Racing Stripes
In the middle of a raging thunderstorm a travelling circus accidentally leaves behind some very precious cargo - a baby zebra. Rescued by horse farmer Nolan Walsh, he is taken back to his home to his young daughter Channing. Walsh was once a champion thoroughbred trainer, but has given it up for a quiet life with Channing on their modest Kentucky farm. The little zebra, or 'Stripes', as Channing calls him is soon introduced to the farm's misfit troupe of barnyard residents, led by a grumpy Shetland Pony named Tucker. Stripes and Channing both hope to compete in and win the nearby Kentucky Derby and they are soon thrown into a world of elite athletes, intense competition and enormous stakes. Stripes must prove he's fast enough and tough enough to run with the big horses to land in the winner's circle at the legendary Kentucky Open.

When you start watching <i>Racing Stripes</i>, you may not be prepared for how unbelievably cute a young zebra is. A travelling circus accidently abandons an adorably helpless zebra in the middle of Kentucky on a stormy night. Fortunately, the wee zebra is found by Nolan Walsh, a brilliant horse trainer who's given up his calling after a riding accident that killed his wife. His daughter Channing names the zebra Stripes and, before you know it, Stripes has grown to young adulthood and is aching to race at a nearby track. Thus begins a fairly formulaic triumph-over-adversity tale combined with talking animals--but <i>Racing Stripes</i> understands its formula and executes it without any pretensions. It doesn't hit the bullseye struck by <i>Babe</i> (an earlier triumph-over-adversity tale combined with talking animals), and there are bad puns and gags aplenty, but Greenwood's solid presence gives the movie an unexpected emotional fullness.
