You'd think a black comedy about murder, tackiness, and sexual perversion would quickly become dated, but <I>Eating Raoul</I> (1982) feels surprisingly fresh and delightful. When Mary Bland (Mary Woronov) gets assaulted by one of the repulsive swingers from the neighbouring apartment, her husband Paul (Paul Bartel) rescues her with a swift blow from a frying pan--only to discover a substantial wad of cash in the swinger's wallet. A lure-and-kill scheme follows, which nicely fills their nest egg until a slippery thief named Raoul (Robert Beltran of <I>Star Trek: Voyager</I>, making his film debut) stumbles onto the truth and insists on getting a share. When Raoul starts demanding a share of Mary as well, Paul has to take drastic steps. The key to <I>Eating Raoul</I> isn't the sensational content, but the blithe, matter-of-fact attitude Bartel and Woronov take to it; their sly underplaying makes the movie sparkle with wicked wit. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

<I>Day of the Dead</I>, chapter three of George Romero's mighty zombie trilogy, has big footsteps to follow. <I>Night of the Living Dead</I> was a classic that revitalised a certain corner of the cinema, and <I>Dawn of the Dead</I> was nothing short of epic. <I>Day of the Dead</I>, however, has always been regarded as a comedown compared to those twin peaks--and perhaps it is. But on its own terms, this is an awfully effective horror movie, made with Romero's customary social satire and cinematic vigour--when a retrained zombie responds to the Ode to Joy, the film is in genuinely haunting territory. The story is set inside a sunken military complex, where Army and medical staff, supposedly working on a solution to the zombie problem, are going crazy (strongly foreshadowing the final act of <I>28 Days Later</I>). Tom Savini's make-up effects could make even hardcore gore fans tear off their own heads in amazement. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Winner of the Academy Award for best foreign-language film in 1992, <I>Indochine</I> is a vast, panoramic love story set in the twilight years of French Indo-China. Comparisons with David Lean are inevitable, considering director Régis Wargnier's use of the setting as a backdrop to the love-triangle between the three main characters. Catherine Deneuve gives a strong, emotionally restrained performance as Eliane, the plantation owner whose colonial paradise is slowly falling apart. Vincent Perez is magnetic yet thoughtful as the young officer Jean-Baptiste, complemented by Jean Yanne's dry cynicism as the Chief of Police knowingly fighting a losing battle for French culture. Linh Dan Pham is affecting as Camille, Eliane's adopted daughter whose journey from aristocratic ancestry to Marxist induction personifies the changing face of South-East Asia in the period around World War Two. Patrick Doyle's score reinforces the expressive sweep of the direction and orientalisms! are kept to a minimum. <p> <B>On the DVD</B> The 16:9 wide-screen format reproduces best in the domestic scenes, and there are 30 individual chapter points, detailed in the interactive moving menu. The disc also has detailed filmographies for the main cast and director, including an entertaining gossip file for Deneuve. English subtitles are optional. A half-hour location report would have been worthwhile, but overall this is a persuasive presentation of one of the few genuine historical-romantic epics of the 1990s. --<I>Richard Whitehouse</I>

