O'Reilly Dreamweaver MX 2004 the Missing Manual
Dreamweaver MX 2004: The Missing Manual is worth having on hand as you learn to use Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX 2004, the leading software tool for the creation of websites and other HTML interfaces. Dreamweaver is remarkably capable, able to deal intelligently with everything from fonts and images to JavaScript for client-side data validation and embedded Java applets. In most cases, Dreamweaver will save you time over hand-coding--and yield better-looking pages to boot. The program's learning curve, though, isn't trivial.
David McFarland wrote this book, but the influence of esteemed series editor David Pogue is obvious in the careful coverage of features and frequent touches of humour (books about applications can be dull; the books in Pogue's Missing Manual series consistently manage to avoid this problem while maintaining comprehensiveness). The two men treat Dreamweaver's numerous features (and the even more numerous ways of putting them to use) cleverly, with a combination of procedures and side information that clarifies many oddball situations as well as straightforward conditions. One thing: all the screen shots show the Mac OS implementation of Dreamweaver. The text alone addresses the (few) differences that appear in the Microsoft Windows version. --David Wall, Amazon.com
& lt;B>Topics covered: How to create HTML (XHTML and CSS, strictly speaking) documents using Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004. In addition to the basic stuff (text, images, links and frames), the book shows you how to build forms for data submission and embed Flash movies and Java applets. There's also a lot of helpful emphasis on Dreamweaver's productivity features, including snippet libraries and file-transfer utilities. A special section shows you how to do some server-side work with databases --Simon Priestley, Amazon.com.

O'Reilly Windows 2000 Pro: The Missing Manual
Promising to help its readers master the corporate personal computer, Windows 2000 Pro: The Missing Manual explains Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional (the operating system that's meant to replace Windows NT Workstation) to the people who use it. Author Sharon Crawford does a fine job of showing how to get Windows 2000 Professional to do what you want and with the best performance possible. Buy and enjoy this book if you want to understand your work machine as well as you know your home computer, or if you just want an easy-to-read reference to help you figure out new Windows challenges as they pop up.
This book--like most of its Pogue Press littermates--distinguishes itself by the way it deals with its subject software's deviations from common sense. In a model sidebar, Crawford explains why the Permissions window allows you to set both Deny and Allow permissions on a resource. She aptly explains why not allowing access isn't the same as denying access, and similarly focuses light on other confusing details of Windows 2000 Professional. This approach to software and its quirks is what makes this book different from the (many) other How to Use Windows 2000 Professional books on the market. Let's hope that Pogue Press continues to steer its writers away from ponderous documentation whose structure is dictated by menu contents. Books like this are fresh air in a genre that invites drudgery. --David Wall
<B&g t;Topics covered: Windows 2000 Professional for the people who use it. Beginning with the barest essentials (logging on and starting programs), this book proceeds through local area network (LAN) and Internet connectivity, hardware administration and security. Mostly, this is an introductory text, but it covers the operating system thoroughly at the user (as opposed to administrator or programmer) level.

O'Reilly Mac OS X: The Missing Manual
Widely esteemed Mac authority David Pogue weighs in on the latest offering from Cupertino with Mac OS X: The Missing Manual. It's a fact-packed romp through the operating system and the extras that come with it, made resoundingly more readable by the depth of Pogue's knowledge, his familiarity with Mac history, and his eagerness to engage novices as members of the Mac user community. Unlike most books about Mac OS X, this one explores its Unix-like underpinnings (the Apple implementation is called Darwin) pretty thoroughly. However, on the logic that if you wanted to use Unix, you would, Pogue emphasises the traditional, graphical Mac interface over the Terminal window.
Pogue, who's written about Macs for years writes about Macs at the user level with clarity. He's also quite good at dealing with the numerous options and variations that apply to Mac procedures, and makes very good use of sidebars for clarifying details. In a section on printing, for example, Pogue explains why there's no longer an option to turn off background printing (true multitasking has rendered the option obsolete). There's also good coverage of the online iTools, tailored to people unfamiliar with integrating remote resources into their personal computing environments. --David Wall
Topics covered: Apple Mac OS X for people who will use the operating system, either on a standalone computer with Internet access or on a computer that is part of a home or organisational network. Running applications (in Classic mode as well as in native Mac OS X mode), printing, networking, multimedia, security (including Keychain), and utilities are all covered.

O'Reilly Windows Millennium: The Missing Manual
One Windows feature that has not improved over the years is the printed documentation. In fact, it has shrunk almost to the point of invisibility. Windows Millennium: The Missing Manual fills the gap, providing a common-sense practical guide to the latest version of Windows for home users. It is not highly technical, and would suit any user who wants to explore, customise and control their Windows PC.
The handbook opens by explaining the Windows desktop and Start menu, including icons, shortcuts, and the help system. Part Two covers components such as accessories, games, new features including Movie Maker, and the all-important Control Panel. The third part tackles all things Internet, while Part Four concerns printing, adding new hardware and maintaining a healthy system. Finally there is a simple guide to home networking.
The writing is clear and good-humoured, and there are plenty of handy tips and common-sense explanations. The differences between Windows Me and its predecessor, Windows 98, are a little exaggerated, and skilled 98 users will not find much here that is new. Another problem, common with this type of book, is that the author tends to assume that everything works as advertised. There are a few troubleshooting sections, but they do not amount to much. But provided not much goes wrong under the bonnet, this manual will take you a long way towards Windows mastery. --Tim Anderson

O'Reilly Mac OS 9: The Missing Manual
When Apple released Mac OS 9 they proclaimed that the built-in online help was so good that you didn't need a printed manual. Mac OS 9: The Missing Manual by award-winning Macworld author David Pogue shows just how much Mac OS 9 users are missing through Apple's omission. Mac OS 9: The Missing Manual covers all aspects of the Mac operating system in five main sections, describing the fine details of the Mac OS desktop, running and managing applications, understanding the myriad components that make up Mac OS 9, connecting to the Internet and networking your Mac.
Pogue's humorous style combined with detailed descriptions and screen-shots direct from the Mac make even the book's more technical sections easy to follow. You are encouraged to explore functions of the Mac that you may think you know well--such as desktop window views and file lists--to uncover the hidden features and tricks that enable you to use your Mac more efficiently. Moreover, The Missing Manual shows how to unlock the power of the 50 or so new features of Mac OS 9, such as Sherlock 2 and the Keychain, which even experienced Mac users may have neglected.
All the additional software referred to in this manual is available for download from the Missing Manual Web site. No CD-Rom is included--which, as the author points out, makes for a more affordable book. If you are new to the Macintosh, or if you have just upgraded to Mac OS 9, this book is an essential introduction to the capabilities, tricks and time-saving features. Even Power Users will be surprised to learn just how many great features are hidden away in their Mac. --Daniel Jardine
