Jonathan Cape Porno
Porno is a sequel to Trainspotting</I&g t;, and builds on the success of that caustic and very funny novel by taking some of the characters through some radical new catastrophes. Sick Boy returns to Edinburgh with his ventures as a pimp and hustler in London having gone pear-shaped. Desperate for money, he comes up with a new idea, one that (he hopes) will really rake in the cash: the production of a low-rent porn film. Now Welsh introduces us to a new development: the novel's Sick Girl, Nicola Fuller-Smith, the object of Sick Boy's fevered lust, whom he also believes will be his passport to all kinds of substance-abusing happiness - needless to say, he's in for a rude awakening.
Other favourite characters from Trainspotting</I&g t; make a welcome reappearance: Renton, Begbie (even more psychotically dangerous than in the earlier book) and the unfortunate Spud, still unable to kick the drugs. Welsh fans need not hesitate: this is every bit as exuberant, hilarious, disgusting and irresistible as its predecessor.--Barry Forshaw

Vintage Filth
Irvine Welsh has produced more than his share of revolting characters in his short yet spectacular writing career, but in the creation of Detective Sergeant Bruce Robertson he has surpassed himself. The protagonist of Filth is, both personally and professionally, utterly corrupt; a thief, drug user, misogynist and racist, with standards of appearance and personal hygiene that are simply beyond belief. It goes without saying that his wife and children have left him but, oddly, he still has few drinking mates, and even some of the women he so hideously abuses are still prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. The undeniable sexuality which is part and parcel of the complete dominance over another human being, opines the viciously selfish Robertson, is just part of what makes, poliswork such a satisfying career. But, strangely, as we chart his inevitable decline...from what is admittedly a very low baseline--a solid, almost conventional, underlying morality begins to assert itself. Amid the degradation we come across a hint of reason as Welsh's stunningly direct dialogue and hideously imaginative plot combine in a thrilling, undeniably unsettling novel. --Nick Wroe

Orbit Dark Is the Moon (View from the Mirror S.)
In Dark is the Moon, the third volume of Ian Irvine's The View from the Mirror quartet, the web of intrigue and magical betrayal that passes for politics in the world of Santhenar has reached a point of complexity where even its master players are feeling the strain. One of the few constants in Irvine's imagined world--the passionate erotic love between scholar/chronicler Llian and woman warrior Karan--starts to become unravelled when they are trapped with the evil mage Rulke in his semi-material place of exile, the Nightland; his seduction of the obsessional Llian with eye-witness testimony of the past is painful to watch. Nor is Rulke the cliché dark lord of much fantasy writing, he is a man who thinks what he does is justified by greater good, and not so different from many of his officially virtuous enemies. Irvine's evocation of landscapes tortured into strangeness by aeons of magical intervention and cities wrecked by civil strife is crisply visualised; his set pieces of action--a fight with pirates, a trek through desert, a magical duel--are involving and viscerally exciting; his characters are complex individuals who grow and change--the semi-villainous Magraith has become almost a secondary heroine. --Roz Kaveney

Ebury Press Life in the Fast Lane: The Inside Story of the Ferrari Years

On occasions I felt some people were reluctant to contradict Michael as they seemed scared of upsetting him and of him leaving the team. I have to say that taking life by the balls is not a great strength of all Europeans. When balls where given out in Ireland and England, they seem to have run out further south in Europe.
International playboy, unreconstructed womaniser, a party animal prowling the champagne circuit of the Formula 1 year, Eddie Irvine has brought much-needed thunder and flash to a sport which has struggled under the yoke of dour, monochrome characters like Nigel Mansell and Michael Schumacher for so long.
>From obscurity to within a whisker of the Drivers Championship in four years at Ferrari, the world's most glamorous and enigmatic team, Irvine's rise to stardom has been meteoric, and when the Northern Irish maverick joins Jaguar on January 1, 2000, the Millennium will be ushering in the most exciting Grand Prix season in living memory.
In his own words, and in interviews with his friends, family and teammates, Irvine and writer Jane Nottage reveal the man behind the myth, treating us to the exclusive inside line on the 1999 season, Ferrari, Schumacher and the glitterdust that trails in the wake of one of the most glamorous sports in the world.
Always outspoken, often outrageous, Irvine is a cavalier in a sport where team politics and sponsor duties have made mumbling Roundheads of so many of his fellow drivers--this is seat of the pants ride through a life lived in the fast lane. --Alex Hankin

Pan The Ghosts of Everest: The Authorised Story of the Search for Mallory and Irvine
It is one of the most famous and powerful stories of humanity pitting itself tragically against the elements. In 1924, when Mallory and Irvine set out to make history by reaching of the summit of Everest and become the first men to stand on the world's tallest mountain, their place in the history books was already assured. But then Odell, also climbing with them, saw the two vanish within 800 feet of the summit--and they were never seen again. Ever since, many have wondered what really took place in the rarefied air at 28,000 feet. Did they in fact reach the summit and perish on the way down? Or were Hilary and Norgay the first men to reach the summit three decades later?
In April 1999, the Mallory and Irvine Research Expedition team set out to retrace the steps of the 1924 expedition. Their aim was to find out the truth behind the many theories about what happened on that fateful first climb. The Ghosts of Everest describes in carefully researched detail the two expeditions, weaving together both climbs with blow- by-blow accounts of the challenges and dangers encountered. Combining a lucid text with archive photographs of the original expedition and breathtaking colour shots of the new climb, this is a fascinating book of considerable power. --Barry Forshaw

