Sophie's Choice/ On Golden Pond
Two films. Sophie's Choice - Meryl Streep won a well-deserved Oscar as a Polish immigrant trying to make a fresh start in America after the horrors of WW2. At first it seems that her dilemma is between her erratic lover Nathan and her naive friend Stingo, the film's narrator, but eventually a plunge into the monochrome world of Auschwitz reveals the true nature of Sophie's impossible choice. A haunting and moving film. On Golden Pond - Three generations of the Thayer family gather at their New England summer home, but head-on conflicts set generation against generation. Hepburn won an Oscar as did Henry Fonda in his final role, as the ageing parents desperately trying to hold their crumbling family together. Jane Fonda was nominated. A surprise smash hit, bringing a few old-fashioned values and a lot of warmth to sophisticated Eighties audiences.
