Chopin - Piano Music
A collection of pieces from the early works of Frederyk Chopin which highlight both the brilliance of his innovation as a composer and the new possibilities of emotional subtlety that he created for the instrument. O'Reilly CGI Programming with Perl
The appearance of the second edition of CGI Programming with Perl heralds the beginning of the neoclassical era of Web service. CGI--or common gateway interface--is the original back end for client-driven, dynamic Web-page service and deserves consideration as the Romulus of the Internet Empire. But, where first-edition author Gundavaram described the lonely Romulus laying the brick foundation of dynamic Web-page service in 1996, second-edition collaborators Guelich and Birznieks have pitched in to resurrect Romulus amid the crowded streets of modern Rome. Why bother? Surely four years have brought technological revolutions (Java, PHP, ASP, ColdFusion) that render CGI's original brick-by-brick approach as obsolete as, say, Roman mythology--or bricks and mortar.
And yet not. It is an ambiguous blessing that the original CGI persists, adhering to the underside of Web service by the duct tape that is Perl. This point is not missed by Guelich, Gundavaram, and Birznieks, whose advocacy of CGI is both bolstered by the growing applications module base of Perl and tempered by their awareness of CGI's structural limitations. Both new and returning readers of CGI Programming with Perl should browse the last chapter first in order to appreciate the proposed solutions to CGI's greatest sin: its impractical slowness in a world of a million-hits-per-day Web service. The chapter describes CGI-compatible FastCGI and mod_perl technologies that circumvent the process-spawning slowness of the simple CGI. Advanced users might want to skip directly to O'Reilly's fine mod_perl tome, Writing Apache Modules with Perl and C, by Lincoln Stein and Doug MacEachern.
The authors' second pass at CGI pedagogy is a lucid, honest, and expanded account that develops functionality of dynamic Web pages in a rational progression--from HTML client-server and CGI syntax basics to general input/output, forms, e-mail, graphics, and simple database applications, including maintaining client state and data persistence under the otherwise stateless HTTP protocol. The authors offer synopses of cookies, JavaScripting, server security, and XML, all of which are described in detail in other books.
Whether or not neoclassical CGI is fast enough for your purposes--perhaps for guarded intranets--bear in mind that CGI is the standard to which every other Web server has had to respond. The second edition of CGI Programming with Perl is still the best introduction to the classics. --Peter Leopold, Amazon.com

O'Reilly Perl in a Nutshell
The latest edition to the O'Reilly range of Perl manuals proves once again the mastery the company have when it comes to producing professional reference material.
As part of their desktop reference series, Perl in a Nutshell is everything programmers have come to expect: clear, concise and no-nonsense information on the subjects which matter.
Reminiscent of the Perl man pages, the book covers a wide variety of topics from a brief (yet useful) introduction to the language through a breakdown of the standard modules, to facilities including Tcl, Sockets programming, the LWP libs and even the Win32 interface.
Supported by a heavy duty index which makes finding the right piece of information a breeze, this 650-page tome is bound to see some serious action from any Perl programmer with a busy work schedule.
The fact that it bills itself as a quick reference goes some way to showing that Perl In A Nutshell is not a compact beginners guide--if you want one of those try O'Reilly's Learning Perl. However, for the workaday programmer who needs an elbow-side reference manual or the occasional coder looking for a memory jogger, this book is worth it's weight in gold.

O'Reilly Learning Perl
When it comes to working a little behind the scenes magic for a Web site or putting together a UNIX script which interrogate databases and produce reports based on the information they contain, there are few better languages to do the job than Perl.
Learning Perl draws on the expertise of two of the major supporters of this highly flexible language, Randal Schwatrz and Tom Christiansen, to produce an introductory manual which manages to be concise yet informative throughout.
Weighing in at a mere (for a computer manual) 271 pages it achieves admirably what it sets out to do--teach Perl basics and no more. From the introduction to the different variable types through hash arrays, file access, process management and coding for the World Wide Web, it's a well-paced easy-to-understand book which assumes a rudimentary knowledge of programming but no more.
With its multitude of clear examples which help to hammer home the many points made and set exercises at the end of each chapter, it builds knowledge rather than drowning the reader with information as many other books seem to do.
This is the first in a series of books on the subject from O'Reilly Publishing, the others being Programming Perl, Advanced Perl Programming and the Perl Cookbook and it truly is a great introduction to a language which is enthusiastically supported by developers and Web coders worldwide. Well worth a read.

