Orion mass market paperback The Marriage of Sticks
The easy way to describe Jonathan Carroll's novels is to call them indescribable. Since his strange debut The Land of Laughs (1980), he's developed his own special flavour of fantastic or magic-realist unease. The protagonists have wonderful and successful lives, glowingly described--this latest book stars a popular, high-living and attractive woman who loves her lucrative career as a rare book dealer. As always in Carroll, though, the glittering surface of Miranda's good life conceals a certain hollowness. Shocking booby-traps await her, stabs of horror and loss from unexpected directions. Small indicators of wrongness accumulate: a wheelchair-bound woman glimpsed in an impossible place on a Los Angeles superhighway, a dog set on fire, a hospice named Fieberglas misheard as Fever Glass. Dead men and unborn children seem to stalk Miranda. At one point she notices a scene from her tragically interrupted love affair showing on the giant screen of a deserted drive-in movie theatre. Neither Miranda nor the world are quite as she believes: but when she's been openly, nightmarishly condemned for being what she is, there is for once a slender chance of renunciation and redemption. The finale is enigmatic but oddly satisfying. You don't easily forget a Carroll book. --David Langford

Deutsche Grammophon Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) -- ParisGardiner (NTSC)
It is an oft-repeated saw, about life in the heavenly spheres, that the angels revere Bach but listen to Mozart. If they have DVD players, you can bet they're now watching this stunning production of Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), which comes about as close to Mozartian perfection as one could possibly hope to get. The faultlessly cast youthful performers bubble with infectious energy. Alison Hagley is a sprightly Susanna with a voice as clear as a bell, and brilliantly matched by a 28-year-old Bryn Terfel both acting and sounding in fine form. Hillevi Martinpelto demonstrates why she is one of the world's favourite Mozart singers with her melting tones, richly coloured voice and generous stage presence, and Rodney Gilfry gives a muscular, wonderfully controlled performance as the Count.
Olivier Mille's direction mixes knockabout comedy and restrained pathos with fluid inventiveness, and there are even--heavens, can this really be an opera?--quite a few belly laughs, and deliciously amusing details. (Susanna's guitar playing during Cherubino's Voi che sapete is a comic delight, and Figaro's hidden sneers at Count Almaviva are hilarious.) John Eliot Gardiner draws exquisite playing from his authentic-instrument orchestra and employs tempos that are ideal. Add to that gorgeous 18th-century costumes and effective sets--it doesn't get much better than this.
On the DVD: the production is beautifully realised for home viewing, with clear sound (the sets are simple wooden panels, which continually and flatteringly push the sound to the front) and great camera direction. There are subtitles in Italian, English, French, German, Spanish and Chinese but no other special features.--Warwick Thompson

Arthaus Musik Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) -- BerlinBarenboim [2000]
A massive success from its premiere on May 3, 1786, Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) downplays the social satire in Beaumarchais' original tale of romantic intrigue and revenge between the classes, instead emphasising the psychological dimensions. Here in a live production from the Staatsoper, Berlin, director Alexandre Tarta employs simple sets, focusing all attention on a very fine cast as they spin-out the farcical ironies. The result is one of the most acclaimed interpretations of recent years, with soprano Dorethea Röschmann reprising her star-making 1995 Salzburg debut as the sensual and flirtatious Susanna. Rene Papé makes a fine Figaro, and there are no weak links, with not just the singing but the performances uniformly excellent. The humour on show makes the sorrow all the more genuinely affecting. Of course Mozart's music is marvellous, packed with great arias and duets, and under Daniel Barenboim the State Opera Choir Berlin Staatskapelle Berlin are on splendid form.
On the DVD: With the opera lasting 190 minutes the only other feature on the disc is a plot synopsis. However, the subtitles can be switched on or off. The booklet also provides a synopsis, together with some background on the opera and the performers. Filming a live production with theatre lights is never going to result in the most detailed images, and under these circumstances the anamorphically enhanced picture fares well, being far superior to VHS. The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound is realistic, detailed and absorbing without ever being unnecessarily showy. --Gary S. Dalkin

