Picture Lions The Badger's Bath (Percy the Park Keeper)
When Percy decides Badger needs a bath, Badger has other ideas. Rather than waste the lovely hot water, the soap and the bubbles, Percy decides to use the bath for himself. Suddenly Badger joins him rather unexpectedly as he falls out of the tree in which he has been hiding.
Percy's insistence on Badger having a bath, and Badger's aversion to it, is just like the interaction between parent and child. It is this familiar relationship between Percy and his animal friends which so delights the young readers of these books. Nick Butterworth's humorous text and charming, expressive illustrations perfectly complement each other to produce books that have an enduring popularity. (Ages 2 to 5)

Pocket Books The Last Lighthouse Keeper
Viking, North Utsira, South Utsira, Dogger, Fisher, German Bight. The exotic names of the shipping forecast--the opening words of Alan Titchmarsh's second novel--never fail to evoke an annoyingly patriotic nostalgia in Brits: no matter what else changes, their country is still an island with miserable weather.
The fictional Cornish world of Pencurnow Cove seems at first sight to be the forecast's literary equivalent: the kind of village where the landmarks (pub and post office) are populated by obligingly eccentric locals; where Loaded and FHM are sold under the counter, as overly racy; and where borderline criminals are easily identified by hints of foreignness (Len Gryler looked as if he was of Italian ancestry) or a loud London accent (Bladdy hell, woman). It's the kind of world only Enid Blyton ever lived in. But Titchmarsh's nostalgic Cornwall is no life-enhancing, organic community: it serves primarily as a retreat for battered victims of the real world. Will Elliott has spent the last six years in Prince Albert Rock Lighthouse, failing to grieve for his pregnant wife, killed in a hit-and-run; Amy Finn is a one-time Ballet Rambert ballerina, felled by a knee injury and plagued by her ex-lover and dance partner. When the lighthouse closes, Will buys a motor launch and attempts to build a new life; his attraction to Amy threatens to make him face his grief. Titchmarsh seems unsure what to make of the dilemmas facing the inhabitants of Pencurnow Cove. Though mourning the passing of the lighthouses, he appears to embrace the possibilities of the new world. Following his more upbeat bestseller Mr MacGregor, The Last Lighthouse Keeper is a gentle, well-written tale, whose picturesque setting will no doubt appeal to the tourist in us all--but in the sudden, deeply-felt sufferings of its hero, there's a glimpse of something much tougher. --Alan Stewart

Picture Lions The Owl's Lesson (Percy the Park Keeper)
Stories from Nick Butterworth's Percy the Park Keeper series are read and loved by many. Inspired by the author's family walks in the park, Butterworth has recreated the beauty of the outdoors into very readable tales.
More challenging than many from the same series, in The Owl's Lesson Percy is called upon to rectify a problem. A fledgling has been stranded by his migrating flock. He must learn to fly or he will be stranded. Percy enrols the Owl into becoming a flying teacher. Will the little fledgling be able to catch up with his friends before they get too far? A charming tale beautifully illustrated, will entertain again and again. This book introduces more written text per page and contains more challenging grammar. (Ages 5 to 7) --Jon Smith

Nintendo DS Handheld Console Bundle (Includes Zoo Keeper & DS Carry Case)
The Nintendo DS is no ordinary console. What on the face of it appears to be merely an upgraded Game Boy Advance is packed with a suite of never-before-seen features which make it unique within the gaming world.
The most obvious new feature is the two screens (DS stands for dual screen), the bottom of which is a touch screen. This makes an enormous difference to the way you play and interact with the game, as you use a stylus or the handy thumb strap to control the action.
The way this works in a game varies enormously, with first person shooter Metroid Prime: Hunters using the touch screen and D-pad to create a control system that's just as responsive as a PC keyboard and mouse. Other games, like Yoshi's Touch & Go, have you actually drawing on the touch pad to create platforms, while other games use the extra screen to display inventory or map info.
But there's more to the DS than even that. It also has a built-in microphone (one new medical game has you operating on patients with the touch screen and reassuring them everything's going to be okay via the microphone) and it can be connected wirelessly to sixteen or more other consoles. Not only that but some games and utilities even allow it to connect online via Wi-Fi.
Although the DS is far more powerful than the GBA - it can display 3D graphics somewhere between a Nintendo 64 and the GameCube--i t is still backwards compatible, so you can play all your old GBA games in single player mode on the same console.
With a battery life of between 6 and 10 hours the Nintendo DS gets pretty much everything right. With a range of games that seem to offer far more originality and imagination than any other home or portable console this is could well be the most exciting new console of 2005. --David Jenkins
