Apogee Books Mars: The NASA Mission Reports
Baseball fans have the <I>Sporting News Register</I> for getting their stats fix, and farmer-types can turn to the time-honoured <I>Almanac</I>--so it's only fair that space-exploration junkies should have Robert Godwin's definitive <I>NASA Mission Reports </I>, providing page after page of official data and diagrams not to mention CD-ROMs packed with movies, pictures, and searchable NASA documents. <p> While most of Godwin's NASA books focus on a particular mission (e.g., <I>Apollo 13</I> and <I>Gemini 6</I>), the Mars book chronologically surveys every single mission that's been mounted to the red planet, from the 1964 launch of Mariner 4 to the more current Pathfinder and Mars Global Surveyor encounters. And it's this breadth that makes the book a stand-out even in this excellent series. Not only can you marvel at the 16K flight computer on 1975's Centaur and the much more impressive hardware on the MGS, but you can even see the quality of NASA's press materials evolve. (When's the last time you saw a diagram with a typewritten legend?) <p> With NASA press kits for all the probes and a choice assortment of the more interesting mission reports, Godwin has assembled an authoritative, blow-by-blow resource for serious space buffs. A dream come true for dedicated space buffs, the <I>NASA Mission Reports</I> series pulls together an almost overwhelming array of official NASA press kits, operation reports, images, CD-ROM movies, and even dinner menus from some of the space agency's most momentous missions, from <I>Gemini 6</I> to the many Mars launches.<p> Series editor Robert Godwin explains in his introduction why the failed Apollo 13 mission (later of Tom Hanks-Ron Howard fame) is particularly deserving of such detail-intensive attention: Putting aside the high drama of the events, the following documents reveal a side of NASA that is often overlooked, the talents of the management and administrators. Those talents are nowhere more evident than in the minutes from the House Science and Astronautics Committee hearing, numerous internal NASA memos, and the previously classified technical debriefing of the astronauts. Even the pre-mission materials prove interesting, explaining with extensive diagrams the many experiments that never reached the lunar surface.<p> As with the other excellent instalments in the Mission Reports series, the included CD-ROM backs up the already solid content with searchable documents and choice images and movies, including a long interview with Jim Lovell. Another entry in Robert Godwin's detail-packed, armchair astronaut NASA Reports series, the <I>Apollo 7 </I>compilation includes all the tech-heavy goodies that earlier instalments featured: the official press kit, pre- and post-mission reports, the technical debriefing, dozens of diagrams and colour photos, and even a CD-ROM packed with astronaut interviews, thundering launch footage, and over 500 70mm pictures taken by the flight crew.<p> Godwin's books are so addictive because they're the real deal--essentially unedited, unaltered artifacts from some of NASA's most hair-raising missions. And while Apollo 7 might not have matched Apollo 11 or 13 for sheer drama, the crew of Wally Schirra, Walt Cunningham, and Donn Eisele had a lot on its hands. It was what would be the longest first flight of any craft in aviation history, the first successful manned launch of Wernher von Braun's Saturn IB rocket, and the first successful restart of the service module's hypergolic-propelled motor after a cold soak in space.<p> Because there's no-one to hold your hand through the details, the Godwin books can be daunting to casual readers. But that same rawness makes this report (like its predecessors) often very funny, fascinating, and revealing, whether it's complaints about head colds and congestion in the post-mission report, or just Wally Schirra waxing space-cowboy in the debriefing (...I've had a harder landings on a carrier landing. If you ever watch a guy land in a Demon, for example, his head goes bla-lah-lah lah-lah-lah as he rolls out on the flight deck. It's that bad.) <I>--Paul Hughes</I>
