Que SQL Server 2000 Programming by Example (By Example S.)
Ideal for the database programmer or system DBA, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Programming by Example is an excellent example-based tutorial on mastering today's SQL features. Packed with plenty of tips and tricks, this title will let almost anyone do more with SQL Server.
While there are plenty of screen shots showing graphical SQL Server tools, the focus of this book is clearly on learning real command-line Transact-SQL (T-SQL). The authors provide a patient and very thorough tour of T-SQL with full coverage of both basic and advanced features. You'll learn how to define new tables, manage users in groups, as well as perform all kinds of queries. Stand-out material includes an excellent guide to SQL data types and how to choose the right one for your needs. When it comes to queries, the book does a great job of exploring all your options for joining relational data, as well as grouping data for more advanced reporting. True to its title, Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Programming by Example is filled with dozens of examples of SQL commands (and the results) so that you can try out this material for yourself and really learn the language thoroughly.
Later on, the authors turn toward server-side programming with a digestible guide to creating stored procedures and triggers. The book closes with an in-depth guide to the issues regarding cursors (for working with table data), transactions and locking. Sections on bulk copy tools and the Microsoft Data Transformation Services (DTS) show how to move data around the enterprise. A final section of distributed queries and linked servers will help you work with different sources of data wherever it resides in your organisation.
Despite some stilted writing, the comprehensive examples in this book make it a success. It will let anyone start using basic T-SQL for the first time, as well as teach more advanced readers to master the finer points of Microsoft databases. --Richard Dragan

Hungry Minds Inc,U.S. Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming
When it comes to selecting computer books, deciding which book to buy can sometimes be even more confusing than the software it is written about. However, if you are looking for a book to instruct you on the use of SQL Server 2000, choosing this book, Professional SQL Server 2000 Programming, could well simplify your selection process.
In addition to providing a thorough treatment of SQL Server 2000 development, Robert Vieira's extensive reference also devotes quite a lot of space to covering SQL in general and issues relating to database design. Included is a complete introduction to Transact-SQL and an excellent chapter on normalisation that will go a long way for many to de-mystify the mystery of an over-referenced but much misunderstood database design concept. There is also in-depth information on the new features of SQL Server 2000, including indexed views, user-defined functions and support of XML. Sadly, there is no accompanying CD, but source code for the book can be downloaded from the Wrox Web site.
While you don't need any knowledge of SQL Server or database administration to make the most of this book, you will need a reasonable understanding of programming fundamentals. That said, the author's down-to-earth style makes it possible for anyone with some programming background and the will to learn, to really get to grips with SQL Server 2000 development. If you are looking for a book that combines rich content with clear explanation, then look no further than this excellent title. --Peter Lunn

Apress Beginning Sql Server 2000 Programming
Aimed at those starting out with SQL Server databases as programmers or administrators, Beginning SQL Server 2000 Programming can put basic database skills into reach for readers of all levels. Packed with screenshots of how to use the relevant SQL Server tools and wizards, this book sets a high standard for accessibility for a tutorial text on Microsoft databases.
Most titles use screenshots to at least guide readers through installation of computer software and then turn to a more text-based presentation style later on. Not so with this text, which has several hundred screenshots used throughout showing SQL Server tools in action. After covering how to install and configure SQL Server (a trial edition is including on the accompanying CD), the author continues to show off tools like Enterprise Manager and Query Analyzer at work with plenty of step-by-step, hands-on tutorials with plentiful screenshots.
This book walks you through designing and creating a simple database (one that stores results for a golf league). In most every case, the author shows off using a tool alongside a more manual approach using SQL to get the job done. (For example, there's step-by-step coverage of how to create tables and indexes using Enterprise Manager, as well as how to do the same tasks using raw SQL in Query Analyzer.) Along the way, there is a solid tutorial to basic SQL for querying, inserting, updating, and deleting data, plus a good introduction to stored procedures and triggers. The strong sections on backing up and restoring databases are all you need to get started with basic database administration in SQL Server. Besides nuts-and-bolts DBA tasks, this book also offers a quick introduction to XML support available on the Microsoft database platform. The text closes with a handy listing of all T-SQL keywords, plus a guide to security options and settings available in SQL Server.
In all, this hands-on guide to database essentials can let you start effectively administering and programming with SQL Server regardless of your level of database experience. --Richard Dragan
