The MIT Press The Mind Doesn't Work That Way: The Scope and Limits of Computational Psychology (Bradford Book S.)
Criticism from within always stings more sharply. When one of computational psychology's peppiest cheerleaders questions the enthusiasm of his fellows, we can expect some juicy, if civil, dialogue ahead. Jerry Fodor does just this in The Mind Doesn't Work That Way: The Scope and Limits of Computational Psychology. Named to answer Steven Pinker's How the Mind Works, this short, focused and heavy book calls Pinker and others to task for claiming too much for CP. While acknowledging that it's by far the best theory of cognition that we've got, he expresses concern about the popularisations--and privately held beliefs--that imply that the strongly nativist computational theory explains, or will explain, our conscious and intentional being in toto. Using scholarly, diplomatic and sometimes hysterically funny language, Fodor demolishes the notion that CP has anything to say about large-scale or global thinking, and casts doubt on its future prospects. Proceeding more scientifically than his scientist colleagues, he proposes that a better theory of mind is looming, and will encompass CP much as relativity encompassed classical mechanics. Encouraging debate on the fundamentals of this increasingly popular theory, especially within the ranks of its adherents, can only be good for the theory and for cognitive science itself. The Mind Doesn't Work That Way follows in the great philosophical tradition of clobbering ideas in order to make them stronger, and provides a great mental workout for the reader. --Rob Lightner

The MIT Press Advice for a Young Investigator (Bradford Book S.)
Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) was an incredible scientist--he made invaluable contributions to neuroanatomy, including some of the most beautiful scientific illustrations since Vesalius. He was also a popular author and above all a dedicated teacher, offering fatherly advice to students and young researchers on a wide range of topics. After he achieved success as a scientist, he wrote the first edition of Reglas y Consejos sobre Investigación Biológia (los tonicos de la voluntad) (1916). That work has been retranslated and presented by MIT Press as Advice for a Young Investigator. Although the wisdom contained in this slim, elegant volume is almost a century old, it's as fresh and useful today as it no doubt was then. What student or researcher wouldn't benefit from advice given by a mentor who has carefully examined his own life and career? Translator Larry Swanson writes in the foreword:

Hard work, ambition, patience, humility, seriousness and passion for work, family and country were among the traits he considered essential. But above all, master technique and produce original data; all the rest will follow.
Cajal's guidance on such things as the scientific method, resolve, undue admiration of authority, passion for reputation, reading and diseases of the will is priceless. Every page of this little book is filled with read-aloud gems:
If a solution fails to appear after all of this, and yet we feel success is just around the corner, try resting for a while.... Like the early morning frost, this intellectual refreshment withers the parasitic and nasty vegetation that smothers the good seed. Bursting forth at last is the flower of truth.
Whether you're writing a dissertation, conquering writer's block to get that paper submitted to a journal, beginning a new research project, or just starting out in a scientific career, Advice for a Young Investigator will inspire, edify and amuse you. --Therese Littleton, Amazon.com

The MIT Press The MIT Encyclopedia of the Cognitive Sciences (Bradford Book S.)
The state-of-the-art knowledge about knowledge is contained within the MIT Encyclopedia of the Cognitive Sciences. Its 471 comprehensive entries cover topics as diverse as Hemispheric Specialization, Epiphenomenalism and Algorithms in 1000-1500 words each, thoroughly cross-indexed and extensively referenced to launch further research. A few biographical entries are also included, highlighting such giants as Alan Turing and Santiago Ramon y Cajal. The editors selected their contributors well, assigning Neurobiology of Consciousness to Christof Koch and Francis Crick, for example. Even better, six longer essays introduce the Encyclopedia ;, each providing an overview of one of the six disciplines that overlap to form cognitive science: computational intelligence; culture, cognition and evolution; linguistics and language; neurosciences; philosophy, and psychology. These are enormously helpful to the researcher, as they are general enough to allow easy entry while still being meaty enough to be useful themselves as well as pointers to specific entries. The MIT Encyclopedia of the Cognitive Sciences, while not a casual entry into the field, is an essential addition to the reference shelf for anyone seriously interested in AI, consciousness, or other aspects of natural and artificial brains. --Rob Lightner, Amazon.com

The MIT Press I of the Vortex: From Neurons to Self (Bradford Book S.)
What is it about neuroscience that graces its practitioners with humility? Rodolfo Llinas of the NYU School of Medicine continues this tradition of quietly tackling the deepest issues in I of the Vortex. This exposition on the evolution and development of consciousness is accessible and intriguing enough to interest readers more philosophically than scientifically oriented. Grounded in research, the book posits our awareness as an artefact of the cortico-thalamic binding of perceptions and movements in synchrony; Llinas uses this theory as a launching pad for more far-reaching considerations of selfhood all the more relevant for their correlation with the facts. Charmingly illustrated with artistic and scientific images cleverly supporting the arguments, the book is a quick if challenging read and explains all the scientific basics for those approaching from the humanities. Synthesising evolution, philosophy and neuroscience is becoming an increasingly popular endeavour for introspective eggheads, and we should be grateful: the question of consciousness affects us all and touches on every other field from theology to particle physics. I of the Vortex is a welcome contribution to the theory of mind and essential reading for the introspective. --Rob Lightner

The MIT Press Dreaming as Delirium: How the Brain Goes Out of Its Mind (Bradford Book S.)
A cigar is just a cigar again! Psychiatrist and neurophysiologist J Allan Hobson rouses us from our self-absorption in Dreaming as Delirium, an exploration of what neuroscience has pieced together about our sleeping lives. Freud, after all, was first a neurologist, turning to his theories of symbolic wish-fulfilment to cover gaps in contemporary knowledge. While those gaps remain, they narrow a bit each year, and Hobson's unique clinical perspective gives him great insight into what might lie in their depths. Writing with humanistic charm, he weaves personal stories, clinical narrative, and research findings into a wide-ranging theory encompassing attention, desire, motivation, and our nearly desperate need for coherence. Ironically, this need drives us to tell ourselves the craziest stories at night--perhaps, he suggests, because we are experiencing sensations similar to those of hallucinating schizophrenics. While far from conclusive, the evidence Hobson presents strongly suggests that we are closing in on one of the most oldest and most elusive mysteries in human experience. Thoughtful and wise, Dreaming as Delirium shows the reader that hard science can reach the depths of our souls and make us more human, not less. --Rob Lightner

The MIT Press Understanding Intelligence (Bradford Book S.)
Most artificial intelligence seems artificially dumb. Sure, Deep Blue can beat a chess grandmaster two games out of three, but could it get out of the way of an oncoming bus? AI researchers are coming to understand that if we want more than idiot savants, we'll need to build our machines from the ground up--a behaviour-based approach. Rolf Pfeifer, Head of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Zurich and Christian Scheier, Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Zurich and Caltech, have put together Understanding Intelligence, the definitive introduction to this approach for students, amateurs and professionals alike. As they admit, there are plenty of gaps in our knowledge, so they take pains to make our ignorance as well as our knowledge explicit and encourage thinking beyond the text with Issues to Think About at the end of each chapter.
Delving into neural networks, subsumption architecture, principles and design of intelligent systems, and future applications, the authors strive to exhaust the literature and compress it into concise, readable text with plenty of illustrations where appropriate. Given the freshness of the material, it feels less like a textbook and more like a treasure map--we don't know what we'll find when we get there but we know it's going to be good. Whether robotics is a career, a hobby or a side interest for you, Understanding Intelligence will help you get to work from the bottom up. --Rob Lightner, amazon.com