Gustav Flaubert's celebrated novel of obsessive ardour undergoes a dazzling retrofit for the screen, courtesy of French neurosis-master Claude Chabrol. The basic story (a woman's selfish quest for happiness ends up obliterating all she holds dear) may be the same but Chabrol's talent for biting through to the dark marrow of passion makes this a startling experience, even for people familiar with the source material or the numerous other cinematic adaptations. Casting Isabelle Huppert in the title role (she's at least a decade older than the standard conception of this wilfully tragic heroine) was a potentially risky gambit that paid off big; underneath her glorious surface lies a startling foundation of brilliant ice. The same can be said about this stunning film. Viewers intrigued by this potent actress-director pairing may also want to check out <I>The Story of Women</I> and the wonderful <I>La Ceremonie</I>. Devotees of prolific Spanish schlockmeister Jesus Franco won't be too surprised that <I>Dr Jekyll's Mistresses</I> features neither Dr Jekyll or his mistresses; the current title is a meaningless substitute for the original <I>The Secret of Dr Orlof</I>. A notional sequel to Franco's breakthrough <I>The Awful Dr Orlof</I>, it opens with a dying scientist revealing a lack of judgment in estimating the character of a colleague (You're ambitious, but you're a dedicated genius not an unscrupulous madman) to whom he wills his researches into turning corpses into pasty-faced killer zombies who can home in on ultrasound emitted by junky costume jewellery. Having murdered his own brother for fooling around with his wife (Luisa Sala), the genial scientist (Marcelo Jauregui) reanimates his relative (Hugo Blanco) and for some obscure reason sends the creature out to strangle tarty girls who work in a nearby nightclub. When the monster's innocent daughter (Agnes Spaak) shows up at the castle to claim her inheritance, she catches on that something is amiss ('Ever since I came here, I've sensed something secret in this house--the life you live with Uncle Conrad is just too tragic for words'). <p> Technically far more competent than most Franco films, this makes eerie use of Spanish landscapes and manages an odd noir-ish cheesecake in the killer-bothered, jazz-scored nightclub scenes. Too slow actually to be good, it is undeniably weird, and the dubbed dialogue is consistently funny. <p> <B>On the DVD:</B> <I>Dr Jekyll's Mistresses</I> on disc is an English dub of a French release cut with a surprising amount of nudity for a 1964 film as the monster ogles and strangles strippers. These scenes (one is still in French) are a little wobblier than the rest of the picture, as if spliced in from another source. Print quality is excellent, with lovely deep blacks. The packaging misspells the title as <I>Dr Jeckyll's Mistresses</I>. --<I>Kim Newman</I>

<I>Full Moon in Paris</I>, the fourth of Eric Rohmer's <I>Comedies and Proverbs</I>, is also the most ironic and, in many ways, the most judgmental of his films. Louise (Pascale Ogier), a restless designer bored with sleepy suburban life outside of Paris, lives with her lover, Remy (Tcheky Karyo), a stable architect happy with a calm home life and a long-term relationship. The independent Louise decides to move back into her old Paris apartment during the week, losing herself in the bustle of dinner parties and nightclubs and single men, while spending her weekends back with Remy. Louise becomes briefly entangled with another man, a spontaneous musician who is the opposite of Remy, but in a neat twist on the formula, Remy himself drifts to another--at the suggestion of Louise herself. <p> Willowy Ogier's kittenish sexuality and zest for life are wrapped in a self-absorbed determination that borders on indifference, but for the most part this is another wryly witty look at modern love from the master of the sophisticated romantic comedy. Fabrice Luchini plays Louise's best friend and conniving confidante, Octave, and Laszlo Szabo appears as a café patron who pontificates on the magical effects of the full moon. Ogier, who died shortly after the film's release, designed many of the handsome sets. Rohmer followed this with perhaps his most generous character study, the modestly magical romantic adventure <I>Summer</I>. --<I>Sean Axmaker</I>

Eurotrash sex/horror auteur Jesus Franco's <I>Female Vampire</I> delivers nudity, drinking of human body fluids, plentiful zoom shots, languorous music, a vestigial storyline and the odd moment of surrealism (a flapping bat car ornament). It opens with a soulful-eyed brunette (Lina Romay) striding through misty woods wearing only thigh-boots, a leather belt and a black cloak, then chancing across a breeder of tropical birds upon whom she performs an act of oral sex that winds up painfully and fatally for the poor chump. <p> One of Franco's better films, this still has an extremely leisurely pace which means that the story drifts dreamlike (or tediously, depending on your point of view) between protracted but unappealing sexual encounters as a smitten fellow with the requisite 70s porno moustache (Jack Taylor), a vampire-hating doctor (director Franco) and a blind coroner pursue the gloomy Countess for their own reasons. The vampire is mute but has an Anne Rice-style whining voice-over, and the dubbing means that everyone else seems equally dissociated from the words that fail to approximate their lip movements. Fans of Lina's frustrated naked writhings get to see her do the thing on top of several men and women, a bed, a tree and in a bath of blood. To Franco-philes, it's a masterpiece; to everyone else, wearisome tat.<p> <B>On the DVD:</B> <I>Female Vampire</I> on disc comes with a nice widescreen transfer of a print that goes on longer than any previous UK release (though it runs 94 mins, not the 101 listed on the cover); an alternate opening sequence (with the title <I>The Bare Breasted Countess</I>); a fairly complete list of Franco credits; a French trailer (for <I>La Comtesse aux Seins Nus</I>); and four brief alternate scenes from a version of the film with less explicit sex but more blood (i.e., necks are bitten but not private parts). --<I>Kim Newman</I>
