EMI Records (UK) The Proclaimers - The Best Of 1987-2002
This Best of collection is a richly entertaining catalogue of The Proclaimers' resolute failure to fit in with anyone else's ideas of what pop stars are supposed to be. This, along with their glorious voices and frustratingly erratic knack for simple affecting songs, has always been one of their strengths: Craig and Charlie Reid may look like they were dressed by a well-meaning aunt, and wear glasses thick enough to prevent a spaceship disintegrating on re-entry, and be unfashionably keen on God, marriage and family, but they're for real. The early videos, from Letter to America, in which they bellow, pink-cheeked, from a windswept hillside, to the sublime Sunshine On Leith, recorded in a dilapidated pub, are clearly intended to reinforce The Proclaimers' rugged authenticity.
It's ironic, then, that the best clips here are the ones on which The Proclaimers disdain their usual asceticism and allow themselves to be caught having a good time being driven through a glittering Las Vegas on Let's Get Married, wearing tartan suits for What Makes You Cry?, or impersonating Nashville gentry for their lovely version of Roger Miller's King of the Road. The showbiz approach doesn't always work, though: the video for The Doodle Song is mesmerisingly bad, like a cross between Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love, a Gap commercial and a beginners aerobics class.
On the DVD: The Best of The Proclaimers, 1987-92 has rather desultory special features. There's a discography, song lyrics, a link to The Proclaimers' official website and a television advertisement for the Best of album. It seems strange that nobody thought to include the electronic press kit which was sent out to media with their Persevere album, which was a very funny and illuminating history of The Proclaimers, and would have made a worthwhile addition to this package. --Andrew Mueller

EMI Records (UK) Robbie Williams - Live At The Albert [2001]
For one night only the Robbie Williams showcase Live At The Albert is a fantastic testament to what was a very special evening. The concert offered tracks from his Rat Pack covers album Swing When You're Winning an album that finally gave him across the board appeal from nostalgic Grannies to hormonally imbalanced teenagers. With the average ticket price well into three figures and the likes of Tara Palmer-Tompkinson, Bob Geldof and Nicole Kidman in the stalls, this was no ordinary Robbie concert. Backed by a full swing band, accompanied by a slew of glamorous dancers, compered by Rupert Everett and featuring duets with John Lovitz, Jane Horrocks, the scene-stealing Jonathan Wilkes and even Old Blue Eyes himself Frank Sinatra (albeit in video form), Robbie takes centre stage and performs like never before. Classic track follows classic track--from The Lady is a Tramp (which Robbie dedicates to his last three girlfriends), to Mr Bojangles to My Way, each and every one of them is instantly recognisable, even to most of the younger members of the audience. Directed by Hamish Hamilton (the man behind the spectacular U2 Elevation DVD) this is a great up close and personal view of an intimate gig.
On the DVD: The disc is lovingly put together in glorious 5.1 surround sound. The DVD also features the documentary Well Swung which follows Robbie all the way to Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, where he recorded some of the tracks for the album with members of Frank's original band. There is also a gallery of luscious shots of Robbie on location and at the Capitol Studios. At times it does tend towards the schmaltzy, with Robbie fighting back the tears when the video footage of Frank singing booms out across the Albert Hall, but this is scant criticism. All in all this is a fantastic performance from a legend in the making. --Helen Marquis

