<I>Frivolous Lola</I> is a spirited adult production that keeps very much to Italian director Tinto Brass' <I>modus operandi</I> of making light-hearted sex films with a European art house sensibility. The Lola of the title (played with gusto by Serena Grandi) is a flighty young woman, frustrated by her relationship with local baker's son Masetto. Her constant attempts to seduce him meet with little success, resulting in a passionate affair with her mother's lover, André. As with all of Brass' work, <I>Frivolous Lola</I> is an odd combination of European erotica and <I>Carry On</I> film--not helped by the clumsy English language dubbing and the somewhat bizarre appearance of Britain's own Patrick Mower. Aficionados of the director will also spot his primary fascination with a certain part of the female anatomy as Grandi's bottom dominates the shot at every possible opportunity. <p> <B>On the DVD:</B> <I>Frivolous Lola</I> on disc is digitally remastered, and the picture shows off the lushness of the Italian countryside, even though that was probably the last thing on the director's mind. Lola, confronted with one obstacle after another, rides an emotional roller coaster in her high-speed efforts to help the hapless Manni--attempting to extract the cash first from her double-dealing father (appropriately a bank manager), and then by any means necessary. From this point nothing goes right for either protagonist, but just when you think you've figured out the movie, the director introduces a series of brilliant existential twists that boggle the mind. Tykwer uses rapid camera movements and innovative pauses to explore the theme of cause and effect. Accompanied by a pulse-pounding soundtrack, we follow Lola through every turn and every heartbreak as she and Manni rush forward on a collision course with fate. Fortunately for Jacqueline Wilson fans, her new books seem to come along a lot more regularly than JK Rowling's do, and for this latest, fantastic bittersweet slice of life offering they should again be grateful. <I>Lola Rose</I> is typical Wilson--a story of normal family strife, situations and feelings bound together with extraordinarily uplifting solutions that leave the reader with a tear in their eye and a smile on their lips.<p><I>Lola Rose</I> is definitely one for her older readers, however. Jayni, her mum and little brother Kenny are forced to flee their family home when Jayni's dad starts hitting her too--as if it wasn't enough that he battered his wife about already. A desperate flight to London is made bearable when Jayni's mum wins £10,000 on a lottery scratch card and treats everybody to whatever they want. It's a chance to start again and have an adventure--and to forget. They even get to pick new names so that they can hide better. Jayni picks out Lola Rose--an exotic-sounding name she finds in one of the magazines she is so fond of cutting up and pasting into her scrapbooks. <p>But the lottery money doesn't last forever and Lola's mum finds it harder than she thought being away from her husband. However, it's definitely the start of something better for everyone despite a few hiccups along the way. <p>Jacqueline Wilson is a mega-star among children's authors. Her books are consistently unputdownable and <I>Lola Rose</I> exemplifies her skill at stirring the emotions in an unforgettable story that is sure to win her even more accolades.
