Even the most ardent of <i>Shrek</i> fans would have to admit that so far the games based on the big green goofball haven't quite been up to scratch. In fact they've been completely rubbish. <i>Shrek 2</i>, based directly on the new movie, is a step back in the right direction.<p> At its core the game is a sort of scrolling beat-'em-up, interspersed with numerous little puzzles to overcome as you try to navigate the various fairytale realms. What makes things a lot more interesting is that you actually manage a team of four characters at a time, taking control of one at a time and having the other three follow along behind. The defaults include Shrek, Fiona and Donkey, but you also get to use Gingerbread Man, Lil' Red, Puss in Boots and The Big Bad Wolf.<p> The best bit is that if you can get three friends to help, then one person can actually control a character each, which really livens things up. But even in single player mode any of the characters can get a chance to take part in a Hero Time mini-game that provides a enjoyable respite from the main game as you take a ride on a dragon with Donkey or indulge in a singalong with Fiona.<p> Although the graphics are impressive (much more so than the sound, which doesn't feature the original movie cast), the main gameplay can get a bit monotonous. But for <i>Shrek</i> fans and general young 'uns there's more to enjoy here than with most film licenses. --<I>David Jenkins</I>

As Shrek, his love interest and donkey sidekick are welcomed to the big screen for a second animated adventure, publisher Activision has revived the videogame equivalent to bring us the aptly named Shrek 2 for PC. As with most virtual movie tie-ins, Shrek 2 sees players embarking on an adventure faithful to the film and visiting a variety of familiar big screen locations. The game world and its inhabitants are convincing, and in general, the game is vibrant. Additionally, players will be subjected to humorous dialogue and an array of genuinely amusing gags, which helps immerse them in the Shrek world. But unlike its console counterparts, the PC version of Shrek 2 is by far a simpler deal overall. The environments lack any kind of complexity, resident nasties are easily disposed of, there's no multi-player game, fewer playable characters and easier puzzles. It's a game clearly designed for a very young audience. The controls are also simple: the W, A, S and D keys accommodate movement, whilst the left and right mouse buttons are used for attacking and jumping. And that's it. It's very easy to pick up, and because the PC version lacks any kind of learning curve, youngsters can play like masters from the beginning. There's no denying that Shrek 2 on PC isn't as in-depth as those on console, but to young and inexperienced players that's not necessarily a bad thing. Add extra controls and more complex gameplay and you run the risk of confusing your target audience, so in that respect, the developer has done a grand job.
