Hungry Minds Inc,U.S. Flash 5 Bible
Flash 5 Bible is a near-essential handbook for Web designers getting to grips with Macromedia's stunning multimedia authoring tool. Macromedia's manuals are terse, and Flash is not the easiest of products to learn, so this detailed and professional guide is particularly welcome. With over 1200 pages, it covers every aspect from the basics through to advanced ActionScript programming. A great feature is the inclusion of over 40 Expert Tutorials, step-by-step guides to advanced topics, each written by a specialist in that area. If you want to know how to make lip-synching cartoons or to connect Flash to a WebCam using Macromedia Generator, the server-side tool for creating dynamic Flash content, then here is the place to find out.
Newcomers to Flash will appreciate the quick-start overview, Flash in a Flash, and the early chapters which teach use of the Flash environment, how the Timeline works and the fundamentals of drawing and animation. There is good coverage for sound as well as graphics, and a full explanation of how to build interactive movies with actions and event handlers. Six chapters deal with ActionScript development, including Flash forms and data processing using XML. There is also a long section on using Flash with other software, covering bitmap, vector and 3-D graphics, audio applications, QuickTime, RealPlayer and more. Finally, the authors show how to publish Flash movies and integrate them into HTML pages.
Whether you are a seasoned Flash professional exploring new features, or a beginner perplexed by the manuals, Flash 5 Bible is an invaluable resource. --Tim Anderson

Hungry Minds Inc,U.S. Flash 5 Cartooning
Finally someone has written a book on animating in Flash. It's a wonder there aren't more like it. Flash 5 Cartooning covers the cartoon production cycle from a Flash artist's standpoint--drawing, writing, storyboarding, animating and keyframes. Sounds like a book on traditional animation, doesn't it? But everything is examined from a Flash perspective. When the book talks about drawing, it means drawing with a tablet. On keyframes and in-betweens, it is within Flash and not on paper that these issues are covered.
The book has two outstanding features: one, it's about making cartoons, not Flash. It just so happens that the tool of choice is Flash and the mode of distribution is the Web. Topics such as scripting (writing a cartoon story, not computer scripting), storyboarding, layout, camera moves and basic animation technique are well covered, as well as the Flash interface, how Flash works, how to compress media for faster downloading, basic HTML and other Flash and Web-specific topics.
The second great feature is the CD-ROM, which includes samples and material used in the chapters but above all contains a digital version of the book--not a stripped-down, bare-bones text version, but a full-colour, searchable version. Having a book like this at one's fingertips raises its usability rating through the roof.
Written in a clear, concise and light-hearted voice, the book spans 15 chapters. Every page has a handful of screen shots, and every page is in full colour. There were no shortcuts taken in either content or production value.
It's remarkable that there aren't more books like this. Sure, Flash is a great tool for all kinds of dynamic graphics and interactivity, but the Flash cartoon sites get a disproportionately high number of hits. Flash cartoons download fast, are often wonderfully creative and in most cases carry a strong sense of the artist who created them. This is what Flash and the Web have created--a venue for independent animators. Maybe cartoons still aren't taken seriously and that's why so little has been published on the topic; regardless, Flash 5 Cartooning excels in its class, not because the genre is such a niche, but because it is a terrific book. --Mike Caputo

Sams Teach Yourself Macromedia Flash 5 in 24 Hours (Sams Teach Yourself S.)
Flash 5, the application from Macromedia for creating animation for the Web, is deceptively simple at first yet has great depth and flexibility. Teach Yourself Flash 5 in 24 Hours from Sams Publishing is an ideal introduction to this package, offering an overview of the entire package without being overwhelming.
Built around four main sections, we start out learning the basics by using the native painting and drawing tools, importing prepared material, and using Flash Libraries for reusing material. During these early chapters, readers are introduced to the tools, palettes, windows and features of Flash 5.
Screensho ts appear on every page and each step and description is clear even to the novice. Some pages also feature sidebars offering tips, ideas and explanations of the task at hand. These are generally one paragraph or so, but often shed light on a difficult concept. After focusing on animation and different ways of animating objects, the book opens the doors to interactivity, where you start using interactive features, creating animated buttons and using Actions to create non-linear movies.
Although designed for the beginner, the book touches on some of the more advanced concepts of Flash in the last few chapters. Using Flash in a team environment, optimising a Flash site to get the most out of the medium, and exploring advanced animation concepts like anticipation, exaggeration and simulating depth are introduced, although none of these sections get too involved. It's more of a way to introduce the designer to what is possible, and suggest avenues for further study.
A favourite feature of the Teach Yourself books is the summary, Q&A and Workshop sections that are at the end of each hour (chapter). The summary reinforces everything that was covered, the Q&A section addresses about a half-dozen of the most commonly asked questions on the material, and the Workshop is generally a quiz or short assignment designed to make use of the features or techniques that were just learned. These chapter features make this an excellent course book.
Flash 5 offers the Web-based animator a large array of features, and Teach Yourself Flash 5 in 24 Hours is an excellent introduction to most of them. --Mike Caputo