O'Reilly Programming Perl
Larry Wall wrote Perl and he wrote Programming Perl. Better yet, he writes amusingly and well--all of which comes across in this latest edition of the definitive guide to the language.
Like Topsy, Perl just grew, and as a result so has Programming Perl. It's now over 1,000 pages but needs to be as it does several different jobs. Firstly, it's an introduction to the Perl language for those new to programming. It's a guide for those coming from other languages and it's a Perl language reference.
Larry Wall is a linguist, among his other interests, and perhaps for this reason Perl is a peculiarly flexible language with many routes to achieving the same ends, as the authors ably demonstrate. It's also extensible in several ways, designed to work with many other languages and, as it's largely interpreted, Perl programs tend to run unmodified on a variety of platforms--though platform-specific Perl modules and programming practices are also discussed.
A major strength of Programming Perl is the way subject areas are approached from several directions. This constant viewpoint-shifting eliminates blind spots in the reader's understanding as well as providing a pleasing echo of the way Perl itself can take many routes from here to there.
Because the Perl community is both knowledgeable and active the language covers a lot more ground than it did at the time the last edition of Programming Perl was published. Even if you have both previous editions you'll want this latest version--if only for the new jokes. --Steve Patient

Manning Object Oriented Perl
Perl has always been a powerful and popular programming language but with its new object capabilities, it can do even more. Written for anyone with a little Perl experience, Damian Conway's Object Oriented Perl provides a truly invaluable guide to virtually every aspect of object-oriented programming in Perl.
The most notable thing about Object Oriented Perl is the author's excellent perspective on object- oriented concepts and how they are implemented in Perl. This book does a remarkable job at cutting through traditional jargon and illustrating how basic object- oriented design techniques are handled in Perl. (A useful appendix attests to the author's wide-ranging knowledge, with a comparison of Smalltalk, Eiffel, C++, Java with Perl, including a summary of object-oriented syntax for each). This book also features a truly excellent review of basic Perl syntax.
Throughout this text, the author shows you the basics of solid object design (illustrated using classes that model music CDs). Basic concepts like inheritance and polymorphism get thorough and clear coverage. The author points out common mistakes and provides many tips for navigating the powerful and flexible (yet sometimes tricky) nuances of using Perl objects. For instance, he shows how to achieve true data encapsulation in Perl (which generally allows calls across modules) as well as its natural support for generic programming techniques.
The author also pays good attention to popular object modules available from CPAN (like Class::MethodmakerK&l t;/I>, which simplifies declaring classes). He also discusses performance issues and the trade-off between programming convenience and speed often faced by today's Perl developer. Advanced chapters cover a number of techniques for adding persistence and invoking methods using multiple dispatching.
Filled with syntactic tips and tricks, Object Oriented Perl is a sure bet for any programmer who wants to learn how to use Perl objects effectively. --Richard Dragan
Topics covered: Perl language review, CPAN, Perl objects, blessing and inheritance, polymorphism, Class: Struct and Class: Method maker modules, Perl ties and closures, operator overloading, encapsulation, multiple dispatch, Class: Multimethods, coarse-grained and fine-grained object persistence techniques, performance issues.

Addison Wesley Network Programming with Perl
Network programming--the term had a distinct meaning once, but now it begs the question, Is there another kind? That's why Lincoln Stein's Network Programming with Perl is valuable. It shows how one of the world's top Perl authorities brings the language to bear on problems that require communication among computers, showing that you may not have to resort to Java as soon as you may have thought to meet a networking requirement. What's more, Stein doesn't assume you have a lot of Perl expertise. An intermediate-level familiarity with the language should enable you to understand the examples in the book and follow the commentary: the classic code-and-commentary structure.
Stein presents full, working scripts, calling attention to particularly interesting lines and passages by repeating them in the text. If a program makes use of an unusual or previously undiscussed function (and lots of them do, because one of the author's missions is to introduce the contents of specialised libraries), its syntax and legal parameters will be documented and a concise statement of its behaviour provided. The example programs are the best part of this book, though. As the problems get more complicated, it's fun to watch Stein solve them with efficient, attractive code. Unless you're a really experienced professional, you'll be able to study the examples in this book and learn a lot.
Topics covered:

Perl function libraries and techniques that allow programs to interact with resources over a network
IO::Socket library
Net::FTP library
Net::Telnet library
Net::SMTP library
Chat problems
Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) issues
Markup-language parsing
Internet Protocol (IP) broadcasting and multicasting
--David Wall

