Sony BMG Stevie Ray Vaughan - Live At Montreux 1982 And 1985
If you have even a passing interest in Stevie Ray Vaughan's peerless mastery of urban blues guitar, you <I>must</I> own <I>Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985</I>. Spaced almost exactly three years apart, these concerts (60 and 93 minutes, respectively) represent the Texan blues god at his fiery best, with Double Trouble (drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon) laying the solid foundation upon which SRV built a Fender-driven sound as fierce as it was perfectly refined. The '82 show was truly success in disguise, because despite booing from a festival audience lulled by a day of acoustic blues, and the stunned dejection that SRV felt after persevering through a uncompromising set, this was the turning point in SRV's career, leading to post-show encounters with Jackson Browne and David Bowie, who proved instrumental in bringing Stevie's music to an appreciative global audience.<p> When Stevie, Chris, and Tommy returned to Switzerland three years later, with organist Reese Wynans adding rich new dimension to the Double Trouble sound, the Montreux crowd was primed for a rip-snorting set, and SRV's jubilant response is a joyous thing to witness. One of SRV's favorite bluesmen, Johnny Copeland, appears for a three-song triumph in a set that's uniformly superior and ecstatically energized. Basic three-camera coverage is all you need, although guitar students--for whom this DVD is a godsend--will surely wish for more emphasis on SRV's picking and fretwork. Recording quality is superb in the Montreux tradition, with 5.1-channel remixes that surpass the original masters. A splendid 23-minute documentary features retrospective interviews with Layton, Shannon, Browne, and John Mayer, and the accompanying booklet includes a heartfelt reminiscence from Bowie. Stevie Ray may be gone, but <I>Live at Montreux</I> ensures that his gold-standard legacy will endure. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Christina Aguilera's <I>My Reflection</I> is a mirror that shows where the teen-pop diva's going (toward grown-up diva-dom as an R&B star) and where she's been (showcasing her navel on a dance-infused tour). Aguilera's first concert video shows that what this girl really wants is to move beyond the bouncy R&B-flavoured pop she's known for. Her cheeky hits (Genie in a Bottle, Come On Over Baby, What a Girl Wants) are followed by songs from <I>Mi Reflejo</I>, her Spanish-language album and <I>My Kind of Christmas</I>, her holiday release. She has sweet duets with R&B legend Dr John on Merry Christmas, Baby and balladeer Brian McKnight on Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, as well as sharing the stage with rapper Lil' Bow Wow (weird, but it works) on So Emotional and Christmas Time. Will Young's latest 'in concert' DVD <I>Live in London</I> finds the former Exeter Uni politics graduate turned original <I>Pop Idol</I> champ and latterday Brit Award winner wooing - rather successfully - the largely female party faithful in the cavernous surroundings of Wembley Arena in December 2004. It's a grand stage for a chap who seems rather like a paragon of old-school British inhibition and no amount of hot 'n' loose sub-Cuban grooving (Over You), dance exertion or even an invitation to Light My Fire results in the breaking of much sweat from his brow. But you can't help warming to his reluctance. Celebrity for celebrity's sake is - quite possibly - some way down the list on Young's priorities and he's evidently working on his more-than-ample talent. Standout performances include two intimate stage sets that put him literally within his fans' reach, most strikingly in a brief reunion with four of his earliest bandmates (including guitarist Scotty Moore and drummer DJ Fontana). This disc includes all the massive hits such as White Flag, Thank You and Here With Me. The DVD footage was shot and mastered in high definition and is available in 5.1 surround sound, whilst the audio has been mixed by Bob Clearmountain who is widely regarded as one of the most experienced and highly regarded sound technicians.

