The dream-team combination of Plácido Domingo in the pit with Franco Zeffirelli as set-designer and director pays handsome dividends in this compelling live recording of <I>La Traviata</I>. The 2002 staging is from the intimate Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in the composer's home town of Busseto, a theatre in which promising young performers and players are often given a chance to work with more established artists. But judging from the clear, fresh voices and impressively mature stagecraft skills of both Stefania Bonfadelli and the handsome Scott Piper, they won't need a helping hand for much longer. Piper in particular has a wonderfully full, ringing tone and--heaven be praised!--a sensitive, intelligent <I>pianissimo</I>. Using period costumes, a minimum of props and a few sliding Perspex panels, Zeffirelli creates a handsome, small-scale production and as a director rarely puts a foot wrong--although simply by looking you wouldn't exactly be able to guess how Violetta earns her living. The young orchestra's inexperience shows through occasionally, but Domingo's sensitive accompanying skills (after all, Alfredo is a role he has sung many times himself) compensate for this. <p> <B>On the DVD:</B> <I>La Traviata</I> is presented in 16:9 ratio, with LPCM Stereo, AC3 Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 sound options. The picture quality is clear without being lustrous, but the small-scale staging never feels too cramped. There is a documentary about the making of the production and the relevance of the town of Busseto in Verdi's life. <I>Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers</I> are captured at a joyful outdoor gig at the Umbria Jazz Festival on July 20 during the scorching summer of 1976. Here, in his third decade of leading the band, Blakey's enthusiasm runs high throughout a set lasting almost exactly an hour across six compelling numbers. The opening Backgammon is a 13-minute showcase for Blakey's masterful drumming and virtuoso improvisation from trumpeter Bill Hardman, with especially fine contributions from pianist Mickey Tucker. There are strong exchanges between Cameron Brown's bass and Tucker's keys on Along Came Betty and, while the ten-minute workout that is Uranus may be the most exploratory cut, the almost equally lengthy Blues March keeps up the tempo. Tucker is again the star of the classic All the Things You Are, before the set reaches an uplifting conclusion with the breathtakingly interlocking dynamics of Gipsy Folk Tales. <p> This may not be one of the classic Messengers line-ups, but there's no doubting the commitment and dazzling precision of the musicianship. Likewise the rapt audience and romantic courtyard setting lend a magic which only happens when all the right elements come together, as they undoubtedly do in this highly enjoyable set. <p> <B>On the DVD:</B> <I>Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers</I> on disc has trailers for other TDK jazz releases and a text biography of Art Blakey. The 4:3 picture is sometimes slightly soft and displays the usual faults of live concert footage shot on video, but is generally much better than expected for its age. The sound defaults to good stereo but the Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 remixes add considerably to the sense of a occasion. Bellini's <I>Norma</I>, first performed in 1831, is one of the most glittering jewels in the <I>bel canto</I> repertoire, placing huge vocal demands on the soprano in the title role. The druid priestess who falls prey to human frail ties before redeeming her grace in the flames of the sacrificial fire must also be played with a high degree of dramatic truth. In the 20th century, two singers scaled new heights in combining these requirements: Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland. <p> Sutherland's great achievement, preserved in this 1978 recording of Opera Australia's production at Sidney Opera House, was to render Norma a very human being, unravelling her complex reactions to the events which bring her personal world tumbling down around her. Using Bellini's deceptively simple melodies to tender effect, she reveals the essential purity of many of his greatest arias, not least Casta diva: an equally valid alternative to Callas' pyrotechnics. Ronald Stevens as Norma's errant Roman lover Pollione and Margreta Elkins as Adalgisa, the unwitting agent of the priestess's ultimate downfall, strike vocal sparks in their duets with Sutherland. But this is essentially a treasurable record of one of the all-time great divas in a role that brought her some of her finest notices, with her husband and long-time collaborator Richard Bonynge in the conductor's box. <p> <B>On the DVD</B>: In all respects, this is a solid offering with few frills. The only extra is an Arthaus trailer. The 4:3 picture format and PCM stereo-sound quality are adequate media for a theatrical performance which is very much of its time: crudely-edited plot explanations separate the acts and there is the imposition of some rather naff stills of the ill-fated lovers on flickering flames to suggest the pyre. The celebrated Claudio Abbado conducts the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in performances of Beethoven's Third and Ninth Symphonies. No. 9 comes first, in a performance given in the Berlin Philharmonie hall for the year 2000 Europe Concert; the finale of Beethoven's masterpiece having been coopted as the anthem of the European Union, this tenth annual concert emphasised unification in an international broadcast seen by millions worldwide. Abbado is as qualified to conduct this music as anyone alive and brings a deeply sympathetic reading from the BPO, eliciting a particularly spirited and uplifting second movement <I>Molto vivace</I> and eloquently moving <I>Adagio</I>. <p>The epic choral finale features the combined forces of the Swedish Radio Choir and Eric Ericson Chamber Choir together with top international soloists, including the soprano Karita Mattila. The result is exhilarating, rapturous music-making which is never overwhelming but which truly captures the joy of Schiller's text. <p> Recorded in February 2001 at the National Academy of St. Cecilia in Rome, a fine performance of Beethoven's Third Symphony, Eroica completes the programme. The two venues ensure some visual contrast in both pieces, with Abbado a compelling figure to watch as he delivers this incomparable music. <p> <B>On the DVD:</B> <I>Beethoven Symphonies 3 amp; 9</I> is presented anamorphically enhanced at 16:9 ratio with a strong, clear picture and sound options covering PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1. The last of these is the best, the surround speakers being used subtly to give a real sense of live concert-hall ambience and an enveloping spread of the choirs in the Ninth. Other than a reasonably informative booklet the only significant extra is a multi-angle option for No. 3. With this selected the camera remains on Abbado throughout, offering a useful orchestra's eye view for musicians and conducting students.
