Hungry Minds Inc,U.S. 3D Studio Max R3 Bible (Bible S.)
3D Studio Max 3 is a large, robust and comprehensive program. In fact, one could describe the 3D Studio Max 3 Bible using the exact same words. With 1,100 pages, including a 50-page index, it covers everything about the basic Max package.
Beginning with all the new features available in release 3 (of which there are many) the book continues by covering subjects such as rendering, post-production and ways to extend the power of Max using plug-ins and Maxscript.
Although a hefty book, its 41 chapters aren't padded with fluff or screenshots--in fact, more screenshots would have been welcome. Each page is filled with step-by-step instructions, tips and notes on how to use just about any feature in Max. Everything seems to be covered, from navigating and customising the Max interface, to basic and advanced modelling, using and controlling lights and cameras, deformations.
Not only does the Max Bible explain everything (there is even a whole chapter on setting up network rendering), but each chapter has at least one, usually two, step-by-step tutorials to demonstrate the features described. The tutorials are usually very short and to the point--designed to demonstrate the workings of a specific feature. For example, the tutorial on using the Motion Capture controller is only four steps, and uses the example of animating a pencil over the surface of a sheet of paper. All the objects are made from primitives, and no time is wasted on modelling and texturing a realistic pencil or a paper surface.
While short tutorials are a great way to learn quickly, longer ones would have been welcome. The colour gallery pages offer some nice examples of high-level work, but they lack explanations of how they were created or how the credited artist approached the scene.
The accompanying CD-ROM offers numerous models and the tutorial elements used throughout the book, with the added bonus of a set of plug-ins for Max 3. The gear-making primitive, the toy brick-making primitive, and several rendering plug-ins (TV Image is cool) are more than worth the cost of the book.
If you need a single point of reference to keep handy when working in Max, 3D Studio Max 3 Bible is a good place to start. If you buy two, you can use them to do arm curls while your version of Toy Story is rendering. --Mike Caputo, Amazon.com

Coriolis Group,U.S. 3D Studio MAX X in Depth
Written for the artist new to 3DS Max, 3DS Max 4 in Depth presents the application from the ground up, starting with interface basics through project construction to final rendering.
Overall, the book presents much of the same information in the manuals, although it uses more examples and screen shots, and the authors write with a more open voice. The enclosed CD-ROM includes all the project files and source material needed for the exercises in the book, and the colour plate gallery offers some inspiring images.
Twenty-one chapters divided into six parts open up 3DS Max 4 in Depth in a way that any beginner can understand. The Big Picture and Working in Max offer overviews of the computer graphics field and how max works, while Modelling, Materials and Textures, Lights, Camera, Render and Animation offer specific chapters on their respective topics.
A favourite chapter, Working Smart, closes the second section. It includes information not normally found in most books of the genre, such as modelling using instancing and clones, using the Mirror and Snapshot tools, aligning objects and other tips and tricks for working efficiently. Analysing scenes and objects using tools such as Summary Info, ideal for determining where to trim scenes or alter models, is also covered.
This is a thorough and understandable book, lacking only in-depth information on Max's programming language MaxScript, which is worthy of a book of its own. For artists new to 3DS Max 4, and especially those new to 3DS Max, 3DS Max 4 in Depth makes a fine handbook and addition to a powerful program. --Mike Caputo

Delmar 3D Studio Max Ground Rules
3ds max 4 Ground Rules is not, despite its name and the picture of a green-lawned golf course on the cover, about creating terrain and landscapes with 3ds max 4, Discreet's 3D CG animation package. It's a new series from Autodesk Press, and its charter is to lay the groundwork for new users on which they can build their own projects.
Michael Todd Peterson is an experienced writer and 3ds max user, and the breadth and depth of his experience shows in this book. More than 600 pages and 17 chapters cover everything from the absolute basics to advanced and complex features. Sections cover installing and navigating the interface of 3ds max 4, and there is a bird's-eye view of the workflow in a Max project--using basic shapes to build a model, using models to build a scene, adding detail with textures, lights and particles, adding and animating a camera, and rendering the finished animation to a movie.
Later parts of the book are about modeling. Techniques are discussed for surface modeling, patch modelling, using splines and compound objects, creating editable meshes and using modifiers and how they work with the stack paradigm. The last third of the book is all about animation: an introduction to animation, using Track View, character animation and special effects animation using particles, space warps and more.
For anyone climbing 3ds max 4's learning curve, this is probably one of the better books available. The author's easy style, the use of screenshots, and the rich material on the CD make this book a valuable asset to any Max user. --Mike Caputo

Charles River Media 3D Studio Max: Building Complex Models (Charles River Media Graphics)
The 3D Studio Max application offers an array of powerful modelling tools, but the type of model and the style of tool can often make building intricate objects a real challenge. 3D Studio Max: Building Complex Models attempts to break down the process of complex modelling into digestible chunks using Max's native tools as well as third-party plug-ins. Divided into nine sections and 25 chapters, Building Complex Models opens with a short set of tutorials on how to use Max's native model-making tools, including using splines, lofting, creating compound objects, and NURBS. Other sections cover some of the more popular commercial plug-ins, an array of shareware/freeware modelling plug-ins, particle system modelling, and using Max with other applications to build or texture models. There are several notable points about this book. For one, it is not exclusive to 3D Studio Max. It includes chapters and tutorials that cover a range of programs. While this is not a bad thing, you might be disappointed if you are expecting a solid book on modelling in Max; if you use a variety of applications, or if you work in a studio where sharing data across applications is important, this information might be useful. Also, the vast majority of examples depend on third-party plug-ins. Only the first 85 pages (the five chapters of section A) deal with Max's native toolset. The remaining 350 or so pages explore virtually every commercial or shareware third-party plug-in available. Again, this by itself isn't a bad thing. There are plenty of cool plug-ins available that either make life easier when using Max, or allow you to do things that Max can't normally do by itself. However, Max's native toolset offers a wide array of features, and learning to use them well is vital to becoming proficient with the program. It's a little disappointing to find that more examples weren't offered that illustrate the use of the tools that ship with the program. This is a balanced book, with highs and lows. If you're looking for a book that teaches how to build complex and intricate models using Max, this isn't it. However, if you want to explore the world of available plug-ins, or need to learn how Max can integrate with some other applications, you could do worse by starting that exploration elsewhere. --Mike Caputo