EMI Records (UK) John Lennon - Gimme Some Truth [2000]
An instant classic when released in September 1971, John Lennon's Imagine was the ex-Beatle's solo masterpiece, and its musical legacy is matched here by priceless footage of Lennon's creative process, independently edited from original 16-millimeter footage by producer-director Andrew Solt with the hands-off approval of Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono. Incorporating footage from John and Yoko's original film Imagine (clips of which were previously included in the 1988 documentary Imagine: John Lennon), Gimme Some Truth presents Lennon, Ono, co-producer Phil Spector and a host of gifted musicians in a fluid context of conflict, community and craftsmanship. Bearing witness to every stage of the recording process, this 63-minute documentary succeeds as a visual diary, a study of familiar music in its infancy and a revealing portrait of the then-30-year-old Lennon--from witty clown to confrontational perfectionist--at the peak of his post-Fab Four inspiration.
The film's horizons expand with a casual montage of Lennon's celebrity lifestyle, including New York party footage (by film theorist Jonas Mekas) featuring such guests as Miles Davis, Andy Warhol and Jack Nicholson. Excerpts of a 1971 BBC interview reveal John and Yoko at their most thoughtful, discussing socio-sexual issues that remain compellingly relevant. But the true value of Gimme Some Truth remains in the creation of music at the Lennons' estate at Tittenhurst Park, Ascot, England. The ballad Imagine is followed from rawness to completion, and the track-by-track progress is highlighted by Jealous Guy (after which Lennon playfully compliments Spector's studio wizardry), and especially Gimme Some Truth, which alternates between full mix and isolated vocal track. With George Harrison on guitar, Lennon freely admits that How Do You Sleep? is a deliberately nasty criticism of Paul McCartney, but this remarkable film never dwells on negatives. A precious record of John Lennon's time on earth, Gimme Some Truth is as honest as it is entertaining. And while purists may object to the DVD's remastered sound--which was carefully remixed for Dolby Digital 5.1-channel stereo at Abbey Road studios--few would deny that this film is an important and illuminating document that any John Lennon fan will cherish. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com

EMI Records (UK) Ewan McGregor And Charley Boorman - Long Way Round [Special Edition]
Long Way Round is a documentary detailing the 20,000-mile motorcycle trip Ewan McGregor took around the world with best friend Charley Boorman over 115 days. Their trip took them from London through locales such as Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Siberia, and Canada, to name a few, before ending in New York.
Armed with a cameraman, McGregor and Boorman encounter separation anxiety from their families; a shifty stranger (later revealed to be Mafia) who leads them through winding dark corridors to a posh hotel room; delays at international borders; hosts who offer them animal parts for dinner; injuries, equipment breakdowns, and more.
The pair also film their own video diaries, in which they voice concerns and frustrations. The result is an emotional, rich breadth of experiences, from the hardship of logistical setbacks paired with the joy of visiting the children of Chernobyl and encountering hospitable locals who insist on escorting them wherever they go. McGregor and Boorman also make witty emcees, cheerfully upbeat even when they wonder aloud if one of their gun-happy hosts is a psycho murderer. The seven-episode series concludes with their emotional ride into the Big Apple and some surprises for the pair courtesy of the show's producers.
Long Way Round may have been an arduous once-in-a-lifetime experience, but you can't help but hope McGregor and Boorman suit up for another road trip someday. -- Ellen A. EMI Records (UK) Queen - The DVD Collection: Live At Wembley Stadium (Two Disc Set) [1986]
A complete concert of one of the best bands live, Queen Live at Wembley Stadium is the record of one remarkable summer night in 1986. This really was history in the making: no-one, except possibly Freddie Mercury, could have guessed that the band would only ever play two more concerts in the UK and would never return to Wembley.
Director Gavin Taylor's omnipresent cameras, including stunning aerial views, also remind us of the glories of the now-defunct stadium and its signature towers, such a perfect venue for Queen's epic staging, with their massive video screen and dazzling light show.
The second night playing to a capacity crowd saw the band at the peak of their form, riding high on the popular success of their recent string of hits: A Kind of Magic, I Want to Break Free, Radio Ga Ga and One Vision all feature here alongside earlier favourites from Seven Seas of Rhye through Bohemian Rhapsody and We Will Rock You to Another One Bites the Dust and Under Pressure. In short, a veritable greatest hits collection--all performed with larger-than-life gusto, boundless exuberance and impeccable musicianship. In a period when most new bands were content to mime along to weedy synthesised backing tracks, Queen were simply bigger, bolder and a whole lot more fun than anyone else. Freddie Mercury's extraordinary stage presence is likely to remain forever unsurpassed.
On the DVD: Queen Live at Wembley Stadium is a superb memento of this memorable night. Disc 1 contains the entire Saturday gig (almost two hours) remastered in vivid DTS 5.1 or PCM Stereo. The second disc collects both contemporary and brand-new material, including new interviews with Brian May and Roger Taylor. A Beautiful Day is a good documentary made at the time. More exciting is the wealth of unseen footage, both from the Friday night show and the band in rehearsal. There are Queen Cam views of each band member, and a photo gallery. Most poignant is a time-lapse short, Wembley Towers, showing the philistine destruction of these national monuments. It's a fitting epitaph for this great live band. --Mark Walker

