Sybex Inc.,U.S. Mastering SQL Server 2000
A book so fat that it is almost a cube, Mastering SQL Server 2000 purports to be the only SQL Server book you need, with its 1,200 pages covering both the background and the practicalities for all levels of user, especially those with healthy biceps--it weighs more than 2 kilos.
Following the introductory chapters, there are five further parts dealing with Transact-SQL (SQL Server's querying language), Enterprise Manager, administration, application development and advanced topics. A reasonable number of screen shots enliven the text but some of the diagrams aren't worth the page real estate they occupy.
One of the advanced topics covered is Analysis Services and the chapter begins with an introduction to OLAP (On-Line Analytical Processing). Unfortunately, the second sentence in the explanation of new terminology reads A cube is a collection of data that's been aggregated along multiple dimensions to make querying happen quickly. As an explanation to a beginner this is less than perfectly helpful, especially as the terms aggregate and dimension have yet to be defined. Sadly, this rather cavalier attitude to the way in which the information is presented is characteristic of the book.
On the bright side the book does cover a whole raft of topics and there will be something of value in there for everyone. The authors have been at pains to cover the really new topics in SQL Server 2000 such as the much-improved English Query and data mining.
Though intimidating for the beginner and with no added value in the form of a CD-ROM, Mastering SQL Server 2000 contains a lot of information that forms a useful reference to those with existing database server experience. --Mark Whitehorn

Que SQL Server 2000 Programming by Example (By Example S.)
Ideal for the database programmer or system DBA, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Programming by Example is an excellent example-based tutorial on mastering today's SQL features. Packed with plenty of tips and tricks, this title will let almost anyone do more with SQL Server.
While there are plenty of screen shots showing graphical SQL Server tools, the focus of this book is clearly on learning real command-line Transact-SQL (T-SQL). The authors provide a patient and very thorough tour of T-SQL with full coverage of both basic and advanced features. You'll learn how to define new tables, manage users in groups, as well as perform all kinds of queries. Stand-out material includes an excellent guide to SQL data types and how to choose the right one for your needs. When it comes to queries, the book does a great job of exploring all your options for joining relational data, as well as grouping data for more advanced reporting. True to its title, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Programming by Example is filled with dozens of examples of SQL commands (and the results) so that you can try out this material for yourself and really learn the language thoroughly.
Later on, the authors turn toward server-side programming with a digestible guide to creating stored procedures and triggers. The book closes with an in-depth guide to the issues regarding cursors (for working with table data), transactions and locking. Sections on bulk copy tools and the Microsoft Data Transformation Services (DTS) show how to move data around the enterprise. A final section of distributed queries and linked servers will help you work with different sources of data wherever it resides in your organisation.
Despite some stilted writing, the comprehensive examples in this book make it a success. It will let anyone start using basic T-SQL for the first time, as well as teach more advanced readers to master the finer points of Microsoft databases. --Richard Dragan

Microsoft Press,U.S. SQL Server 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant
If specialisation is for insects, those of us with only two legs are bound to need reminders when we sit down to perform a specialised task. For times when the specialised task at hand involves the latest version of Microsoft's high-end database management system (DBMS), Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant provides how-to answers on the double-quick. This small, inch-thick volume fits nicely into a briefcase and opens flat for easy reference. It makes little attempt to explain how SQL Server works, instead assuming that the reader knows what he or she needs. For example, a quick scan of the index for Logins, Assigning Roles for Multiple yields a reference to a page that explains exactly what to do, step by step.
Procedures are a big part of the appeal of this book; value tables and Transact-SQL syntax documentation contribute the rest. A typical value table lists all standard database roles, along with commentary on what sort of user is appropriate for each role. Transact-SQL documentation includes generic all available options statements of syntax, followed by usage examples. Deeper explanations of what each option does would make the syntax documentation stronger, but what's here is certainly enough to jog readers' memories and point them to heavier reference material if they need it. Keep this book handy if your job requires you to hop from DBMS to DBMS. --David Wall
<B&g t;Topics covered:
&l t;li>Installing and configuring Microsoft SQL Server 2000
Creating databases
Controlling access to databases
Manipulating database contents with Transact-SQL
Backup, recovery, and performance tuning
Data Transformation Services (DTS)