Sony BMG Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine [1997]
This imaginatively titled release contains both footage of Rage Against the Machine in concert and uncensored versions of six of the group's videos. This isn't quite the value for money it might sound, since most of their videos are heavily reliant on concert footage anyway, and in a couple of cases it's difficult to tell one from the other. <p> That said, the concert footage, taken from a few different RATM shows, is crisply shot and conveys enough of RATM's intoxicating (if one-dimensional) ferocity to be effective. A couple of the videos are also worth seeing, if only because they wouldn't have much hope of getting played on television: the clip for Freedom, especially, is a clever and acute retelling of the story of American Indian Movement activist Leonard Peltier, shortly to complete his third decade of imprisonment. <p> <B>On the DVD:</B> <I>Rage Against the Machine</I> on disc has a choice of stereo sound or Dolby Digital 5.1. English subtitles are available on most tracks. Special features include a track selector, contacts for organisations with which RATM are sympathetic, and a book list largely comprising indigestible polemical tracts of the sort often bought, but rarely read, by the earnest students who constitute Rage Against the Machine's core audience. However, given that most bands use any spare capacity on their DVDs to flog T-shirts, RATM deserve credit for trying something different. --<I>Andrew Mueller</I>

Sony BMG Ricky Martin - One Night Only [1999]
Fans of Latino gusset-dampener Ricky Martin will need no encouragement to buy <I>One Night Only</I> other than knowing it exists, so it's commendable to see that what they will get is a pretty good package after all. On the down side, without the kind of slick studio production accorded to his albums it's clear that Martin's voice is, well, rather ordinary. But on the up side, he's beautiful, he's great fun, he's not short on stage presence and his enthusiasm for the Latin music of his native Puerto Rico is entirely genuine (one of the brief reportage snippets scattered throughout this release shows him playing with a samba band--and getting it right, too).<p> There's a spooky moment in the opening number of this huge gig (which took place in Liberty State Park in New York) as the backdrop artfully falls to reveal the twin towers of the World Trade Center framing Martin like Samson's pillars. Once this <I>frisson</I> passes it's good times all the way, with the inevitable Vida Loca and La Copa De La Vida as highlights. Sony BMG Stevie Ray Vaughan And Double Trouble - Live At The El Mocambo [1983]
In 1990, Texas bluesman Stevie Ray Vaughan was just emerging from a long period in which drugs had taken their toll: the previous year's <I> In Step</I> album was the first he had made clean, and the results were a marvel. But then, after sharing a stage with Buddy Guy, Robert Cray and Eric Clapton, he boarded a helicopter to Chicago. It crashed and the career of one of the great blues guitarists was ended.<p>Rewind to 1983 and here is Stevie Ray at the beginning of his fame, his first album with his backing band Double Trouble, <I>Texas Flood</I>, having just been released to critical and popular acclaim. The venue is the El Mocambo club in Toronto, a dark, smoky joint with a laid-back but appreciative clientele. Vaughan, drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon share the tiny stage. The guitarist, bedecked in trademark hat and alligator-skin boots, is pale of complexion, sweating from the heat and physical exertion, and physically much smaller than Shannon, who towers over him. But Vaughan dominates, as much by the magnetism of his flamboyant personality as his guitar playing. And what playing: by turns fiery, funky, then limpid and surprisingly graceful. Here is an authentic blues artist captured in the throes of living through his music. At this early stage in his career he was still very much in thrall to Jimi Hendrix (the flower-power shirt gives it away), as covers of Voodoo Chile and Third Stone from the Sun (the latter a Hendrix-inspired guitar-abuse session) indicate. The highlight of the show, however, is his rendition of Texas Flood which turns out to be an amazing essay on the art of blues guitar. This is a raw, intimate and spontaneous record of a one-off event. All fans of the blues will be grateful to those who had the foresight to capture it on film.