EMI Records (UK) Robbie Williams - Nobody Someday [2002]
The rock-umentary Nobody Someday both challenges and reaffirms everything we know, love and hate about Robbie Williams. Directed and narrated by Brian Hill, the man behind the infamous early-90s Australian docu-soap Sylvania Waters, the film is a frank representation of Robbie's 2001 European tour, which isn't always that sympathetic towards the star. Although Williams' continuous discussion about his shortcomings is at times endearing, his obsessive chattering and self-pity about his alcohol and drug problems soon sounds like a worn-out old record. It's also not always apparent when Williams is playing the fool and when he is not: the infamous hotel room scene, when Robbie convincingly rants to the camera about the German Chancellor commandeering his hotel suite, is a case in point.
Shot in both colour and black and white, the film is a mix of some stunning live concert performance material and revealing behind-the-scenes footage. Key events featured include an obsessed fan pushing Williams off stage in Stuttgart, and the comical technical problems at the Paris gig. Despite the production's attempts to demystify star, it actually generates many more questions than it answers, adding further complexities to the brand/man known as Robbie Williams.
On the DVD: Nobody Someday on DVD has a bonus quiz presented by Andy Franks, which features questions about the film. Each correct answer results in exclusive clips from the tour which didn't make it to the final cut of the film. These include Robbie declaring his undying love for his housemate and life-long pal Jonathan Wilkes, and exclusive live performances from the tour. There's also a bonus photo gallery, which features some stunning photographs taken by Scarlet Page and Diana Scrimegeour. --John Galilee

EMI Records (UK) Duran Duran - Arena
Released for the first time on DVD to coincide with Duran Duran's 25th anniversary tour, Arena (An Absurd Notion) was the band's first live album and foray into film. Pop idols ranging from Elvis to the Spice Girls have all attempted to make the crossover to the big screen; often such celluloid adventures turn into disasters, with the performers' acting talents rarely matching their vocal proficiencies. Filming is squeezed into a few days between the recording of a new studio album and other duties such as touring, ensuring that the end result is typically dire.
Arena manages to avoid many of those pitfalls by giving the band no opportunity to act, instead focusing exclusively on their live concert performance. An additional SF sub plot is included centred on Doctor Duran--the evil dictator from cult film Barbarella, from whom the band got their name. The doctor, played by original actor Milo O'Shea, returns to earth from exile confused by the fans' call for Duran Duran. Crash-landing his ship underneath the stage, he and his three Brummie henchmen are determined to disrupt the show. Despite their attempts to abduct fans, and create anarchy the band continue to perform.
Very much a product of its time, the film combines nomadic futuristic imagery with a big budget. Following the critical acclaim of the Wild Boys video, Arena seeks to capitalise on its style but also take the promotional video to a new extreme using expensive sets and special effects. The Barbarella sub-plot serves little purpose apart from illustrating the story behind the band's name. The live performance footage is excellent though, not just because of the music but also the guys' authentic mullet hairstyles.
On the DVD:The original Making of Arena documentary is included on the DVD, along with a vintage interview with Simon Le Bon. The dubbed TV ad for the video and album is also featured along with a trailer, and video mix. Considering the age of the film, the sound and visuals have both transferred well to DVD, with the extended mix of The Reflex sounding particularly good. --John Galilee

