Weidenfeld & Nicolson Mouse or Rat?: Translation as Negotiation
Professor of semiotics, essayist and world-renowned novelist Umberto Eco's Mouse or Rat? Translation as Negotiation is based on a series of lectures on the art of translation. Strictly speaking this is a specialist book, of interest mainly to students and practitioners of translation and in that regard the book will probably become standard. While the book is accessible to the interested novice it would be a mistake to think that the essays produced here will have the broad appeal of his 2002 book of essays Five Moral Pieces. The general lesson here is that translation is negotiation between the translator, the reader and the original author, and how enormously difficult the translating process is. The professional translator must not only have an understanding of two languages, but of differences in culture and a keen attentiveness to the style, rhythm and tone of language if the overall texture and meaning of the text is to be preserved.
The book is effectively an instruction manual for translators and a personal record of Eco's own virtuoso translating performances. The solemn duty of the translator is to give every line, every last word loving devoted pious attention in order to recreate the unique voice of the original author. In short, translation is not only an exacting science but an art and the translator's heart must be motivated by what Eco calls faithfulness. The essays are littered with concrete examples offering practical guidance but at the same time they are full of Eco's philosophical and theoretical musings in relation to his subject. This is an indispensable text for those in the translation business, but the general reader may find it a dense and difficult, although a highly educative read. --Larry Brown

Secker & Warburg Baudolino
In Baudolino the ever ingenious Umberto Eco draws on the medieval legends surrounding Prester John--a mythical Christian emperor of the Far East--to create a sprawling, picaresque adventure yarn.
The eponymous Baudolino is the book's hero and chief, although deeply unreliable, narrator. After a brief foray into Baudolino's youthful attempts at autobiography, the novel opens in Constantinople in 1204, at the time of the Fourth Crusade. Baudolino has helped Niketas Choniates, the chancellor of the basileus of Byzantium, to flee the city. As the men make their way to safety Baudolino begins to recount, with numerous digressions and contradictions, his extraordinary life story. Born an Italian peasant, Baudolino claims to have been adopted as a boy by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. Sent to Paris to learn the art of saying well that which may or may not be true Baudolino fell in with a band of good fellows and fell in love with his stepmother. After being embroiled in the canonisation of Charlemagne; finding the sacred remains of the Magi and helping Frederick with a siege or two, Baudolino and chums, armed with the Holy Grail, set off on a particularly monster strewn journey to find the holy Prestor John. Teaming with Eco's customary metafictional games, intellectual jokes and elaborate (and even ludicrous) theological discussions, this novel is possibly his most accessible, and arguably enjoyable, since The Name of the Rose. --Travis Elborough

Merrell Publishers Ltd The Story of Time
The press has been sniffy about the way the National Maritime Museum has dumbed down its galleries during the recent refurbishment--but there's no sign of such a strategy in this handsome companion to its international exhibition on Time. A perfect antidote to millennial tosh, The Story of Time captures the diverse ways in which cultures experience, measure, and resist the passage of time. Visually rich, its images reproduced to a very high quality, nonetheless, if this book were just a catalogue, the reader's pleasure would soon pall. Consider, for example, the picture of a Babylonian baked clay tablet on which are recorded New Moons for the years 103 to 100 BC. What better icon of futility could there be than this table of numbers, endlessly iterated? There is little else as drab as this: the exhibits--comprising everything from paintings to astronomical instruments to textiles to maps and documents, from places and times far too numerous to list here--are a credit to the skills and imaginations of the curators. But all these things, by definition, deal with something that can only be experienced, never shown. On this point the book, interspersed throughout with short, eclectic articles on all kinds of subjects related to time, perception, decay--the list goes on--wields a major advantage over its parent exhibition. Particularly refreshing is Joy Hendry's short account of the eclectic approach to time taken in Japan. In common with other peoples in the region, the Japanese lack a notion of time as a continuing entity. Marked with events and periods but otherwise relatively homogenous, Japanese time is an agglomeration of local and overseas calendars and zodiacs--and not a clay tablet in sight. --Simon Ings