Microsoft Press,U.S. SQL Server 2000 Performance Tuning Technical Reference
Tuning databases can be fun, if it's built into the pre-deployment time allocated to building a system. Tuning ceases to be fun when it's undertaken on a production system, overseen by an unhappy customer with crushing time constraints. Unfortunately, the latter scenario tends to be the more common. Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Performance Tuning Technical Reference provides database administrators and (to a lesser degree) developers with the information they need to extract maximum performance from Microsoft SQL Server 2000. This book favours optimisation of SQL Server that can be done via the administrative interface, rather than in application code.
Most of database tuning has to do with sacrificing one aspect of performance (say, disk storage capacity) for the improvement of another (such as the execution speed of a particular kind of query). The authors of this book--a team of consultants from a Texas company that specialises in database tuning, and one from Microsoft--take care to explain the trade-offs involved in various tuning decisions. Choose one option, they say, and performance metric A will improve at the expense of metric B. Having explained the design considerations for various tuning strategies, they walk their readers through how to do the tuning they're talking about. Instructions aren't for the clueless, but they're fully adequate for SQL Server users who know their way around the interface generally. --David Wall
<B&g t;Topics covered: how to make databases served by Microsoft SQL Server 2000 run as fast and as efficiently as possible by tweaking the way it runs. Emphasis is placed on read/write operations (including SQL Server's way of interacting with RAID arrays), performance monitors and settings for processor, disk and RAM usage. There's also a lot of information on capacity planning and system-sizing.

Microsoft Press,U.S. Data Mining with SQL Server 2000 Technical Reference
According to Data Mining with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Technical Reference, your organisational database is only as good as the strategic data you can extract from it. Do customers who buy breakfast cereal typically buy bananas as well? Is there a correlation between rainfall in a particular region and the prevalence of a particular illness there? Data Mining with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Technical Reference shows how to use Microsoft's analysis tools for large databases. Author Claude Seidman offers advice on the data-modelling engineering process as a whole, including designing strategies likely to yield meaningful results, designing data warehouses, growing decision trees, spotting clusters and anomalies in data and automating mining processes with code.
Despite its designation as a reference, this book is largely a tutorial--you'll refer to it for advice on how to make Analysis Services do something in particular. Seidman uses a classic and effective tutorial technique, sticking with an example throughout the book and adding to previous examples as he explores additional aspects of Microsoft data mining. His illustration involves identifying edible mushrooms, based on a database of facts about known mushrooms, and he's combined how-to prose with screen shots and accumulated wisdom to great effect. If your organisation has gone with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 for data storage, read this book for advice on knowledge extraction. --David Wall
Topics covered: Microsoft Analysis Services, including the proper use of Data Transformation Services (DTS), PivotTable Services, Decision-Support Objects (DSO), and the Microsoft implementation of Online Analytical Processing (OLAP ).

Microsoft Press,U.S. Inside SQL Server 2000
Inside Microsoft SQL Server 2000 has the details you need to design Microsoft database servers that will achieve the best possible performance. For one thing, author Kalen Delaney (who used Ron Soukoup's fantastic first edition as a starting point) explains how SQL Server 2000 works at a level that will interest all database administrators. She packs in the sort of minutiae that can make a real difference in the performance of especially large or complex data-storage structures, explaining what goes on inside the database management system (DBMS) when it's presented with various commands, and using that information to back up her abundant advice on the right way to design, build, and operate databases under SQL Server 2000.
Delaney makes extensive use of DBCC PAGE dumps to show what's going on in the databases that demonstrate concepts (incidentally, that utility is documented, as well as the others in the DBCC toolbox). In a typical section, DBCC PAGE is used to show how index pages work. There's careful attention to database structure at the byte level too, with conceptual diagrams that explain how pointers work and how strings of bytes combine to represent stored data. It's the sort of detail you need if you'll be writing software for SQL Server 2000, or need to extract maximum performance from the DBMS itself.
Topics covered: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 internals, especially data structures and the behaviour of queries.
