authors of this book--a team of consultants from a Texas company that specialises in database tuning, and one from Microsoft--take care to explain the trade-offs involved in various tuning decisions. Choose one option, they say, and performance metric A will improve at the expense of metric B. Having explained the design considerations for various tuning strategies, they walk their readers through how to do the tuning they're talking about.
