Penguin Audiobooks Thank You, Jeeves
Much to the annoyance of his neighbours, Bertie Wooster has taken up the banjolele. In fact, the noise is so unpleasant that even Jeeves has deserted him, seeking employment with Bertie's friend Chuffy. Driven out of his apartment and accompanied by a new servant, Bertie retires to the country, where he is shocked to encounter a segment of the dead past--a number of people whom he would rather avoid. Chief among these is a certain Pauline Stoker, to whom Bertie once proposed marriage a fortnight after they met, but whose father (unsurprisingly) resisted the attachment.
Jeeves' change of employer does not prevent him from confiding in Bertie, and the two of them are soon plotting to foster a romance between Pauline Stoker and Chuffy. Left to his own devices, Bertie's plans soon come unstuck, but Jeeves (as ever) discretely saves the day. Highlights include Bertie's imprisonment on board a yacht and some nocturnal antics which fall foul of the long (and somewhat stupid) arm of the law. A few rather dubious scenes, which see Bertie blacking up to mingle with a group of minstrels, do not mar another wonderful tale of upper-class foolishness, brilliantly read by Simon Callow. --John Oates

Penguin Audiobooks Jeeves in the Offing
Written in 1960, Jeeves In The Offing finds PG Wodehouse's best-loved characters on as fine form as ever. With Jeeves on holiday, Bertie Wooster accepts an invitation to Brinkley Court, where he hopes to pass a few pleasant days. However, there is little time to relax when the visit turns out to involve Bertie's ex-headmaster, a former fiancée, an eccentric playboy, and a purloined cow-shaped creamer. Bertie struggles to master the situation, but soon enough he needs to call for the assistance of his butler.
The supremely competent Jeeves saves the day as usual, able to assess any situation in a moment and dispense the appropriate advice. He guides his employer safely through numerous trials, with a great deal of humour derived from the very triviality of the obstacles which must be overcome, as well as the comic ways in which the difficulties are resolved.
Simon Callow's reading captures the characters' nuances perfectly--the Butler's Very good, sir and Indeed, sir (for example) have just the right measure of professional respectfulness, studied disinterest, and a slightly superior air. As with the other cassettes in the Penguin series, Jeeves In The Offing provides a wonderful rendition of Wodehouse's expertly-crafted material. --John Oates

Penguin Audiobooks Very Good, Jeeves
Beginning with a mysterious message and a visit to the dreaded Aunt Agatha, Very Good, Jeeves once again sees Bertie Wooster beset by difficulties that can only be untangled by his faithful butler. Indeed, by the time of this entry in the Jeeves cycle, written in 1930, everyone is seeking the butler's advice--he is universally recognised as the man to get you out of a spot of bother. When he becomes attached to an unsuitable young woman, Bertie is asked--much to his indignation--You don't believe for a moment Jeeves will sanction the match? Even if Bertie refuses to acknowledge his butler's influence, it does not escape the attention of those around him.
As always, Wodehouse perfectly captures (and exposes to ridicule) the trivial concerns of the idle rich. Poor Bertie finds it impossible to refuse to help a friend-We Woosters have our code--and always finds that the solution to the muddle results in his own embarrassment, generally engineered by the discretely manipulative Jeeves. Read by Simon Callow, this audio abridgement offers a lively reading of the source material, which will both enchant Wodehouse's many fans, and convince newcomers to explore the rest of the author's extensive oeuvre. --John Oates

Penguin Audiobooks The Inimitable Jeeves
With a cast of characters that includes bearded revolutionaries, practical-joking twins, incognito authors, and a pair of confidence tricksters, The Inimitable Jeeves finds our upper-class hero Bertie Wooster in all kinds of hot water. Of particular concern in this collection of short stories--sensitively abridged by Penguin and read by Simon Callow--is Bertie's friend Bingo Little, who falls in love so often that it is impossible to keep track of his romantic entanglements, and who always falls for the most unsuitable women.
Unable to refuse to help a friend, Bertie is placed in one difficult situation after another, always under the watchful eye of his butler. Jeeves constantly works in the background, undermining Bertie's autonomy and moving the narrative in unexpected directions. He often fails to let his employer in on his plots, and a large proportion of his schemes turn out to expose Bertie to ridicule.
Yet Jeeves also ensures that Bertie's life runs smoothly, steering him through the pitfalls which face a rich young man with too much time on his hands. When in one story Bertie overhears Jeeves describing his employer as not intelligent, he sets out to disprove the butler's assessment. If it is predictable that things do not go according to plan, then it is Wodehouse's brilliant grasp of comedy which makes the manner in which things go wrong so constantly surprising. And, of course, by the end of the tale Jeeves has proved himself both inimitable and indispensable. --John Oates