Vintage Glue
With a title like Glue, it would seem reasonable to assume that Irvine Welsh's new novel is a profound reflection upon the pitfalls of solvent abuse. In fact, the glue of Welsh's book deals with the bonds that unite four boys growing up together in the scheme, the slum-clearance flats of Edinburgh, whose optimistic construction in the 1970s give way to the poverty, unemployment and crime of the 1980s and 1990s. It is this despair that defines the lives of Welsh's central protagonists: Terry Lawson, work-shy and sex-mad; Carl Ewart, budding DJ; Billy Birrell, boxer, and Andrew Galloway, a drug addict who tests HIV-positive.
Glue is a bildungsroman</I&g t; of growing up bad, recounted in Welsh's inimitable style. The novel follows the boys through their early forays into sex, drink, drugs and football violence, written in the author's trademark vernacular. Carl Ewart poses crucial questions such as: How dae ah chat up a bird? and Do I wear a rubber johnny? (If so, nae problem, I've started trying them on so ah ken how tae fir them). Welsh also attempts occasional political comment on the friends' difficulties: Billy Birrell reflects: Having money is the only way to get respect. Desperate, but that's the world we live in now. However, Welsh is better at grotesque moments of sex and violence and offhand one-liners, such as: Guilt and shaggin, they go the gither like fish 'n' chips. Fans of Trainspotting</I&g t; will love Glue, even down to the brief appearance of Begbie and Renton, but others may feel that the novel is just more of the same, and that this performance finds Welsh stuck in a rut. --Jerry Brotton

Orbit The Way Between the Worlds: v. 4 (View from the Mirror S.)
An extended fantasy sequence has always to deliver an impressive pay-off; The Way Between the Worlds is the fourth and final volume of Ian Irvine's The View From the Mirror and brings the quartet to a convolutedly triumphant finale. By now, Irvine has entirely involved our sympathies with the feckless, untrustworthy chronicler Llian and the heroic Karan, who loves him, and, to a lesser degree, to the profoundly morally ambiguous Magraith, whose loyalties have been so endlessly warped and abused by various key magical players in this struggle for the artefacts that will re-open the way through the dangers of the void to the home-worlds they lost. Much of the novel has always had to do with Llian's attempts to uncover precisely what occurred when the path between worlds was closed centuries earlier; Irvine plays fair, giving us some answers and making the sequence's resolution depend on those answers. For someone whose fiction plays so thoroughly with ethically grey areas, Irvine is also admirable in his preparedness to sort out endings that feel right; this is a book in which heroes and villains alike get a part of what they want, but a sort of justice as well. Irvine has brought both a lively intelligence and a keen moral sense to the heroics and spell-play of the modern fantasy novel. --Roz Kaveney

Vintage Marabou Stork Nightmares
Irvine Welsh delivers another grisly yet enthralling insight into the mindset of the Scottish underclass in Marabou Stork Nightmares. This bleak tale is told by Roy Strang, a jug-eared underachiever who happens to be in a coma. As he flits in and out of reality in his hospital bed, we learn about the dysfunctional Strang family--Vet, his well-intentioned dinner-lady mother, John, his violent security guard father, half-brothers Bernard and Tony, disabled brother Elgin and naive little sister Kim.
Growing up on a housing estate in Muirhouse, Edinburgh, Roy unavoidably gets into scrapes with other kids and, as his crimes eventually become more serious, the police. Welsh expertly interweaves into this base reality Roy's surreal hallucination of his time spent in South Africa with Sandy Jamieson--the fearless hunter (a figment of his troubled mind) with whom he goes in search of the vicious but elusive Marabou Stork, a beast that isn't what it seems to be. Roy trains his mind to shut out the present and finds comfort in his African escapism--anything to avoid dealing with the consequences of his actions in real life, and his mother's singing.
The Strangs move out to South Africa in the hope of making a better life for themselves and to raise their prospects, but they are disillusioned when, in a country where white skin is considered superior, they still fail to achieve their desires. Back in Muirhouse Roy works his way up to systems analyst from a trainee, but in his own time gets his kicks from football hooliganism; he gets involved with a bad crowd whom he finds himself joining in the docks before long.
The exercise and abuse of power is a consistent theme throughout the book: it's depicted between the hunters and animals, nurse Patricia Devine and Roy, Roy and the family dog, uncle Gordon and Roy, Lochart Dawson and the black South Africans, rapists and their female victim. Having been abused in his early years--physically, verbally and sexually--Roy, in a comatose state, is unable to fight anymore and is rendered a victim as well as a perpetrator in his state of limbo.
Using style nuances now familiar in his work, such as writing in dialect and eschewing quote marks, Welsh presents a modern-day Kafka-esque tale of exaggerated realism, told with dark humour and making sure to blunt any polished edges. --Angela Boodoo