Warner Music Vision Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) -- Glyndebourne [1994]
Mozart's immortal adaptation of Beaumarchais' satirical tale has always been a Glyndebourne staple, so it was appropriate that this delightfully traditional production of Le Nozze di Figaro was chosen to reopen a refurbished Gyndebourne in May, 1994. Here, John Gunter's set design is airy and uncluttered, leaving the actors plenty of breathing space, while director Stephen Medcalf likewise allows the characters to speak (and sing) for themselves. Gerald Finley's Figaro and Alison Hagley's Susanna make a charming central pairing; Renee Fleming and Andreas Schmidt are a formidable aristocratic duo, while Marie-Ange Todorovitch fills Cherubino's trousers with pleasing playfulness. Haitink and the London Philharmonic sparkle, as of course they should. Unfussily filmed, this is as close to the real thing as you are likely to get without a Glyndebourne season ticket.
On the DVD: This is a double-sided disc requiring a changeover between Acts 2 and 3. With a running-time of 189 minutes, the disc is no longer than some epic Hollywood movies, so such flipping is hard to justify. But at least opera lends itself to natural breaks like this. The sound options are Dolby stereo or 5.1 and the picture is in 4:3 ratio. Subtitles are provided in English, French or German and the booklet contains a plot synopsis. --Mark Walker

Tdk UK Ltd Mozart: Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) -- ZurichHarnoncourt
Conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt's approach to Le Nozze di Figaro is certainly historically informed, but both his musical direction and this Zurich Opera production as a whole lack a certain lightness of touch. In such a deliciously comic work it should be permissible to have fun. Harnoncourt's tempos seem rather too conservative; while the low stage lighting keeps the revolving sets shaded in half-shadow for much of the time. The result is a tad claustrophobic, both musically and visually.
There are many compensations, however. Though Harnoncourt may be a little over-cautious, what's lost in joie de vivre is gained in clarity and nuance. Similarly, the singers have plenty of space to enunciate and cherish every rolling phrase. Although Carlos Chausson makes an appealing everyman character as Figaro, he and everyone else must perform (sometimes literally) in Rodney Gilfry's domineering shadow. Gilfry's Alamaviva is a swaggering counterpart to his Don Giovanni, with the same almost overwhelming sexual presence and charisma; no wonder, then, that Eva Mei's Countess is so jealous, or that Isabel Rey's Susanna seems genuinely attracted despite her better judgment. The ensemble cast are uniformly delightful and, unusually, are all good actors: when the Count and Countess squabble, Gilfry and Mei really work themselves into a fine passion.
The set and costuming are both of indeterminate period: the Count carries a shotgun to shoot Liliana Nikiteanu's errant Cherubino, and there are deckchairs in the garden, but the ladies' costumes are cut to reveal authentically 18th-century heaving bosoms. In all, this is a Figaro distinguished by a strong cast and fine singing, but hampered a little by the staging. An airier alternative is the more traditional Glyndebourne production.
On the DVD: Le Nozze di Figaro from Zurich is presented in three vivid sound options: LPCM Stereo, Dolby 5.1 or DTS 5.1. Picture is 16:9. The subtitling is occasionally unnecessarily repetitive (Figaro's Piano, piano, piano takes up a big chunk of the screen as: Not so fast, not so fast, not so fast and so on) and inadequately proofread (Forgeive me...Falsce one [sic] ;). --Mark Walker

Weidenfeld & Nicolson The Marriage of Souls
Dr. Silas Grange, the junior of Lymington's two physicians has fallen prey to a mysterious illness connected, in some manner, with the sudden departure from the Hampshire town of the independent and philanthropic Mrs Quill. It's 1798--and Grange is an atheist, a democrat, prone to austerity (his housekeeper, Mrs Thompson is disgusted by his refusal to eat anything richer than fish broth) and the proponent of the new medical methods being taught in the Scottish universities. He is also deeply concerned about the working conditions in the salt furnaces that form the bulk of local industry. His senior colleague, Dr Hargood, favours extensive blood-letting, extensive feasting, high laissez-faire Toryism and the keeping of mistresses.
This is a deeply unusual and self-conscious rites-of-passage novel in which the main protagonist doesn't make a personal appearance until the last few of the 480-plus pages: Hargood had said of Mrs Quill's absence, It is like a novel, sir, which should leave some presence with you, some aftertaste, which shall remain widowed away in the soul. It's no accident that the story's set when it is, just after the French Revolution and just prior to the turning of the century--on the cusp of major social, political and economic changes.
The Marriage of Souls gets off to a slow start, but amply rewards the persistent reader with its measured considerations of the complex relations between men of opposing temperaments and belief systems, between men and women, between capitalism and philanthropy, between love and independence. --Lisa Gee