Addison Wesley Effective Perl Programming: 60 Methods and Rules for Scripting Better Programs (A-W Developers Press S.)
Effective Perl Programming is a gem of a Perl book. Its author, Joseph Hall, is a well-known Perl instructor and frequent poster on the seminal comp.lang.perl.misc newsgroup. The book's technical editor is none other than Randal Schwartz, noted Net personality and enigmatic author of Learning Perl.
Hall has distilled his years of Perl experience into a book for Perl programmers that is both fluid and fun to read. It's somewhat like reading the Perl FAQ; even when you think you know everything, there's so much you don't know.
Effective Perl Programming has a clear layout: the text is easy on the eyes and the mono-spaced font makes a clear distinction between backticks and single quotes. Hall uses his PEGS (Perl Graphical Structures) notation to show the difference between Perl's different types of data structures and how everything ties together.
Packed with great examples and code snippets, this book is an excellent source of tips and tricks to make your Perl programs faster and easier to read. You'll also find a strong section on using the Perl debugger to improve your Perl programming skills. In yet another section, Hall walks the reader through the creation of a complete XS module that can boost the performance of array shuffling eight-fold. All in all, this is a great book for programmers who want to move beyond plain, verbose Perl toward a more succinct and powerful coding style. --Jake Bond

O'Reilly Perl for System Administration
Perl's cross-platform compatibility is less of an advantage to sysadmins than you might think. Most useful Perl programs need to access files and file access conventions are quite different across Unix/Windows/Mac platforms. The author deals with such issues early along with the oddities of installing Perl on different platforms and the need for sysadmins to write clean, robust and secure programs. Recent Net exploits underline the last point.
The content is, though, far from theoretical. One of the first script examples shows how to recursively walk a file tree using Perl alone and then an even better way using Perl's File:Find module. Having created a filewalking script, Blank-Edelman then explains the various platform gotchas you need to consider when filewalking on different platforms because of differences in the way each file system works.
This relentless attention to the underpinnings of different operating systems is the real strength of Blank-Edelman's book. He writes as someone who not only does this stuff every day but likes getting his hands dirty, and--unlike the famous fictional sysadmin, BOFH--enjoys explaining how it all works.
His approach is especially valuable when dealing with the complexities of database management, e-mail and security. For example, in the latter section, to locate a misbehaving user, the author uses Perl to interrogate a Cisco Catalyst 5500 switch though the story following - a strange but amusing partial routing failure - hammers home Perl's flexibility and development speed.
Blank-Edelman assumes you already know Perl, but once you've read Perl for System Administrators you'll know enough about the glistening innards of network OSs to use it reliably and securely for network admininstration. It helps that it's also a great read. --Steve Patient

O'Reilly Mastering Algorithms with Perl
Written for readers with at least some Perl programming experience, Mastering Algorithms in Perl delivers a solid library of algorithms written in Perl for business and mathematical computing. From data structures to cryptography and more advanced mathematical algorithms, this book provides a worthwhile guide to extending Perl's coding capabilities.
The best thing about Master Algorithms in Perl is the scope with which it covers the universe of algorithms, while refraining from getting bogged down in academic detail. Besides providing basic data structures (a lynchpin of books on algorithms), the authors provide dozens of algorithms for sorting, searching and doing mathematical computation of all kinds. While they discuss Big-O notation and assume a general familiarity with math, they don't overwhelm the reader. (You can even borrow the code here without a math degree to understand it.) The focus here is on efficient, re-usable Perl subroutines written and compiled by three Perl experts.
Standout chapters include extending Perl's already powerful string processing abilities, game programming and cryptography. Generally, the authors achieve a good mix of advanced and less well-known algorithms, along with the basics. Chances are you won't need to use all the dozen or so sorting algorithms presented here, but the authors include them all, just in case. As a reference and tutorial, readers can pick and choose what they need for real world Perl development.
There hasn't been a book dedicated exclusively to Perl algorithms prior to the publication of this one. In all, Mastering Algorithms in Perl fills a useful niche by compiling a powerful library of Perl algorithms that will be useful for anyone who works with this programming language, whether in business or academic computing. - -Richard Dragan,Amazon.com< ;p> Topics covered: Perl data types, Big-O notation, data structures, queues, deques, linked lists, binary trees, sorting and searching algorithms, game and dynamic programming, sets and multisets, matrices, graphs, string matching and parsing, 2-D geometry, number systems, cryptography (including DES and RSA), probability, statistics and numerical analysis. --Amazon.com ;