<p> <B>On the DVD:</B> The disc allows the viewer to chose a lyrics on/off option, as well as different audio mixes (Dolby Surround or Stereo). This is the 1996 MTV New York show, which proved there and then that Alice's unique brand of dark existentialist metal (talk about being number one in a field of one) never needed wattage to convey that brooding intensity. There are plenty of classics here, including Nutshell and No Excuses, although you won't get any of the earliest stuff and it's a pretty short set overall. While it would be fair to say that this disc could have offered a little more substance, no fan will want to be without it, and experiencing Layne Staley's menacing lisp in the stark environment of an acoustic set somehow returns the whole genre to its roots in the blues. Gnarly.<p><B>On the DVD</B>: The extra features include a chronology which fearlessly (and with plenty of self-deprecating humour) lists the band's long history of near misses as well as their successes. Also included are some wonderful anecdotes, such as the famous occasion when guitarist Jerry Cantrell missed a gig because he forgot how many days there were in November. Sony BMG Elvis Presley - Aloha From Hawaii [1973]
Elvis Presley's performing career, punctuated by its extra-musical achievement as the first global satellite broadcast devoted to a single entertainer. Both the broadcast and its companion album captured the King in his most grandiose persona, fuelled by Hollywood scale and Vegas glitz, as a caped pop superhero.<p>He may have looked trim, but posthumous accounts (especially Peter Guralnick's <I>Careless Love: The Unmaking of Elvis Presley</I>, the second volume in his definitive biography) confirm what a second look suggests--on this evening, Elvis was alternately overwhelmed and distracted, bravura renditions of signature songs (most triumphantly, the American Trilogy medley originated by Mickey Newbury) offset by less-focused readings. Fans may still savour a generous and diverse song list, but viewed beside Presley's earlier, more consistent performances (including a rehearsal the previous night, since released as <I>The Alternate Aloha Concert</I>), this legendary concert anticipates Presley's imminent decline.<p>In this remastered version, three songs have been deleted due to music clearance issues, while four songs taped after the actual show have been inserted. Sony BMG Meat Loaf - Hits Out Of Hell (1984)
Though <I>Hits out of Hell</I> shares the title of Meat Loaf's 1984 greatest hits album, the tracklisting is not quite the same: curiously, the DVD omits Dead Ringer for Love, Midnight at the Lost and Found and All Revved Up with No Place to Go, but includes, perhaps by way of compensation, More Than You Deserve and If You Really Want To. Such considerations are, of course, of only superficial importance: once producer and songwriter Jim Steinman had patented the Meat Loaf template on 1977's 30-million-selling <I>Bat Out of Hell</I>--an engagingly preposterous synthesis of Springsteen's <I>Born to Run</I>, Spector's <I>Be My Baby</I>, Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries, <I>Led Zeppelin IV</I> and the Broadway musical--he didn't tinker much with the formula. The video clips that accompany the songs tend either to be workmanlike live performances or complicated mini-operas--the latter have not dated tremendously well.<p> <B>On the DVD:</B> This DVD offers a choice of Dolby Surround Sound or PCM Stereo, and has a refreshingly simple and easy to navigate menu offering instant access to different tracks. Sony BMG Rage Against The Machine - Live At The Olympic Auditorium
This imaginatively titled release contains both footage of Rage Against the Machine in concert and uncensored versions of six of the group's videos. This isn't quite the value for money it might sound, since most of their videos are heavily reliant on concert footage anyway, and in a couple of cases it's difficult to tell one from the other. <p> That said, the concert footage, taken from a few different RATM shows, is crisply shot and conveys enough of RATM's intoxicating (if one-dimensional) ferocity to be effective. A couple of the videos are also worth seeing, if only because they wouldn't have much hope of getting played on television: the clip for Freedom, especially, is a clever and acute retelling of the story of American Indian Movement activist Leonard Peltier, shortly to complete his third decade of imprisonment. <p> <B>On the DVD:</B> <I>Rage Against the Machine</I> on disc has a choice of stereo sound or Dolby Digital 5.1. English subtitles are available on most tracks. Special features include a track selector, contacts for organisations with which RATM are sympathetic, and a book list largely comprising indigestible polemical tracts of the sort often bought, but rarely read, by the earnest students who constitute Rage Against the Machine's core audience. However, given that most bands use any spare capacity on their DVDs to flog T-shirts, RATM deserve credit for trying something different. --<I>Andrew Mueller</I>