Que Macromedia Flash 5 ActionScript Fun and Games
Macromedia Flash 5 Actionscript for Fun & Games. The title says it all really. Gary Rosenzweig's book is entirely devoted to showing you how to program games in ActionScript.
It kicks off with a few chapters devoted to Actionscript features that are of general interest to games programmers. For those with limited ActionScript experience, this is a good place to start, although some prior experience of Flash is recommended as Rosenzweig sets a hot pace and by page 37 you're writing your first ActionScript program.
Having dealt with the tools required for interactive games programming, the rest of the book is almost entirely given over to hands-on example-based lessons. Starting with toys and gadgets like a music jukebox and analogue clock, Rosenzweig shows you how to program virtually every kind of game conceivable. Chapters are devoted to construction toys, hunt and click games, catch and avoid games, aim and shoot games, ball and paddle games, quizzes and word puzzles, picture puzzles, brain puzzles, casino and card games and arcade games.
All of the program examples are available online, so you can not only use the techniques in the book to write new code, but are actively encouraged to adapt the examples to your own needs.
Even if games are not your ultimate goal, you'll learn a lot about interactive ActionScript from these pages. Gary Rosenzweig wrote five books on Macromedia Director, runs four games Web sites and knows his stuff when it comes to Actionscript. You can see examples of his games at www.clevermedia.com --Ken McMahon

Coriolis Group,U.S. Flash 5 Cartoons and Games Fx and Design
There was a time when making an animated film meant, at the very least, a huge investment in time and equipment. Flash 5 Cartoons and Games demonstrates how things have changed, teaching a new generation of animators that all you really need is an ordinary PC or Mac and Macromedia's Flash authoring program.
Diverse and powerful, Flash can be used to create Web sites and multimedia presentations. Animation is an art in itself, and the book approaches the use of Flash from an animator's and game designer's perspective. Eleven chapters describe a production workflow, from early story development to using Flash to create a storyboard, adding sound, creating elements and movement, and creating backgrounds.
There are a number of outstanding features to this book: for one it doesn't focus on the technology. There is as much information on using Flash as there is in composing a scene, using colour and sound to evoke a mood, and using quick sketches for storyboard timing. Also, there is a strong emphasis on character animation. Chapter 5 is, in fact, called Character Animation, followed by chapter 6, Lip Syncing and Facial Expressions. These sections and others throughout the book show how to use Flash features like reusable symbols and libraries to create believable characters.
A little more than half the book focuses on animation. The second half covers game design, programming and animation, with an emphasis on trivia and adventure games. You'll need to know a bit about Web scripting and how Flash scripting works to get the most out of the material.
The CD-ROM includes a wide variety of examples, including runtime files (*.swf) and the authoring files used to create them. This provides the beginner with an opportunity to see the finished product as well as look behind the curtain to see what makes it tick.
Beyond the golden age of cartoons (1930s to mid-40s), it's hard to think of a better time in history to be an animator than right now. Not only are the tools to create entire films easily accessible, but reaching a global audience is a breeze, thanks to the Web and technologies such as Quicktime and Flash. Flash 5 Cartoons and Games can show you how to harness these tools and take advantage of the new medium. --Mike Caputo

friends of ED Foundation Flash 5 (Designer to Designer)
This new addition to the growing library of Flash instruction books gives readers a solid base in this popular and increasingly necessary Web development application. The book promises a foundation that is accessible, meaning you won't be daunted by ActionScripting or any of the other topics, and extensible, meaning you will find it easy to add to your knowledge after you've finished the book.
Foundat ion Flash 5 successfully avoids the trap, so common in other instruction books, of an all-encompassing but shallow overview. It successfully does an in-depth treatment of the most essential aspects of using Flash. At the end, you may not know every menu option, but you'll be able to construct your own Flash Web site. The book uses one case study project: a Web site interface with animated buttons, soundtrack and Flash -enabled content. Small-scale lessons within chapters and applying these lessons to the larger scale project help reinforce the material. (Support files for the case study can be downloaded from www.friendsofed.com)
T he writing follows a narrative style (longer paragraphs both before and within the numbered steps), managing to be casual and friendly in just the right amounts. Personal anecdotes, when they occur, actually enhance the lessons. Although this style makes hopping around the book and troubleshooting specific problems more difficult, the payoff for reading in a linear, cumulative fashion is a better handle on the pros and cons of Flash's core features. Another plus is that readers can follow along even if they are not sitting at the computer. (Learn Flash on the bus! Why not?) Throughout the book, the authors often point out alternative methods and uses for features, which encourages creative thinking on how to apply the lessons to your own projects. First-time users of Flash as well as experienced users who have put off trying scripting will find this book a good place to start. --Angelynn Grant