EMI Records (UK) Coldplay - Live 2003
Coldplay are on peak form in Live 2003, riding high on the phenomenal success of A Rush of Blood to the Head. This CD/DVD two-pack was filmed (on Super-16mm film) and recorded in Sydney's Horden Pavilion on July 21 and 22, 2003, during a year-long world tour and the medium-sized arena provides a fitting stage for the London-based rock quartet; not so grand as to overwhelm the music, but large enough to indicate their large and loyal following, which includes enthusiastic fans of both genders.
Especially when played in DTS 5.1 surround, this 90-minute concert is richer, thicker and (of course) louder than Coldplay's studio recordings, lending a wall-of-sound expansiveness to the band's signature sound, which draws from such diverse influences as Genesis, Pink Floyd, The Verve, U2 and their own unique sonic landscape.
Politik gets the gig off to a rousing start, and other impressive highlights include Daylight, Yellow, the as-yet-unreleased new song Moses, and the popular hits In My Place, Clocks, and The Scientist. And while the concert visuals are slick and professional (perhaps placing a bit too much emphasis on singer/frontman Chris Martin), this DVD and CD--the latter containing a truncated 70-minute version of the same performance--are best appreciated for their pristine audio quality. Culled from 400 hours of home video, the 40-minute concert diary represents a wasted opportunity, enjoyable for hardcore fans but offering no insight into the band or its individual members. Much better, then, to play the concert at healthy high volume, and appreciate Coldplay in the prime of their young career. --Jeff Shannon

EMI Records (UK) Doves - Where We're Calling From [2002]
Watching Doves: Where We're Calling From, with its plethora of additional material above and beyond the top-quality music, it's easy to forget that the Doves have only released two albums to date. This is a band that has worked tirelessly to nurture a dark but accessibly intelligent sound and image--a mix of Oasis-style pop-rock coupled with the bleak desperation of Radiohead.
Thematically, the disc draws on their darker side. It has a state-of-the-art opening menu, incorporating a panoramic sub-apocalyptic cityscape, and a haunting soundtrack. This continues a theme established in some of their promo videos, which mock the fake idealism of modern society, particularly the loss of identity through consumerism (There Goes the Fear) and the failure of planned urban utopias (Pounding).
Mourning the demise of craftsmanship, the sepia video for Sea Song comprises footage of a man constructing a wooden rocking chair. Contributing to the strange, claustrophobic atmosphere of the DVD, the concert footage recorded at Cornwall's futuristic Eden project includes live performances of their greatest hits and selected album tracks. Performed in front of the eerily lit domes, the show sums up the Doves' weird mass appeal.
On the DVD: Doves: Where We're Calling From heralds a new era in music DVD by reinventing selection menus. Instead of numerous sub-menus, all of the features are included on one huge menu that can be navigated by using the left and right keys on the remote control, creating a 360-degree feel. However like an unwieldy child, the disc's interactive features need constant attention so that they behave in the way you want. --John Galilee

EMI Records (UK) Robbie Williams - The Robbie Williams Show [2002]
The Robbie Williams Show is the first of many products which EMI hope will recompense them for their huge investment in Robbie. Stylised as a kitschy 1960s light entertainment special, and recorded on one of the James Bond stages at Pinewood Studios, the show opens in a spectacular manner with 80 dancers perched behind the star on a 60 ft scaffolding set. Produced as a live and intimate TV special to promote the album Escapology, the show also provides further evidence of the star's quest to become an all-round entertainer.
Between the songs, Williams teases and cajoles the audience with his usual patter of innuendo and self-parody. He also candidly discusses the multi-million pound record deal, his separation from long-time songwriting collaborator Guy Chambers, and his 12-month break from performing live. The show is faultless, and achieves its primary objective of showcasing the new album through a sensible mix of familiar favourites and fresh material. The dancers, musicians and stage set are also excellent, and provide further evidence of how Robbie Williams Inc. has become a mammoth enterprise with the fortunes of many riding on his success. However, his continued on and off-stage lampooning of his fame and fortune becomes immensely irritating after a while: change this record Robbie, before it wears you and your fans out.
On the DVD: The Robbie Williams Show DVD reproduces the garish colours of the stage set and lighting, and the soundtrack (available in ordinary stereo, and 5.1 Surround) provides added panache to this light-entertainment spectacular. As well as the 23-minute backstage footage, comprising the standard Robbie-walking-around-with-no- shirt-on material, other extras include Hamish Brown's photos of the show, alternative versions of three of the songs, and footage rescued from the cutting-room floor of Robbie performing Revolution. Extra footage can also be accessed following the successful completion of the Follow the Lights game. --John Galilee
